Section tournament notes
Fort Cherry’s 195-pound senior Tanner Garry, who is an invited walk-on for Bowling Green’s football team, has pulled out of the postseason. He had a 12-1 record.
Fort Cherry’s other highly regarded heavyweights – Corey Garry and Greg Kumer – are healthy and happy at heavyweight and 220, respectively.
Jefferson-Morgan’s John Demaske was expected to drop to 106 but changed his mind and will remain at 113.
Ditto for Bentworth’s Francis Mizia, whose drop to 152 didn’t take place. He will stay at 160.
John Davidson, a rugby player at Burrell who came out for wrestling last month to help the Bucs earn their sixth consecutive WPIAL Team Tournament title, has apparently returned to rugby. He’s not competing, despite a top ranking at 195.
Defending state champion Jason Nolf of Kittanning ruined the day of some 113 pounders by dropping to that weight class.
Derry’s three-time state champion Jimmy Gulibon is back after sitting out the past six weeks with a knee injury. He is at 126.
Chartiers-Houston’s Andy Vernau, Steve Hazlett and Jordan Henderson won’t be competing for various reasons.
Kumer, Nathan Reckner (120) of South Side Beaver and Tanner Sutton (145) of Chartiers-Houston are each looking for their third title.

Hats off to Cody Wiercioch's family for moving. If I was a kid in AA I would do anything to try to get to a AAA school. Even if you are the champ in AA what have you really won? When considering the schools and competition in AA. Why dosen't AA just drop all the local tournaments and advance the whole team to Hershey?
If a kid in AA can't make the top 5 out of Burgettstown,Charleroi, or Avonworth then the top 7 out of Char Valley then maybe he should start thinking about basketball.
Year in and year out there are AA Champs that could beat AAA champs...
Head to head there are quite a few weight classes that are stronger in AA.
Idiotic statements
did u ever wrestle ? obviously u never made it to states because if u did u wouldnt b making such stupid comments..some of u people are funny
It should not be allowed for a Rugby player to Join the wrestling team for one month to help get them to States and then leave the team after States...that is unfair to all the other teams who work hard all season..Come on Burrel your team is good do you really need to run lesser teams into the ground...I hope you feel real proud...
When is the WPIAL wrestling Comm. going to hit their heads and wake up Mr. Volcano? Taking 5 then 7. Who wants to watch all these loosers wrestle each other week after week after week? BORING BORING BORING DEAD.
Joe, Do me a favor and count how many fans are in the empty Charlorei gym on Saturday. Devide that by 11 High Schools and send your results to the WPIAL. Maybe if you are lucky it will be about 20 people per school. Thanks.
Interesting comment; from what I read the Weircioch family moved soley for academic reasons. They didn't lie to the PIAA did they? There are talented AAA wrestlers; and talented AA wrestlers. Anyone who has wrestled in the AA qualifiers at Johnstown know they earned the right to be in Hershey. If I'm not mistaken didn't Cody Wierchok lose to in the WPIAL and Regional to a AA kid last year by the name of McKillop to include stripping him of any chance at being a 4-time state champ. I wonder why the "hats off" model family waited until his the kid's Junior year to move to AAA? Some families choose not to uproot the entire family and for the sake of a kids sports career, most do not. feel wrestling is the center of the universe. To 8:05 - I wouldn't knock B-ball too hard; have you seen some the NBA stars' salaries vs. an ex-high school state wrestling champ who might make it a few years in MMA or as a wrestling coach. Maybe you should try to suggest improvements to the AAA system instead of whining about what the AA does. You revealed yourself again einstein.
2:18PM
you read wrong.
One AA name comes to mind...Travis Mckillop..
Its a shame reading the bashing of AA. Charelroi is not a powerhhouse but are going in the right direction. Cudos to the kids; I've seen several kids interviewed and make only positive comments about their old teammate and wishing him the best. The school hired a coach who has kept the team focused and working harder than ever. Two Charleroi wrestlers topped the 100-win mark and surpassed the old school record. Three kids are potential state qualifiers. The fans go to support the team. Charelroi has never had a big numbers, a lot of teams don't; but the kids who are on that team work their butts off with a coach who truely cares about wrestling and the program. The kids love to wrestle; the coach loves to coach; and the fans come to watch the kids. Last time I check, this is still a high school sport. Some people just don't realize that their are kids who know calculus and physics will get them further than a takedown especially if you blow out a knee down the road.
