WPIAL Team Tournament picks

In Class AAA, it isn’t hard to pick the Big Macs to win it all, so let’s make it a bit more difficult. The following are my predictions from the quarterfinals in.
Quarterfinals: Canon-McMillan over Hempfield, Greensburg Salem over Hampton, Connellsville over Butler and Kiski over North Allegheny.
Semifinals: Canon-McMillan over Greensburg Salem and Kiski over Connellsville.
Finals: Canon-McMillan over Kiski in a rematch from the finals of 2010.
In Class AA, Jefferson-Morgan has been the top-ranked team by the Observer-Reporter all season. No reason to change now.
Quarterfinals: Jefferson-Morgan over South Side Beaver, Bentworth over Yough, Burrell over Freedom, and Chartiers-Houston over South Fayette.
Semifinals: Jefferson-Morgan over Bentworth, and Chartiers-Houston over Burrell in a close match.
Finals: Jefferson-Morgan over Chartiers-Houston.

WPIAL Team Tournament seeds

Caon-McMillan is the No. 1 seed in Class AAA and Jefferson-Morgan is No. 1 in Class AA in the WPIAL Team Tournament pairings released today.

Kiski, Connellsville and Hampton are seeds 2-4 in Class AAA and Chartiers-Houston, Burrell and Bentworth are seeds 2-4 in Class AA.

Waynesburg, Peters Township and Ringgold wrestle in Monday's pigtail matches at Chartiers Valley.

Canon-McMillan hosts Latrobe, Hempfield and a pigtail winner in Wednesday's first round. Hampton, Connellsville and Kiski are the other host sites.

Jefferson-Morgan gets a first-round bye and hosts SS Beaver and Keystone Oaks for Wednesday's first round. Chartiers-Houston and Bentworth also has home sites for the first round.

Semifinals are Friday at a site not yet determined and finals are at Chartiers Valley Saturday, Class AA at 4 p.m. and Class AAA at 6:30.

Section Tournament thoughts

I am always amazed that people urge me to publish my pre-tournament selections when I stink at it. I only got two on the nose: Section 2 in Class AAA and Section 3 in Class AA. Greensburg Salem beating Central Catholic on criteria was a shocker but that team must be underrated to beat PCC. Hampton knocking off North Allegheny was unexpected and I took a shot with South Fayette and lost.

Canon-McMillan getting Connor Schram back in the lineup was key if the Big Macs want to sweep the team tournament titles this season. If the rankings hold, then Canon-McMillan and Central Dauphin will be the two best teams in the state team tournament that begins in a couple weeks. Of course, the PIAA in all its idiocy has the bracket set so the teams meet in the semifinals. Geniuses.

Despite having two dozen wrestlers on the sideline, Yough forfeited four bouts to Jefferson-Morgan in the first round of Section 2-AA. Not sure what Yough coach Jeremy Zufall was thinking - we'll save everyone for the third-place match? - but I can't imagine parents of those wrestlers who sat were pleased.

The strongest section in wrestling is 1-AAA, where Kiski, Latrobe, Greensburg Salem, Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Franklin Regional and Penn Trafford reside. Would have loved to see those matches Wednesday night.

Chartiers-Houston's 63-10 win over Freedom might have been a rouit but the 145-pound bout where Tanner Sutton decisioned Boe Bonzo, 5-3, would have been worth watching the other 13 to get to it.

Picking the winners

For those of you who have read this blog for a while, you know that we are heading into my two least favorite parts of the season. The first is the Section Team Tournament, which plays out Wednesday and the second is the PIAA Team Tournament, which begins a couple weeks from now.

The Section Team Tournament is nothing but a seeding process with only one of the six teams failing to advance. I would be willing to totally do without this event if it it did not allow for two very positive things in the sport.

First, it cuts the dual meet season down because there are fewer teams in the subsections. That allows teams to use more scheduling points to compete in more regular season duals and tournaments and I think that's a good thing. I don't want to go back to the 8-team sections because the competition level was awful for most of those matches.

Second, it does determine a section champion, and that is a good accomplishment.

That being said: Here are my picks:

Maybe we can all take a break from the Canon-McMillan debates to recognize there are other great teams out there. This is from Rodfrisco.com:

Central Dauphin established a Pennsylvania record for consecutive wrestling dual meet victories with a 70-3 triumph over Central Bucks East in the opening round of the Central Dauphin Duals. With four more victories in the event, CD (9-0) will take an 82-match streak into Wednesday’s match with once-beaten Big Spring (10-1).

The opening-round victory was CD’s 78th straight and broke the previous mark of 77 set by Dallastown from the 1983-84 season through the 1988-89 season. The Dallastown streak was stopped by South Western, 31-15, on Jan. 11, 1989.
CD’s winning streak began on Jan. 12, 2008, following a 34-31 loss to Cumberland Valley in the third round of the five-round Cumberland Valley Winter Duals. The Rams defeated Council Rock South in the fourth round, 38-17, to start its current streak which has spanned four years and two days.
In the process, Central Dauphin became the first District 3 team to win four consecutive District 3-AAA team championships (Hanover has the District 3 record with seven straight titles, all in Class AA) and four straight PIAA Class AAA Team Championship titles.
The Rams defeated Mifflin County 53-10 for their 79th straight victory and Middletown 55-8 for their 80th straight victory. CD crushed Abington Heights 71-3 in the fourth round for its 81st straight victory and beat St. Anthony’s from Melville, NY (Long Island) 52-12 to close out the Duals at 82 straight.

