WPIAL prognostication

Remember the excitement and unexpected success of Canon-McMillan's wrestling team in last year's WPIAL Team Tournament?

The Big Macs won a thrilling match against Penn-Trafford, 28-27, in the semifinals when Zach Thomas got an unexpected pin. Then, a sudden snow storm forced the postponement of the finals into the following week, allowing Michael Hull to heal enough to wrestle. He won the final bout of the match against Kiski to sew up the title, 32-27. Had the match not been postponed, Hull would not have wrestled (shoulder) and the Big Macs probably lose in the finals.

This year is going to be different. No team is going to beat the Big Macs, if they are healthy, because there is too much talent and depth. Canon-McMillan should repeat as WPIAL champions and pose a major threat at the PIAA Team Tournament.

In Class AA, no team is going to stop Burrell. It's amazing how much talent that program has and most of it is home-grown from what I've been told. Chartiers-Houston is strong but not as strong as Burrell.

I know these are predictable picks, but these are the two best teams and both should win without much trouble.

One side note: The top three teams in Class AAA and top two in Class AA earn a spot in the PIAA tournament. The WPIAL has it wrong on its wrestling cover page.

Big Macs continue on roll

Canon-McMillan won its 32nd section team wrestling title and 10th in a row by routing Waynesburg, 54-18, in the finals of the Section 4 event at C-M's gym Thursday.
Canon-McMillan head coach Chris Mary missed the event because of a death in his family, but the Big Macs looked particularly sharp in beating Waynesburg and crushing Peters Township, 52-9.
The Big Macs streak is one of the more impressive in wrestling team competition.
C-M should be the No. 1 seed when the WPIAL releases its team tournament brackets for Class AAA and AA Friday.

Blake Balsama, bottom, of Chartiers-Houston works to get out from under Freedom's Lane Wood during their 135-pound match in the Section 1 Team Tournament Wednesday. Balsama won an 11-2 major decision.

Justin Martz of South Side Beaver has a cradle locked on Burgettstown's Matt Abott during their 171-pound bouts Wednesday. Martz pinned Abbott but Burgettstown won the match.

Bucs flex muscles

Chartiers-Houston did nothing to diminish its No. 2 ranking in Class AA, rolling to two easy victories and capturing the Section 1-AA Team Title Wednesday. The Bucs won 11 of 14 bouts in a 60-18 rout of Burgettstown in the finals. The Bucs were fortunate to get the doubleheader in. Four other sites, including Canon-McMillan and Bentworth, were forced to postpone until Thursday because of the snow storm.

The Bucs did have some bad news this week as three starters - Pete Provenzano at 112, Ryan Dodd at 119 and Tony Luciola at 171 - are injured and possibly out for the season. But they got good efforts from freshman Jake Jones at 112 and Jevone Harrison at 160 - each had a pin - to ease the sting of their losses.

CM, Bentworth wrestling ppd

The Section Wrestling Team Tournaments at Canon-McMillan and Bentworth were postponed until Thursday because of snow problems for some schools. The times for the matches are supposed to remain the same.

Picking the section winners

Granted, this tournament does not have the do-or-die feeling of the WPIAL Team Tournament because every team except the loser of the fifth-place match advances. Still, I'll make these predictions for each section.

In Class AAA, Kiski will beat Latrobe in the Section 1 finals, Hempfield will best Connellsville in Section 2 in a close match, North Allegheny will survive Butler in Section 3, and Canon-McMillan will get by Waynesburg in Section 4.

In Class AA, Chartiers-Houston wins a rematch with Burgettstown in the finals, Bentworth will be too much for Jeannette, and Burrell will crush Kittanning.

Understanding the section team tournament

If you are a little confused by the first part of wrestling's team postseason, don't be disappointed. I had to read the WPIAL rules again to make sure. Here's how it goes, I think:

The top five teams in each section advance to the WPIAL Team Tournament this year. There, that's the easy part.

As you know, each section was divided in half in Class AAA and AA, called subsections. That's why there is an 'A' and 'B' designation on the standings below. The top three teams in each of the subsections will compete Wednesday, Jan. 26, mostly for placement in the WPIAL Team Tournament.

