First let me say after being around AA wrestling for years I am upset with myself for sitting all day Saturday in the Charleori and watching maybe 10 minutes of actual wrestling. While bored I read the program and saw 132 wrestlers listed. 70 advanced. Jefferson and Carmichaels had 11,Derry and Bentworth had 10 each, West Green 7 and so on. BUT WAIT Next week 98 leave Char-Valley in AA. That is 7 full teams (without forfiets) 14 on the 1st place team,14 on the 2nd place team and so on till 14 on the 7th place team. This is Terrible. I agree with many of the other writers that this is why no one is interested in wrestling anymore. Can't the WPIAL see the basketball scores from the last several days and see that advancing so many loosers isn't the answer?

The WPIAL can see the basketball scores and do know that that all these wrestlers advance. This is their philosophy: everyone gets a medal, everyone is a winner, everyone advances as far as possible.

And the tournaments suffer because of it. It's not just in this district but throughout the state.

So don't ask them to cut it back, because it is not in their DNA. It's no different at the state level. The PIAA would rather ruin the finals by wrestling four medal places at once to cut some time off the tournament than say cut out the 7th and 8th place medalists.

Tell me what the 8th place medalist is thinking on the stand. Is it, "I got a medal" or "Boy, I finished in the middle of the 16 man bracket and they still gave me a medal."

There is a difference but the PIAA doesn't see it.

Joe-You are also 100% wright but what can we do to get these hard headed WPIAL steering cmm. members who think they can walk on water the way they strut around the gyms to see the light? outreau

Joe Did u realize that in the AA format Starting with the section thru the regionals a wrestler could be PINNED 6 times and still go to states? Why do people make such a big deal out of making it nowadays since the PIAA made it so possible or should I say so easyMew

what is the purpose of having 2 refs on the mat when they obviously still cant make the right calls...the kid at 132 from charleroi should have been dq because of his cheap shots during the match and his classless antics after match ended.also kid from j m at 106 had back points from takedown at worst a 2 count but a 4 count and didnt get back points guess u dont get rewarded for wrestling just stalling and bad refs

If all the Brackets had ranked kids in it like 126 then i dont mind seeing good kids get out of sections. 2aa derry, charleroi, bentworth , jefferson morgan , west greene all had kids who had winning records and if they didnt take the top 5. wpials would of suffered as the top 5 out of 7 in wpials came from 2aa

I have written numerous articles and columns on the postseason in wrestling but I doubt they will change. Everyone goes home from sectionals feeling a little let down.

I believe I figured out that you could lose 9 times in the postseason and still medal in Hershey in Class AA. Amazing.

12:04 Disappointing post.

I saw one of the most excited wrestling matches I've ever witnessed in the 132 final. The match was 7-6 after two periods, but the conditioning of the JM wrestler became a factor in the 3rd period when he was eventually pinned. Unfortunately, I saw the 132 JM wrestler verbalize to the 132 Charleroi wrestler after the JM wrestler was pinned which caused some escalation which was easily managed by the referee.

This episode had nothing to do with the actual outcome of the match.

Unfortunately, I also witnessed a JM father go off the deep end, run into the designated wrestlers area and scream in the Charleroi wrestler's face at the end of the match which necessitated police intervention. That was unfortunate as well.

Kudos to the local police department for deescalating a situation before it got worse.

Fortunately, both wrestlers qualified and likely will face each other again...

In my view, again, it was an excellent match and both wrestlers will advance far into the tournament.

Emotional will always run high with a last second loss or victory, but parents must keep their emotions in check.

I am amazed that the comment referring to a student as "classless" and a "cheap shot" artist slipped past the moderator, but, the attempt to rebuke what was said was moderated from the conversation. Considering the moderator, Joe Tuscano, was not even in attendance, I am surprised that he would permit the comment at 12:04. Shame on you, Joe...

How many wrestlers in AA would have winning records even at 126 if it wasn't for forfiets? Raise my hand ref cause i really whiped that guy named Forfiet.

Being a graduated high school wrestler, and not a parent of a wrestler, I'm going to chime in on this because it's a little ridiculous.

Yes, there are a lot of people that move on from each tourney in AA. But, making the PIAA state tournament is nothing to be thrown by the wayside. That is an elite tournament, with no slouches. So even if everybody just entered into their respective regional tournaments, there won't be any "nobodies" at the state tournament.

Now that I'm on a nationally-competitive college wrestling team, I've realized that PA is one of the most elite states producing wrestlers. Not only top-tier guys, but the depth that comes from this state is remarkable.

P.S. Joe Tuscano doesn't have the ability to change the post-season format. So quit complaining to him.

We start at section and end at states in a 4-week wrestle off. Not perfect but I'd rather see as many as our kids get a chance as those on the east side. If you don't like seeing the qualifiers purchase your ticket to Hershey and skip wasting your weekend sitting in gyms every weekend. what I seen the weekend was the best kids moving on in the system the way it is currently set up. If you have a problem with the system you should probably spend your time writing to the authorities who can implement change in the system instead a writing in a severly biased blog. Although you can go to be knowing you had 15 blogs supporting you. sweet dreams, hero.

anyone know why long def out of the 145 match?

I was told the DQ at 145 was because of a series of locked hands.

It's hard to be DQed for locking hands when they didn't even wrestle. I believe it had something to do with a knee injury he sustained earlier in the season.

I need to correct myself. The locked hands incident came at 106 for fifth place. Not sure what the other one was about but I will check.