West Greene to honor Fletcher

Rosemary Fletcher will be inducted (posthumously) into the West Greene athletic Hall of Fame, as a contributor, prior to the varsity wrestling match against. Jefferson-Morgan Wednesday. Match time is scheduled for 7:00, and ceremonies for this, little league recognition and senior night will take place in between completion of Jr. High match and start of varsity contest.
Rosemary Bissett Fletcher passed on Nov. 10, 2011. She was a life-long supporter of athletics in the district, and bore the nickname "Mrs. West Greene."

She graduated from the former Richhill High School in Wind Ridge in 1949. Rosemary married Robert Loar Fletcher on January 2, 1950 and was a resident of Graysville most of her life.

Rosemary was extremely active in the school district. She was employed as a bus driver for 37 years, retiring in January, 2011. She drove regular routes with our students, as well as hauling the bulk of West Greene's extra-curricular runs most of her career. She also served on the Board of Education 17 years, holding the position of Board Secretary, and being on the Transportation and Athletic Committees.

Rosemary, and family, were very supportive of our wrestling teams over the years. The Fletcher-Bissett Memorial Award has been given annually to the most outstanding varsity wrestler. Rosemary had served as presenter of this award for more than 30 years.

Rosemary was a true philanthropist when it came to "her kids." No team, or athlete ever went without a meal or drink while she drove. Supporting West Greene student-athletes was a lifetime commitment for her.

Final county thoughts

Connellsville won the team title with only three wrestlers in the finals. The Falcons did have 10 total medalists. Consider this: In their last dual meet, the Falcons started eight freshman and head coach Tom Dolde told me there were four or five eight-graders who could come and start next season.

One of the traits of a possible state medalist is a mean streak. Tanner Wiltrout of Connellsville has one and that made his bout against Tanner Sutton of Chartiers-Houston so much fun to watch.

Luke Palamides was not happy about his 1-0 loss to Charleroi's Aaron Toth. Following the match, the 126-pounder from Peters Township headed to the hallway, where he let off some of that frustration. A good sign when a wrestler is pissed about losing a Tri-County Tournament final.

Toth and Josh Kwasny will be competing in a numbers’ game the rest of this season. The Charleroi seniors are approaching the school victory record of 110 held by Dave Grillo.
Toth, a 126-pounder, and Kwasny, a 132-pounder, should each pass that number if they remain healthy.
But who will finish with more wins?
Toth is 16-0 this season and has a 103-29 career record. Kwasny is 17-2 and 101-28.

Corey Garry was not feeling well before the first round of the tournament began Friday. He knew who to blame. The Fort Cherry senior indulged in not one, not two, but three of his mother’s specialty hamburgers, and his stomach did not react well.
“I have an inability to stop eating her food,” he said with a smile.

Autin McDermitt of Burgettstown is one of those rare freshmen whose preseason reputation matches his in season success.

The biggest upset of the night belonged to Peters Township's Phil Mary, who knocked off top-seeded Jake Rothka of Bentworth, 7-6, in the quarterfinals at 106 pounds. Mary gets Brendan Howard of Jefferson-Morgan in the semifinals.

Ringgold heavyweight Dean Lusk, rated third in the Observer-Reporter Wrestling Rankings, was scratched from the tournament with an upper arm injury. Lusk, who has a 15-2 record, hurt the arm in a 10-5 decision over West Mifflin’s Nick Dzuka Thursday night.

West Greene's Cody Jacobs had to be helped off the mat with what appeared to be a right knee injury following his loss to Fort Cherry's Tanner Garry at 195 pounds.

Connellsville leads the team race after the first day, accumulating 83.5 points. Peters Township is second at 74, followed by Chartiers-Houston (71) and Jefferson-Morgan (64).

Gulibon out 2 weeks

Jimmy Gulibon, the three-time PIAA champion from Derry and a four-time winner at Powerade, will miss the next two weeks of the season with a tear of his meniscus. Gulibon injured the left knee during the 126-pound finals against Mawell Hvolbek of Blair Academy. The tear of the meniscus is considered the easiest of the other possible knee injuries to rehab from.

Final Powerade thoughts

The aura of Powerade was enhanced when Blair Academy accepted an invite to participate. The Buccaneers' program, ranked No. 1 in the country by most publications, didn't disappoint. The Bucs sent seven wrestlers to the finals. What was impressive was not that they won the team title - who would bet against that? - but that they didn't roll over the competition in the finals. Blair went 4-3 and staying above .500 in that round wasn't assured until a one-point win at heavyweight.

Watching Jimmy Gulibon limp off the mat at the end of his finals match quieted the large crowd in Canon-McMillan's gymnasium. Gulibon, a three-time state champion from Derry, hopped off the mat after winning a fourth Powerade title and later had to be lifted onto the awards stand. An MRI is planned today.

As for a coming-out party, Central Catholic's Vincenzo Joseph established himself as a force at 106 in the state by beating another super freshman, Ricky Cavallo, of Hempfield. Expect to see them both on the medal stand in Hershey.

Another freshman, Michael Kemerer of Franklin Regional, also had an impressive tournament. He handled Canon-McMillan's Dalton Macri in the finals, 11-5, and appears to have the talents to medal at states.

Godwin Nyama's accomplishments in wrestling are even more impressive when you consider his wrestling background. Nyama, a senior at Brashear High School, became the first City League wrestler to place at states last year and became the first to win a medal at Powerade Friday night, first. Nyama has been wrestling for just four years.

