Powerade
One of the best regular-season wrestling tournaments in the country gets under way at Canon-McMillan High School Tuesday, the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament. The lineup is always impressive and the talent is top-notch.
Here are 10 things to look for in this year's event.
1. Marshall Peppelman, Central Dauphin - The 160-pound senior is looking for his fourth Powerade title. Only Ty Moore of North Allegheny has accomplished that feat.
2. Jim Gulibon, Derry - Gulibon went 39-1 last season and won the 103-pound title in Hershey. He's at 112.
3. Nico Megaludis, Franklin Regional - He was a perfect 46-0 last season, winning his second straight state title. Megaludis (112) and Peppelman are the only undefeated wrestlers from last year returning to this tournament.
4. Levi Clemons, Kissimmeee Osceola, Fla. - Went 52-4, won a state title and is making his Powerade debut at 171.
5. Bazell Partridge, Collins Hill, Ga. - Besides a 53-win season last year that produced a state title, he has one of the all-time great names for this "Christmas" tournament. He's at 112.
6. Nate Gaffney, Connellsville - The 215-pounder is a load, and a returning state champion.
7. Shady Side Academy - The school has three wrestlers - Geoff Alexander (119), Frank Martellotti (130) and Matt Cunningham (171) - who could win titles.
8. Christiansburg, Va. - Winning a team title would not be a surprise because this team has won eight of them in the Virginia tournament.
9. A dark horse - Tanner Hough of Westmont Hilltop, a fifth seed at 125.
10. The youngsters - It will be interesting to see how three freshmen - Cody Wiercioch (152) of Charleroi and Tanner Sutton (130) and Garrett Vulcano (145) of Chartiers-Houston - perform in this event.
Who won't be there: Mike Hull of Canon-McMillan is only competing in team events this season.
Schedule - The two-day tournament begins 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Semifinals are 11:30 a.m. Wednesday with the finals at 7:30 p.m. There is a ton of wrestling in between.

Shram scrammmed to 103.
Shram hasnt been over 102.5. He has been at 103 all year and only wrestles 112 for dual meets. Before you talk down on a kid know the facts. He is one of the smallest 103 pounders in the WPIAL. Make no mistake though he is a hammer.
Wow - 112 should be a great weight to watch. Nico will be tested on that undefeated record.
What role will Trinity School Board member and wrestling expert who quit wrestling in ninth grade Scott Day, have in the seeding of this tournamnet.

I AM AT SOUTHMORELAND. WE ARE PACKED IN HERE LIKE SARDINES. THERE ISN'T ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE TEAMS LET ALONE FANS. DO NOT COME HERE. THIS HAS TO BE A FIRE HAZARD.
Why is there never anything in your paper about Jefferson Morgan Wrestling???? Even when we wrestled Wash High from the Observers home town not a mention...WAKE UP OBSERVER..GREENE COUNTY BUYS YOUR PAPER TOO!!!!!
It is up to the school to submit the results. Your gripe is with the AD not the OR. Furthermore JM isn't the powerhouse of the Headlee era anymore. They are a footnote in today's wresting climate.
103 lb weight class: At last count there are 22 freshmen, 4 sophmore, 4 juiors, 1 senior and only 31 wrestlers in a 43 team tourny.
Take another wt class say 160, 4 - Fr, 6 - So, 8 - Jr, 16 Sr.
They need to get rid of the 103 weight class or call it freshman wrestling. Wiercioch is in a real class at 152.
Didn't realize Meguludis was at 119. That is a great weight class with him, Nelson and Alexander
Couldn't agree more about 103lbs. call it freshman wrestling. Cody at 152 is the real story here. He has the body of a kid who is 18 but Cody is only 14. He looks like he's about 8 years old. a very good looking young man he is. nice friendly jovial kid. just don't go on the mat with him cause you gonna get beat.
If the JM-Washington match results were not in the newspaper, then it wasn't called in. It is the responsibility of the coaches to call in results we do not cover. As long as it's done on the night it was wrestled and called in before our deadline, it would be in the paper.
The ADs know this and the coaches do too. Some don't call when they lose, but they promise the opposing coach that they will call the O-R for them. It's an old ruse.
It is true that we might miss getting a result in the paper now and then but what about the other 99 percent? We can only assume they simply don't care about their fans who want to follow the team.