Another interesting match Francis Mizia (AA) vs. Dobbin (AAA)...
didn't travis mckillop (AA) beat werchok several times last year? I hear that AA kid, Guilibon, is not bad and could be the 10th 4-time state champ.
Amazing that the 7:48, 8:05, 1:00, and 1:17 somehow slipped past the Moderator.
Well, since you moderate every comment on this board, we have to assume you condone this childish behavior...
Bravo, Joe.
we call him the Terminator in Burrell; for ending hopes of potential 4-time state champ.
Another one comes to mind, Carey Kolat, Einstein!!!!!!!
Terminator the bull really after only winning one state title?!? Now that is funny!!!!
Colat was a legend, but McKillop's upset over werchuk in the state finals had jaws dropping.
Gulibon(AA)over Shorts 126
Kwasne(AA) over Krenzelak 132
Sutton(AA) over Minor 126
Mizia(AA) over Pihiou 160
DesLauriers(AA) over Thomas 182
Garry (AA) over Klempay HVY
My favorite match would be Mizia and Dobbin...
Not a shot garry over klempay! Klempay kills him day in and day out when fort cherry goes to cm to workout.. Not a shot
Its funny a wrestler as CW with six years wrestling experience, is able to raise so much hoopla.
I belive the average years of experience of a HS wrestler is 10-12 years. Just sayn, its very easy to check I guess thats why his accomplishments are so eye opening
How many people using this site Really know what they are talking about? Do they not know that back in the 80s the state thought it would be good to put the AA champs against the AAA champs. They did. A week after the states the matches was held back at Penn State. Not at Rec Hall but at State College High School gym. It was so degrading to the AA and embarrassing it didn't last so the state dropped it. Check out these FACTS then write how the AA can hold their own.
10:08PM
You put those same kids in AA against the Central Dauphin team that the Big Macs just beat, you will be wrestling for 3rd or lower.
The top three 126 pounders in AA would easily beat top three in AAA
I wouldn't take my hat off for a family moving to wrestle for a particular team. It's thier choice. I wouldn't but thats my choice. If a kid is talented and works very hard they'll have opportunities. Derry(AA) doesn't have a powerhouse, but Guilibon is going for a 4th state title and headed for Penn St. High school wrestling lasts four short years, but life goes on after its over and the economy is tough but I'm sure the family thought beyond four years and wrestling.
"As proof of my theories validity, I offer you the wrestling tournaments from 25 years ago". By that logic, the Pittsburgh Pirates would be a preseason World Series favorite. Let's get back to reality...
2012: Can Jimmy Gulibon (AA) "hold his own" vs Colton Shorts (AAA) ?
2012: Could Francis Mizia (AA) "hold his own" against Dario Dobbin (AAA)?
2012: DesLauriers(AA) over Thomas Canon-Mac(AAA)
2010: Cody Wiercioch (AA) pinned or "embarrassed" (your words) Renzelli (AAA) Canon-Mac in a minute.
And on, and on, and on...
i really dont think that what happened in the eighties had anything to do with aaa not wrestling aa anymore. show me that fact somewhere. maybe the state just wanted to go against the usa all stars...which would bring together great competition from across the COUNTRY. which would probably bring more money in....hmmm. and if u wanna look at facts here is one check out the dapper dan line ups last year..the pa team had six aa kids and 5 aaa kids. not including henderson who used to be aa before he transferred to kiski prep. how bout the wpial team who had 7 aa wrestlers to 5 aaa wrestlers. im not arguing that aaa may be deeper as far as talent goes, because they are deeper. but the best in aa can compete with the best in aaa. when a kid is born they arent seperated in the nursery into aaa and aa lol they are born equal.
to 10:12; a proud parent no doubt; cw is a talented wrestler; did fall short in both Regional/states last year so won't make that legendary 4X state champ status. Time will tell if he is repeats as state champion. Right now all eyes on Guilibon, great wrestler, making a run as 10th 4X state champ and Marstellar who could potentially be the 11th and has been awesome in Fargo as well. He has a lot of wrestling ahead, but definitely has everyone's attention.
If I remember correctly, the AAA - AA challenge had no PIAA ties. It was a postseason all-star event just like the Wrestling Classic. It lasted a few years then lost steam.
regardless of the reason, its for the better. why have our aa and aaa guys keep beatin on each other? let em beat on some us all stars.