Chance Marsteller is bigger and stronger and still reminds a lot of people of Cary Kolat in the way he carries himself and through some of his moves on the mat. The sophomore form Kennard-
Dale is 62-0 in his scholastic career and looks like a lock to become a four-time state champion in Hershey.

Headlee of Waynesburg was upset in the second round at 106, getting pinned in overtime by Ryan Friedman of St, Pauls. ... Blair Academy had a 16-point lead in the team standings heading into the evening round at Canon-McMillan's gym. ... Canon-McMillan has eight wrestlers in the winners' bracket. ... Powerade picks

When Blair Academy accepted Frank Vulcano's invitation to participate in the Powerade Christmas Tournament, it immediately became the favorite to win the event. Heck, Blair's reserves won a tournament in Bethlehem last week, so how good could their regulars be? The only team that had a chance to beat Blair was Canon-McMillan, but those chances fell away when Connor Schram's minor back injury forced him out of the tournament.

So here are my picks for the team race.

I am picking one freshman - Vincenzo Joseph of Central Catholic - to win a weight class, 106. Jimmy Gulibon of Derry will beat Colt Shorts of Canon-McMillan in the 126-pound finals for his fourth title; Cody Wiercioch (170) and Cody Klempay (Hvy) will win titles for Canon-McMillan; and Tyson Dippery of Central Dauphin will beat Mark Grey of Blair Academy in the 132-pound final.

And the biggest upset in the tournament will come at 160, where Chance Marsteller of Kennard Dale . . . . won't pin his way to a title. He'll win at one by decision. Hey. I'm not crazy.

As I've done over the past 30 seasons, I will release my individual rankings the first week of January and have them updated on a weekly basis. I normally wait until that time because there has been enough wrestling to get an idea of who should be in and who should not be. Picking the top two or so individuals in each weight class is pretty easy. It's the remaining spots that take the most time.

Powerade, West Mifflin and Southmoreland will hold tournaments this week and that is a major help.

My first regular season team rankings will be posted Wednesday morning - sooner if things break right - along with my picks for Powerade.

Schram out of Powerade

Connor Schram, who won a state title and silver medal in the past two PIAA individual wrestling tournaments, will not wrestle in the Powerade Christams Tournament because of a minor back problem. Schram was one of three wrestlers from Canon-McMillan who won individual titles at last year's tournament.

Head coach Chris Mary said Schram injured the back in late summer of early fall and they want to be careful not to reaggravate it. Schram wrestled in the season-opening Greenville Duals but sat out Friday's dual meet against North Allegheny.

Schram is expected back in early January.

Powerade on television list

The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) has released this season’s wrestling “Match of the Week” schedule, featuring schools from across the state participating in select matches as well as tournament and sectional finals.
The “Match of the Week” season begins Friday, Jan. 6, with taped coverage of the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.
Wrestling fans will be able to catch the action on Saturday nights beginning Jan.14 and continuing to the state championships in early March.

Canon-McMillan will honor its 1992 wrestling team that won the Class AAA state team title. Ceremonies will take place Friday night, when the Big Macs take on North Allegheny in a non-section home match. The 92 team was coached by Jim Neuman and had five state medalists: Mark Angle (4th at 103), Bobby Owens (5th at 119), Tim Rohaley (4th at 130), Keilann O'Daniel (2nd at 145) and Bryan Matusic (2nd at 160).

Retherford ineligible for season

Zain Retherford, a junior at Benton High School in Columbia County,has been ruled ineligible in the sport of wrestling for the 2011-2012season by a PIAA Board of Appeal.
The Board voted 8-1 in favor of upholding a District 4 ruling onNov. 30 that ruled against Retherford, who had transferred from LineMountain, where he was a PIAA Class AA champion at 103 pounds as afreshman, to Benton. Both schools are perennially among the top ClassAA programs in District 4.
In November, District 4 held that Retherford’s transfer was“materially motivated” by Retherford’s desire to wrestle for BentonHigh School. That hearing, the second held by District 4 on the matterafter the PIAA claimed a flaw in the district’s original Augusthearing, was closed to the public and the transcript of the hearing hasnot been released. As a result, District 4′s reasons for reaching itsdecision have not been disclosed.
The PIAA hearing was open, however, and it appeared Line Mountain’scase for challenging the transfer boiled down to Retherford’srelationship with Benton head coach Russ Hughes. Hughes, a two-timePIAA champion at Benton, is the head technician for the Benton TigersWrestling Club; Retherford had participated in the Benton Club in theoffseason.
There has been no suggestions or allegations that Hughes played any active role in Retherford’s decision to transfer.

City League courts WPIAL

The Pittsburgh City League high schools are applying for inclusion into the WPIAL for certain sports but not wrestling.
That's not good news for the Class AAA teams in District 7 (WPIAL), who were hoping that the City League would switch from the District 10 qualifier to the WPIAL. That would give the district a good chance of regaining the fourth qualifier to the state tournament that it lost when the City League left the WPIAL and competed in the Northwest (D-10) qualifier.

Luster out for season

Jason Luster, a 160-pound standout for Pittsburgh Central Catholic, is reportedly out for the season with an upper body injury. Luster entered this season as a favorite to win a WPIAL Class AAA title.

Retherford gets new hearing

The waiting game continues for standout high school wrestler Zain Retherford.

