Grumblings from Johnstown
There are certain things you can not control in life, such as the wireless Internet going out during the first hour of the Southwest Region Tournament in Johnstown and never coming back. That left me with no way to blog and no way to let anyone know what went on today.
Until now.
Well, here are some of the highlights:
Tanner Sutton of Chartiers-Houston upset District 6 champion Patrick Myers of Penn Cambria in the 125-pound quarterfinals at just about the same time that Anthony Elias of Shady Side Academy upset Joe Lascari, a District 5 champion from North Star. Both fell into the wrestlebacks and will wrestle each other in today's consolations. The loser goes home.
Sutton, meanwhile, is wrestling on only one good ankle. He suspects that he tore ligaments in his right one in the WPIAL Championships, against Elias in the semifinals. Sutton and Elias wrestle in the semifinals again.
At 112, Bentworth's Vince Vahaly, Burgettstown's Tyler Rommes and Charleroi's Aaron Toth each lost and only Toth remains alive in the consolations.
At 119, Tanner Hough of Westmont-Hilltop, who has relatives in Washington County, had an odd thing happen. Hough, a junior, won his 100th match of his career in the semifinals against C-H's Vic LiPari. It was the 100th bout of the tournament.
No problem for Cody Wiercioch, who outscored two opponents by a combined 16-2 and is in the semifinals.
Beth-Center's Jeff Tarley, Charleroi's Jake Linn and J-M's Zach Doman are in the semifinals at heavyweight in one of the best group of athletes at that weight class in a long time.
Until now.

Bummer about thr Internet service, Joe. I hope it's working tonight!...RGR
I wish the AAA venue was as big as the War Memorial. I heard that it's a little tight in Canon Mac, Although it is the best Gym in the WPIAL. Some great matchups in AAA and AA in the semis this weekend. If only they would go back to one state tourny, just imagine the talent that we would have in the region. 103 Nick Roberts VS conner Schram ,130 Martellotti vs Zymroz, 135 Aj Schopp vs Catalano/Shaffer, 152 would be loaded with Mckillop, Weirchoch, Gibbons, 171 Matt Cunningham/Deslouriers,Burnheimer vs Hills/Baxter/Wilps. 285 would also be a dogfight, the SW AA heavyweight in Loaded.
I went to Canon-Mac but must admit it isn't a great venue - too small. Char-Valley was the best place and they should attemt to get back there. It was easy to access (just off I-79) and everyone could see all the mats. Using a "back room" as they do at CM does a disservice to the fans. I just quit going like many others since they left CV. Robert Morris was even better than any of the places they have jumped to in recent years, i.e. Norwin.
spladle--when was the last time you went to Canon Mac? They had 5 mats in the main gym and none in the auxillary gym. Of course having 5 mats in the main gym means less seating but that won't be a problem tonight.
Char Valley could only put 3 down in my memory serves me correclty
Ya chartiers valley's gym is smaller than canon mac. I like the dual gym system that canon mac runs, there is plenty of floor space.
I attended the whole tournament, got to each session early and had great seats. Plus the balcony concept is something that is unique and provides much more room for viewing. I think the people at Canon Mac do a great job in hosting tournaments. I don't understand the "back gym" comments?

I don't understand having the event at the War Memorial. What a dump. They can only put 4 mats in there and you can't see anything unless you sit directly in the middle. When will this event be held at a different venue?
What is wrong with the D-7 area ever other year. Why do we have to purchase rooms every year. It would be nice to take are boys back home to rest and eat. Johnstown, what a hole. It must be political.
Now that squid sissy Murtha is dead we can have it in Washington.
