Your input, please

I wanted to make this blog a little more interactive this year but I have been lax about doing so until now. I want your opinion on this question: What one change would you make to wrestling to make it better.
I'll go first.
Numbers on singlets.
Not weight classes, numbers. No. 14 No. 88.
Why in the world are wrestlers not required to wear numbers. It would make it so much easier to know who was wrestling. I've written about this a number of times in my 28 years at the O-R and no one seems to know why numbers are not worn on singlets.
True story, two years ago at WPIAL Team Tournament, woman stands up and yells, "C'mon Kurt." Husband tugs on her shirt. "That's Jimmy." Woman says "OK, c'mon Jimmy." Man on other side of her says, "That's Dustin."
Can you imagine watching a football or basketball game without players wearing numbers? It would be mass confusion, which wrestling is, especially in the postseason tournaments. Put a number on the hip, butt, back or chest of a singlet and it at least gives people a chance to know who's out there.

OK, I got you started. Let me hear from you on your one change to wrestling.

I have two suggestions:

One would be to put "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes in charge of the PIAA or WPIAL wrestling committee. He always did a solid job as the booker for NWA and WCW.

Another is to permit entrance music for wrestlers. Also put the best wrestlers last and make it the main event.

I would like to see mediocre wrestlers stop using legs so much. When used poorly it makes for a sloppy match.

I think we should have a 97 lb class again. A lot of those 103 pounders are fat.

I think a forfeit should be worth 3 points instead of 6. The only way a wrestler should be awarded 6 points,if he earns a pin. Let the matches be decided by the wrestlers who wrestle.

I think instead of holding all those regular season matches, they should just bring the sections in for one big, last-man standing Battle Royal.
Why waste gas at 3.19 a gallon to go see a single match that includes six or seven forfeits?
Also, it would be much more interesting if the wrestlers were allowed to punch, kick and hit.
And why not permit fan interference as well? Maybe the coach could distract the referee while somebody tosses a chair onto the mat.

I think that wrestling needs to be more fan friendly. People are either indifferent to the sport or they are fanatical. One way to make it more fan friendly would be to have more quad meets where you have four teams in one gym and they wrestle each other giving each team 3 dual meets. This way you get to see more wrestling in one day instead of taking 3 different days to see the same amount of wrestling. It now becomes an event, the school can earn some money for their program through concessions and you could get better media coverage if promoted properly.

Others have made some good suggestions including numbered singlets to identify the wrestlers easier, more music & putting the best match last, and making a forfeit less than 6 points.

How about dumping wrestling as a team sport altogether. It's an individual sport pretending to be a team sport. Just have tournaments instead of team matches.

Making a forfeit 3 points makes no sense. With this idea, if a team is leading by 10 points with 3 bouts remaining, then all it has to do is forfeit the final 3 and it gets a 1-point win. It could lead to even more forfeits.