During the off-season, Retherford transferred from Line Mountain to Benton High School, citing family reasons and bullying for the move. District 4 unanimously voted to declare Retherford ineligible for the upcoming season, stating it was a transfer for the benefit of athletics.

In Thursday’s appeal to the PIAA, the board of appeals was forced to remand the case back to District 4 after district officials failed to adhere to policies concerning sequestering parties during testimony.

“There was a fundamental process flaw, and this is not an issue we want submitted to an appeal court,” PIAA Director of Legal Affairs Michael Solomon, Esquire, said. “Our goal is to get it right the first time.

“There was a hiccup in the process, and it was strong enough that it has to be reheard at the district level. This gives both parties a chance to restate their case.”

The old transcript will be thrown out and Retherford, his parents, Benton and Line Mountain officials will argue their cases from scratch and go through the process a second time.

Wiercioch ruled eligible to wrestle

By a unanimous 7-0 vote, the PIAA Board of Control upheld the transfer of Cody Wiercioch from Charleroi to Canon-McMillan High School and made him eligible to compete this season.

Wiercioch won gold and silver medals in the state tournament while at Charleroi and enrolled in Canon-McMillan for this, his junior year, after his parents purchased a house in Cecil Township.

Wiercioch had a hearing with the WPIAL Board of Control Oct. 17 and his eligibility was denied by an 8-6 vote.

The hearing in front of the WPIAL board was needed after Charleroi contested Wiercioch’s tranfer. The family moved from its home in Charleroi to Cecil Township and Cody and his sisters enrolled in Canon-McMillan.
The Wiercioch family had looked at purchasing a home in the Chartiers-Houston School District.

Charleroi and Canon-McMillan agreed that Wiercioch was not recruited to wrestle for Canon-McMillan.

Klempay, Shorts pick colleges

Two Canon-McMillan wrestlers - heavyweight Cody Klempay and middleweight Colton Shorts - have accepted scholarship offers from Division I programs.

Klempay received a scholarship from the University of North Carolina and Shorts from Cal Poly.

Klempay was a third-place finisher in the PIAA Championships last season, posting a 47-1 record. His only loss came in the heavyweight semifinals of the state tournament.

North Carolina is coached by former Council Rock state champion C.D. Mock, and Cary Kolat and former Waynesburg and Pitt wrestler Drew Headlee are assistant coaches.

Klempay chose UNC over Pitt, Penn State and Clarion.

Shorts became the first wrestler in Canon-McMillan history to win 50 matches in a season, going 50-2. He placed third in the PIAA Championships at 103, losing in the semifinals to eventual state champion Billy Rappo of Council Rock South.

I was surprised how much of a reaction that the Beth-Center School Board made when it hired a new wrestling coach. It's obvious there are people in the district passionate about the sport and concerned about how it's being run.
My opinion about the hire is this: I am glad the board picked a new coach rather than shut down the program. There is a great deal of tradition in B-C wrestling and I hope it lasts. How would you feel if the program no longer existed? No true fan should want that.
I am not going to ask everyone to hold hands in a circle and sing kumbaya, because that isn't going to change people's opinion.
The wonderful part about wrestling is that it is an INDIVIDUAL sport. There are 14 weight classes and none of them is dependent on the other. Points don't carry over into the next bout and each new 6 minutes of wrestling has a new face and a new opponent.
So chose the part, and the people, in the wrestling program you believe is worthy of your support and move on.

The season is fast approaching.

Swarrow hired at B-C

Bill Swarrow was hired as varsity wrestling coach at Monday night's Beth-Center School Board meeting. Swarrow replaces Dave Nelson, who was hired for the same job at Charleroi High School.
The school board, as this hires shows, is not considering disbanding the program or creating a co-op with another school district.
Beth-Center will return seven wrestlers from last year's team that went 3-8, including 2-3 in Section 2-A.

It would be easy to say that the WPIAL struck a blow against transferring because of athletic intent when it denied the eligibility of former state wrestling champion Cody Wiercioch, who was attempting to transfer to Canon-McMillan from Charleroi.
Unfortunately, we don't know that is true, and it's not because the meeting was held in private and no one commented on the reasons why because of legal issues.
For the past, oh, decade or so, the WPIAL and PIAA have been in a spitting contest over the transfer issue. The WPIAL is not happy with the PIAA because of that organization's tendency to overrule the WPIAL's action. The PIAA apparently has a more sympathetic ear.
From what we know, Wiercioch's transfer seemed to cause at least some debate at the WPIAL Board of Control. The 8-6 vote indicates that.
It's also hard to understand how a transfer can be considered for athletic intent when the family reportedly purchases a house in another district.
Wiercioch's move arguably makes it harder for him to repeat his state title run of his freshman year because of the talent in Class AAA. Remember, the weights have changed and there could be a number of hurdles for Wiercioch to clear to repeat winning a gold, or even a silver medal such as the one he captured last year.
I'm not a fan of transferring because I think it tends to disrupt a child's school life. But this doesn't seem like the right case for the WPIAL to try and make a point. Wiercioch will no doubt receive a scholarship offer no matter where he wrestles because of his past accomplishments. If the family is settled into a new home, and they made the financial commitment, then it's hard to see what the eight WPIAL board members saw in voting against this move.
They're not talking so we don't know if it was to take a stand or stick their collective tongues out at the PIAA.
Let's hope it's the former.