Ah, but that makes six teams, right? Well, sort of.

The No. 1 teams in the subsections wrestle the No. 2 teams in the other subsection at one site. Last year, the matches were held at the top team in the B sections. This year, the top finisher in A gets to host the matches. The winners of these matches wrestle for the section title, the losers wrestle for third and fourth place.

The third-place finishers from each subsection will wrestle each other - not sure where yet - and the winner advances to the WPIAL Team Tournament, where it will probably be fed to the top seeds. The loser goes home.

That's how you get the five teams.

Any team that makes the finals of the WPIAL Team Tournament in either classification gets invited to the PIAA Team Tournament, which as you might know from my previous posts is one of my favorite tournaments, even if it's a shameless money-grab, waste-of-time event that simply makes the hotel rates go up in Hershey and costs thousands of dollars for the participating schools, and . . . well, OK, enough.

Hopefully, you have a better understanding of this event, now. Feel free to correct me or leave a question.

Megaludis beats Gulibon

In one of the most anticiapted bouts of the season, Franklin Regional's Nico Megaludis won a 4-3 decision over Derry's Jimmy Gulibon in the 125-pound finals of the Westmoreland County Coaches Tournament Saturday night.
The meeting of the two-time PIAA champions came about when Gulibon decided to move up a weight from 119 because he had trouble staying at 119. He plans to compete in the postseason at 119.
Each wrestler is ranked No. 1 in the country, state and WPIAL in their respective weight classes. Megaludis, a senior, is now 23-0 this season, 142-1 in his career and has won 108 bouts in a row. He also is one of just three wrestlers to win four Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournaments.
Gulibon, a junior, is now 13-1 this season, 88-3 in his career.
Following a scoreless first period, Megaludis chose down and escaped for the only point of the period. Gulbon reversed Megaludis early in the third for a 2-1 lead. But Megaludis escaped, then took Gulibon down as the more than 2,000 fans at Franklin Regional High School roared. Megaludis allowed Gulibon to escape in the final seconds to make it a one-point decision.

Notes

This weekend, the Westmoreland County Coaches Wrestling Tournament is the place to be if you want to see one of the best bouts of the season. The event, which will be held at Franklin Regional High School today and tomorrow, should have a showdown between two two-time PIAA champions - Nico Megaludis of Franklin Regional and Jimmy Gulibon of Derry - in the 125-pound finals.

The two wrestlers are expected to be weighed in at 125 and meet in the finals. The matchup was made possible because Gulibon, who has wrestled this season at 119, is having trouble holding his weight. So he's up to 125 for this tournament. He still plans to compete at 119 for the individual tournaments.

Each wrestler is ranked No. 1 in the country, state and WPIAL in their respective weight classes. Megaludis, a senior, is 22-0 this season, 141-1 in his career and has won 107 bouts in a row. He also is one of just three wrestlers to win four Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournaments.

Gulibon, a junior, is 13-0 this season, 88-2 in his career.

As an added way to rachet up anticipation, the bout was moved to the last final of the night.

Wiercioch-McKillop: Almost lost in the Powerade finals was the match between Charleroi's Cody Wiercioch and Burrell's Travis McKillop. These two banged head three times last year and will probably do it again this year. Their four-bout series is tied 2-2 and I imagine if they wrestled 50 times, it would be evenly split.

During the last match, it was Wierciochwho made the critical mistake, penalized a point for fleeing the mat. McKillop won a one-point victory. The loss will serve as motivation for Wiercioch.

Trinity update: Trinity postponed its dual meet against Mt. Lebanon Wednesday as its wrestlers recover from a skin problem that forced the Hillers out of the Powerade tournament. Trinity expects to be back in action this weekend, when the Hillers are scheduled to compete in the Kittanning Duals.

The match against Mt. Lebanon was moved to Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Tri-County Tournament: The Tri-County Athletic Directors Association Wrestling Tournament will take place next weekend at Charleroi High School. Teams from the three-county area will participate.

Make sure you know of one change. The finals were switched to 1:30 p.m. Saturday because of the Steelers game.
