Dunaway & other thoughts

He might not have realized it, but Alex Dunaway of McGuffey saved the area wrestling reputation in the WPIAL Class AAA Championships. The junior from McGuffey qualified for the state tournament when he placed third at 103 pounds. He is the only wrestler from Trinity, McGuffey and Waynesburg to make it to Hershey this season. Had he not won in the consolation finals, Dunaway would have sealed the area's fate of not having at least one qualifier to the state tournament since they began having state tournaments.

Sam Brownlee's loss to Connellsville's Justin Haines in the heavyweight final might not be so surprising if the score was closer. The Canon-McMillan junior fell 9-1 and was dominated by Haines. Brownlee entered the tournament as the No. 1 wrestler in the state and those type of wrestlers usually don't get dominated.

The rumor mill is churning on a couple of issues:
1. The PIAA is said to be considering adding another qualifier from each district to its team tournament. Give the PIAA credit. If this tournament, which is a complete waste of time, can't draw enough people to the Giant Center in Hershey, then the PIAA will qualify enough teams to make sure it does. You can't manufacture interest but the PIAA is going to try.

2. One reason the Class AAA schedule was changed for the individual postseason was that there is talk of establishing a super regional tournament on the upcoming off week that would include Districts 7, 8 and 10. If this happens, the WPIAL would probably send more than three wrestlers into the region. That would be good. It's hard to think Districts 8 and 10 would be happy.

Because Class AA advances six wrestlers from each weight class to the regional, it was difficult to get excited about the matches until the finals. There was a lack of drama because anyone who made it to the quarterfinals had survived to wrestle another week. Qualifying half your weight class to the regional tournament is not a good way to spark interest.

One of the perks of covering wrestling for this newspaper is access to the hospitality rooms at these events. I always make sure that I purchase at least one treat at the event I'm at to support the host schools but the way to my heart is through my stomach. So kuddos to the Jones' family in Rogersville and the Wiltz family in Charleroi for the fine food they provided for the Section 1-AA and WPIAL Class AA Championship tournaments. Now that you've fed me well, you are not going to be able to get rid of me.

They are still young

Watching Brian Scritchfield throw away his first-round match against Jeannette's Ian Thom in the WPIAL Class AA Wrestling Championships was not only surprising but also a reminder that young people still do impetuous things.

Whatever it was that set off Scritchfield, a senior from Jefferson-Morgan,isn't really important. Scritchfield is more talented wrestler but the numerous penalty points and eventual disqualification showed that something else was at work here.

There are two tournaments left in the season in Class AA: the regional in Johnstown and the state event in Hershey. All of the work put into the season by a wrestler can be tossed away in a moment of frustration. Scritchfield didn't handle it well and there was not much head coach Scott Rhodes could do about it while the match was going on.

Tenn-age kids don't always do the right things and make the right decisions. That's what makes them teen-agers. At least, Scritchfield has a second chance in the wrestlebacks. Sometimes, that option isn't available with life mistakes.

Waynesburg's new coaches

I n a move that had to be a surprise to a lot of people, Ron Headlee and John Yates agreed to become the new coaches for Waynesburg University's wrestling program.

The link is here:

http://www.waynesburgsports.com/News/wrestling/2008/2/15/wr08coaches.asp?path=wrestling

This was a shock because the two recently resigned as coaches from Waynesburg High School's wrestling team. The Yellow Jackets have a rebuilding task ahead of them and the university should be commended in landing these two fine coaches.

You decide

Looking over the brackets for the local teams in this weekend's section tournament, I was struck by how difficult the 135-pound weight class was in the Section 1-AA tournament. Seven of the eight wrestlers have at least 15 wins and four have at least 20 victories. The top four advance to the WPIAL tournament so three pretty good wrestlers will be left behind.

Here is the link to the brackets

A tribute

(The following is a submitted tribute to the late Barry Gashel, a respected official and friend of wrestling)

With the regular season over, and postseason heating up, a reflection is made on someone missing from wrestling this year. Barry Gashel had served as a wrestling official for the past 35 yeas, more than 15 of those as Washington County Wrestling Official's Chapter Interpreter. There he served as mentor to experienced and less experienced officials by clarifying rules. Here was an individual who truly loved the sport. Barry had fought cancer for 2 1/2 years, with that final match coming on April 24, 2007. Respect has been paid to him at tournaments this year by moments of silence, the Most Valuable Wrestler Award being named in his honor, and wrist bands bearing his name were worn by officials. Here was a man who gained respect by his deeds. He was a family man who was also a coach, official, businessman, fireman, and friend.

Washington County Wrestling Official
Secretary/Treasurer,
Ken McWilliams

(I couldn't say it any better Ken)

You decide

Thursday night's Canon-McMillan-Connellsville match was one of the most unusual I have ever seen, mainly because of the rule change on disqualifications that allow a coach to forfeit the bout rather than take the six team points. What makes this so unusual is that the wrestler from C-M who was penalized did not intentionally try to hurt his opponent. At least, that's the way it apeared to me.

So read the story

and tell me whose side you are on.