With an 8-6 vote, the WPIAL Board of Control denied the transfer of former state wrestling champion Cody Wiercioch from Charleroi to Canon-McMillan. Board members are not permitted to comment on personnel matters.
Wiercioch is expected to appeal to the PIAA Board of Control, which would require the family and school administration to attend a meeting in Harrisburg.
The Wiercioch family declined to comment.
Wiercioch captured a Class AA state title as a freshman and was runnerup as a sophomore.

Dave Nelson, who has been a wrestling coach at Beth-Center for the last 13 years, has taken the head varsity wrestling job at Charleroi High School. Nelson, a Beth-Center graduate, coached the Bulldogs for nine seasons, recently alternating seasons with Chuck Colborn.
Nelson replaced Greg Doerfler, who resigned at the end of last season. The Cougars lost former state champion Cody Wiercioch, who transferred to Canon-McMillan before the start of the school year. But three talented wrestlers return in Nick Gavazzi, Aaron Toth and Josh Kwasny.
Beth-Center has not filled the opening left by Nelson's departure yet.

The WPIAL will hold a hearing during its October board meeting on the transfer of Cody Wiercioch from Charleroi High School to Canon-McMillan. Charleroi did not sign off on Wiercioch's transfer and the WPIAL determined that a meeting was needed for the school to present its argument.
The hearing is scheduled for Oct. 17.
Wiercioch, a junior, won a state wrestling title for the Cougars as a freshman and finished second last season. He and his family moved into a house in the Canon-McMillan School District this summer.
Canon-McMillan won the PIAA Class AAA team title at last year's individual championships in Hershey and has captured the past two WPIAL team championships.

Fort Cherry hires Yanek

When it comes to the transfer issue in high school, I am old fashioned. I always believed that under ideal circumstances, a student begins and ends his school days with the people who lives on the same street, and in the same neighborhood and district. That's how I did it and how many other people go through it.
I am not naive enough to believe that is the way it happens all the time and I know that things have drastically changed since I walked five miles to school both ways, uphill, and used ink wells so I could write on parchment.
You can speculate, but I don't think anyone can know the reasons why someone transfers unless you can look inside their heart and mind. Good luck with that one.
A part of me understands wanting what's best for a child. I am a father and I want my daughter to have the best opportunities available. I weigh that against the type of disruption it would have to her life if I made drastic changes.
Cody Wiercioch's situation at Charleroi was not a good one as per the wrestling program. The school is struggling to field a team, a new coach still hasn't been hired, and the program is teetering again. This is not the first time it's struggled with numbers or the first time it's been suggested that the program be ended. But his goal to another state title would be more attainable in Class AA.
Wiercioch's success on the mat did not spark renewed interest at Charleroi. But leaving draws criticism to him for not being loyal.
Is he a traitor or simply chasing a better way? Remember when Cary Kolat skipped the final two Californa Christmas Tournaments to compete in the Midlands? Great athletes crave competition and I imagine Wiercioch is no different.
I've been told Canon-McMillan was actually the second choice on the list, that the family bid on a house in the Chartiers-Houston district but did not get it.
Canon-McMillan seemed the most logical choice because Wiercioch worked out at Quest and has ties to that area. That the wrestling program is successful certainly helps.
Wiercioch doesn't need exposure to earn a college scholarship. He's a known and wanted athlete. There are schools right now - Penn State among them - that has great interest in his talents. Winning a state title as a freshman and a silver medal last season gets him into just about any school in the country if his grades are good.
If Wiercioch went to Canon-McMillan for personal glory, then I'm not sure it's such a great place. If he wants to part of a winner and contribute to a team effort, it's perfect.
Wrestling in a talent-laden lineup at Canon-McMillan assures the spotlight won't constantly be on him. Wiercioch now blends in with Connor Schram, Solomon Chishko, Cody Klempay, et al., rather than stands out in the Charleroi program as the great shining star.
I would also suggest that Wiercioch's chances of winning a state title this year will be lower in Class AAA simply because he could be in the same weight class of Kennard-Dale's Chance Marsteller, a Kolat protege who won the 152-pound title last season as a freshman. The undefeated Marsteller, who was at last year's Powerade, could be at 160 this year, the same weight most expect Wiercioch to wrestle.
In this area, we like to believe that we have a massive transfer problem. That just isn't true. The Eastern and Central part of the state has dibs on that. But it does happen here and a high-profile athlete such as Wiercioch is sure to draw a response. His transfer is rare because it happened during his high school days. Most occur before that.
Canon-McMillan wrestling is gaining a reputation as school that seeks out transfers. I'm not sure that is a valid criticism. If Wiercioch had gone to Chartiers-Houston, would that change that program's reputation? If Wiercioch had chosen any other school in this area, do you believe the administration would have tried to dissuade him because they didn't want the criticism? Or would the fans would be super critical of getting a talented athlete? I doubt it.
Does Wiercioch make Canon-McMillan a stronger team? Absolutely, probably the best in the state.
Does it give Wiercioch a better chance at individual success? That's debatable, and it's what will make this season interesting to watch.

Penn State University-Fayette has added men's wrestling to its athletic programs. The program will begin this fall. The school had been studying the feasibility of starting a wrestling program for the past year.
The school's first dual meet will be Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Roaring Lions host Penn State-New Kensington at 7 p.m.
Former Uniontown High School head wrestling coach Jerry Simon will lead the fledgling program at Penn State Fayette. Simon graduated from California University in 1967 with a teaching degree. He was a three-year member of that school's wrestling team, serving as captain in his senior season. At Uniontown, Simon spent 25 years as the head wrestling coach, where he also taught French and Spanish for 38 years. He retired from both positions in 2005.
Simon also noted that it is not too late for high school graduates to enroll at Penn State Fayette and participate in the wrestling program this fall.
The addition of wrestling brings the total number of intercollegiate varsity sports offered at the Fayette campus to nine.

Macri fourth in Greco-Roman

Dalton Macri of Canon-McMillan finished fourth in the 105-pound weight class in the Cadet Greco-Roman national championships in Fargo, N.D.
Macri fell to Zac Hall of Michigan, 6-1, 1-0 in the third-place battle. Darian Cruz of Bethlehem Catholic won the weight class with a 4-0, 7-0 victory over Michael Cook of Idaho.

Rich Froats dies

Richard Lee “Richie” Froats Jr., 24, of Burgettstown, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 19, 2011, in his home.
He was born August 1, 1986, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon, a son of Richard Lee Froats Sr. and Bernadette Fuller Froats of Burgettstown.
A 2005 graduate of Burgettstown High School, he was a four-year member and letter winner of the wrestling team. He competed in the WPIAL championships his junior year and won the championship his senior year, won the Southwest Regional championships his senior year, and finished sixth as a junior and fourth as a senior in the PIAA state championships. He also holds the record for all-time career wins for the Burgettstown High School wrestling program.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in Lee & Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, in Burgettstown Community Presbyterian Church, 1325 Main Street, Burgettstown, with the Rev. Dan Ekas, pastor, officiating. Everyone is kindly asked to meet at the church. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Florence.

Chaussard to South Fayette

Rick Chaussard, who has been in the Fort Cherry wrestling program for 16 years, has taken over as head wrestling coach at South Fayette. Chaussard coached South Fayette two decades ago and moved to Fort Cherry after the SF program was discontinued.

Chaussard replaced Mike Ladick, who had his position opened in May. Ladick was in the corner when Nick Carr became South Fayette's first individual state champion. He won the 145-pound title in Class AA.

One reason for Chaussard's return to South Fayette was to coach his son, Kevin, who is a sophomore with the Lions.

First PIAA champion dies

Sam Harry, 89, passed away on Saturday, June 4, at his home in Harrisburg. He led a full and productive life, but he will always be known for his semi-accidental fame: He was the first of 1,382 PIAA wrestling champions.

In 1938, PIAA decided to conduct its first formal statewide wrestling championship. The WPIAL, District 1 and District 3 had begun championships a few years earlier and other PIAA districts had added enough schools with wrestling to make a state tournament feasible.

As it happened, Harry was a sophomore at Clearfield in 1938, just four years after the late Arthur J. Weiss Sr., who passed away less than a month ago at the age of 102, had established a wrestling program at Clearfield. Harry also happened to be at the lightest weight, 85 pounds.

Harry was one of 78 wrestlers representing 27 schools at the first state tournament, according to “The History of the PIAA Wrestling Championships,” co-authored by Norm Palovcsik of Lock Haven and Mike Smith of Newport.

Harry pinned his first two opponents. His opponent in the finals, Jerry Spence of Grove City, did not wrestle a match in order to reach the finals; Spence receive a first-round bye, then won by forfeit in the semifinals. Despite that, Harry won the seven-minute match with Spence, matches that, if not decided by a pin, were decided solely on riding time; there was no uniform point-scoring system in place until 1941.

Bucky Maughan retires

Arthur "Bucky" Maughan, a PIAA champion at Canonsburg High School, has retired following an illustrious coaching career at North Dakota State University.
The 70-year-old Maughan is the winningest coach in North Dakota State history. He finished his career with a 467-157-13 record and led the Bison to three undefeated seasons:1984-85, 1991-92 and 2003-04.
Maughan led the Bison to four NCAA Division II national championships (1988, 1998, 2000, 2001) and six national runner-up finishes.
Maughan was one of the youngest head coaches in the country when he took over the North Dakota State program after graduating from Moorhead State, where he won NAIA titles in 1962 and 1963 and an NCAA title in 1963.
Maughan won his state title in 1959 at 112 pounds and was a three-time WPIAL champion (1957-59).

Tribute to Art Weiss

The great man of PIAA wrestling, former Clearfield wrestling coach Art Weiss, has died at the age 102 in Clearfield.

Emphasis on great man.

Most Pennsylvania wrestling fans, even those new to the sport, have heard of Weiss, and for good reason: Weiss coached a PIAA record 31 state champions and made Clearfield one of the prominent names in state wrestling.

But his state champions, spread among 24 individuals, are just his most visible public legacy. Art Weiss was first and foremost a gentleman who took a sport in which he never participated and molded it into one of the great athletic endeavors and sporting events in Pennsylvania.

We are all proud of Pennsylvania’s wrestling history and heritage. And much of that heritage stems directly from Weiss’ effort as a coach, official and contributor.

Weiss graduated in 1927 from Nazareth High School where he captained the football, basketball and baseball teams; Nazareth had no wrestling at the time. His first exposure to wrestling came at Perkiomen Prep, which he attended before matriculating to Albright College. Wrestling caught his eye, but he did not participate in the sport. (Some bios about Coach Weiss, who is a member of the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, are here and here. God bless the Internet.)

So Weiss, the man whose name is synonymous with high school wrestling in Pennsylvania, never wrestled a minute in his life. In fact, Weiss came to Clearfield after graduation from Albright as a basketball coach. Clearfield had decided to start an intramural wrestling program in the mid-1930s and Weiss agreed to develop the program. Little did anyone know the history that would spring from that decision.

Weiss was just an extraordinary man who had an incredible ability to remember details. My first year at Clearfield Area High School was Weiss’ last as a math teacher (I was not in his class, darn it) and my wrestling career was a bit stunted (0-0 at the varsity level; I love to tell people I never lost a varsity match at Clearfield). So I was a very minor figure in the Clearfield wrestling hierachy.

But I did write for The Progress, my hometown paper, and Weiss took note, one time calling me at the paper to tell me how much he enjoyed my articles. Folks, it was like getting a call from God Himself. I’m not alone when I tell you I had that much respect for the man.

And, of course, I always called him Coach Weiss, even though Ron Park and Neil Turner (Coach Park and Coach Turner, to this day) were my high school coaches. (Coach Park once introduced to me to a friend as “the toughest JV wrestler he ever had at Clearfield.” I still haven’t quite determined whether that was a compliment or an insult, aside from the fact that, um, I wasn’t very tough.)

Weiss lived a simple, but plentiful and important life: He positively affected hundreds of young men directly, thousands more indirectly. And although his health slowly deteriorated in the last few years of his life, he remained bright and alert right up to the last days.

Art Weiss was a wonderful and remarkable man. I have always been grateful that he remained in Clearfield and gave my hometown a deep sense of pride and honor.

Tarley to WVU

West Virginia University wrestling coach Craig Turnbull has announced the recruiting class for the 2011-12 academic year.

The 2011 class includes incoming freshmen Jeff Tarley, Mark Colabucci, Jesse Schiffbauer, Ross Renzi and December signee Dominic Prezzia.

“We’re very pleased with the quality of student-athletes we’re bringing into our program,” says Turnbull. “As a coaching staff, we believe that we’re bringing in guys with tremendous potential that will be strong contributors to the program and fulfill the needs we have across the various weight classes.”

A Fredericktown native, Tarley is a multi-sport athlete out of Beth-Center High and two-time Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) champion. Wrestling at the 285-pound class, he was a two-time section champ, two-time Southwest regional champion and twice finished in third at the PIAA state wrestling championships. He also came in second place at the Flo Nationals competition in 2010.

Colabucci, from Reservoir High in Fulton, Md., compiled a 143-16 record in high school, including an 87-1 mark between his junior and senior seasons, and set the record as the winningest wrestler in school history. A two-time state champion at the 3A/4A level, he won the title in 2010 at 145 pounds and in 2011 at 171 pounds. He also was a two-time East regional champion, a 2011 Flo National All-American and was named the 2010 Howard County Wrestler of the Year. He is expected to compete in the 174/184-pound range.

Schiffbauer, a Morgantown native, went 144-10 during his prep career at University High and placed multiple times at the West Virginia state tournament. In the 125-pound class, he earned a 41-1 mark his senior year and finished first at the state tournament following a second-place finish and two third-place marks at the event in prior seasons.

A Burke, Va., native, Renzi compiled a 142-16 record at Lake Braddock Secondary. A four-time all-Patriot district champion and four-time Virginia state qualifier, he was the northern regional champion and a first team Washington all-Metro Team selection as a senior. Renzi is expected to compete at 165 or 174 pounds for the Mountaineers.

Prezzia, a native of St. Clairsville, Ohio, signed a national letter of intent with the Mountaineers last December.

Gatten, 82 Bucs in WPIAL hall

One of the great multi-sport athletes to come from Washington and one of the best wrestling teams in the history of the region were announced Tuesday as inductees into the WPIAL Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.

Aaron Gatten, who graduated from Washington High School in 1996, is one of the area's premier three-sport athletes. Gatten was so good that he was awarded the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner Award.

Gatten played football, ran track and he wrestled as he earned 12 varsity letters for the High. He was a state champion sprinter and wrestler before playing football at Penn State.

The Chartiers-Houston 1982 wrestling team won the PIAA Class AAA team championship with a Class AA enrollment, an extraordinary accomplishment. Among the Bucs' wrestlers were current Canon-McMillan coach Chris Mary, who just guided C-M to the state team championship, Phil Mary, a two-time state champion, and Kurt Kesneck, who is the school's current athletic director.

Other inductees include Lavar Arrington of North Hills, Melanie Buddemeyer of Penn Hills, Clinton Davis of Steel Valley, Adam DiMichele of Sto-Rox and Troy Letters of Shaler as athletes; North Allegheny's Bob Miller, Hopewell's Joe Colella and Connellsville's Tom Dolde as coaches and the 1964 Uniontown boys basketball team.

The inductees will be honored at a banquet at the Green Tree Radisson on June 24.

Two wins at Classic

The Pennsylvania and WPIAL teams pulled off a rare doubleplay in winning both dual meets in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic Sunday at Pitt.
In the feature dual meet, Pennsylvania defeated the United States for only the second time in 11 years, 27-18.
Travis Shaffer of Derry, who was originally selected for the WPIAL team but moved into Neff’s spot after the injury, was named Outstanding Wrestler for Pennsylvania with a 7-2 decision over Hunter Stieber of Monroeville, Ohio, at 135 pounds. Stieber was 203-2 and won four state titles.
Mike Ottinger of Parkland might have had the most impressive win with a 6-4 decision over Destin McCauley of Apple Valley, Minn. McCauley had a 286-6 record and five state titles.
Logan Storley, a six-time state champion from Webster, S.D., won a 3-1 decision over John Staudenmayer of Plymouth Whitemarsh at 171.
Nico Megaludis of Franklin Regional capped the match with a 9-3 decision over Conor Youtsey of Mason, Mich., at 125. The weights were predrawn.
The WPIAL made Classic history with the first shutout, a 42-0 win over Michigan.
Micahel Innes of Chartiers-Houston, added just Friday as a replacement, was one of six local winners. Innes decisioned Brian Gibbs of Bedford, 5-3, at 140 pounds.
Waynesburg’s Derrick Nelson nipped Brandon Fifield of Leslie, 3-2, at 119; Canon-McMillan’s Nick Catalano edged Matt Frisch of Oxford, 2-1, at 145; South Fayette’s Nick Carr stopped Dan Fleet or Lowell, 6-1 at 152; Trinity’s Kyle McWreath beat Anthony Abro, 2-1, at 189; and Beth-Center’s Jeff Tarley dropped Cody Wolever of Hesperia, 6-1, at heavyweight.

Michael Innes, a senior at Chartiers-Houston, has been added to the WPIAL team for Sunday's Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic. Innes' inclusion was because of an injury to Dan Neff of Solanco, who was ompeting on the Pa. Team. Derry's Travis Shaffer, who was on the WPIAL Team, was moved up to the Pa. Team and Innes inserted in Shaffer's spot.

Innes has a 132-29 record and is a two-time WPIAL champion. Shaffer has a 147-22 record and a state title to his credentials.

Scott into Hall of Fame

Coleman Scott, a former PIAA and NCAA champion, will be inducted into the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame at the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic Sunday. Scott, who won his NCAA title at Oklahoma State University, was a three-time PIAA champion at Waynesburg High School.
Joining Scott in the hall are Kurt Brenner, a state champion from Freedom; Ken Nellis, a state champion from Shaler; and Steve Snyder, a longtime wrestling official.

Penn State wins team title

PHILADELPHIA – Penn State, led by 184-pound champion Quentin Wright, won its first NCAA wrestling title in 58 years Saturday night by outpointing Cornell.
The Nittany Lions finished with 107 1/2 points to Cornell’s 93 1/2.
“In my mind, I’ve been wanting to be a part of a national championship program since I started at Iowa State as a freshman in 1998,” Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said. “Having not been able to do that for so many years until here we are no and it’s finally happened.”
Wright began the tournament as the ninth seed and won his first national title with a 5-2 decision over Lehigh’s Rob Hamlin.
“It’s a great feeling,” Wright said. “It hasn’t hit me yet. I just got out of the match. But it’s going to get better for a long time.”
Nebraska senior Jordan Burroughs, (36-0), one of five wrestlers to finish the tournament undefeated on the year and the first two-time national champ in program history, dominated the 165 weight class. He took the championship match with an 11-3 victory against Oklahoma’s Tyler Caldwell.
In the only pin of the night, Arizona State’s Bubba Jenkins, who spent four years at Penn State before he transferred, dispatched Nittany Lions’ freshman David Taylor in 4:14 at 157 pounds.
Jenkins said he left Penn State because of Sanderson.
“He didn’t think I was good enough or the right kid to win it at that weight class or any weight class. I wanted to go 149. But he had other ideas. And he got rid of me. And one man’s trash is a whole country’s treasure,” Jenkins said.
Cornell’s Kyle Dake allowed his first point of the tournament in the final against Penn State’s Frank Molinaro, but it hardly mattered as the Big Red sophomore dominated and won his second national title with an 8-1 decision.
At 197 pounds, fourth-seeded Dustin Kilgore (38-2) became the first national champion in program history when he pinned Oklahoma State’s Clayton Foster in 4:56 despite the fact he trailed 5-1 at the time.
In the opening match of the night, Arizona State’s Anthony Robles took a 7-1 decision from Iowa sophomore Matt McDonough. Robles, who was born without a right leg, got the only takedown in the first period of the match and worked a pair of tilts to secure five back points.
“I had a lot of butterflies going out there.,” said Robles, who admitted he’s most likely done as a competitive wrestler but wants to remain involved in one facet or another. “This year I think that was the biggest difference in my wrestling, was my mental game. Going into every match I was real relaxed, real calm. But before that, before this match, it was nothing but butterflies. I felt like I was going throw up, I was so scared I almost started crying.
“But it’s just the atmosphere. It’s the true athletes that are able to just overcome that.”
Sophomore Jordan Oliver (29-0) out of Oklahoma State beat Boise State senior Jordan Hochstrasser for the second time this year as he captured the 133-pound title with an 8-4 decision.
Kellen Russell kept the undefeated streak alive through the first three weights as the Michigan junior took a 3-2 decision over Cal-Poly junior Borislav Novachkov at 141 pounds.
Iowa State’s Jonathan Reader finished a perfect season with a 10-3 decision over Stanford junior Nick Amuchaslegui. Reader, the 68th national champion in program history, went 38-0 and was a four-time All-American.
“Last night I was disappointed with the way I performed (in the semifinals),” Reader said. “I was a little anxious and excited to wrestle. But I came out tonight and made Iowa State proud.”
In the final bout of the night, Lehigh’s Zach Rey (34-1) avenged his only loss of the season with a 2-1 decision in which riding time as the difference, over American’s Ryan Flores.
The three-day event drew a record attendance of 104,260.
