Wrestling realignment

Wrestling realignment was released by the WPIAL Tuesday night. Canon-McMillan is reunited with Waynesburg, McGuffey and Trinity in Section 4-A. The odd move came when the WPIAL sent Peters Township into Section 2B with other South Hills schools, including Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair.

Ringgold was flipped from Section 2B to 2A with better rivals in Belle Vernon and Connellsville.

Burgettstown got bumped into Section 1B with mostly Beaver County teams. Avella was put in Section 1A with local rivals Chartiers-Houston, Fort Cherry and South Fayette Mapletown is the new member in Section 2A and Washington could be leaving permanently if the program is eliminated.

These geographic divisions will always have some outliers in order to make the number of teams equal. However, I'd say that the placement of Peters makes more sense with this alignment than it does in todays 4A/4B split, where the Peters bus drives past Upper St Clair HS to go north on 19 to wrestle Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, etc., and the USC bus drives past Peters HS to drive south on 19 to wrestle CanonMac, etc.

I guess it must be the first day of Lent, because something smells fishy here...

We kind of all agree that the WPIAL steering Comm. doesn't do much right but when they do they should be told about it. This time at least they got the C-M - Trinity matches back and seemed to try to get the travel time and areas of the schools in the same sections. So a good job for a refreshing change.

Joe this quote hits the nail on the head here. What was the WPIAL thinking??

"The odd move came when the WPIAL sent Peters Township into Section 2B with other South Hills schools, including Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair."

Is it me or is there something seriously wrong with 3 of these sub sections? 2B,4A and 5A which is probably a typo and should be 4B make little or no sense at all. Moon twp Borders Montour and West A School districts and is a hop skip and a jump down state Rt 60 to Central Valley and Hopewell. It is only about a 17 mile drive to Blackhawk believe it or not. Why are these teams not together? According to mapquest it is a 54.1 mile drive from Moon High School to Waynesburg. That is seriously crazy!!! What was the actual thought process behind this realignment? Moon might as well hop on a space shuttle for there trip to Waynesburg. The following trio belongs together USC, Lebo and Char Valley they all border eachother...Peters Twp might as well just join hands at the altar they are that close to CM.. Wouldn't it not make sense to put Peters with the Wash County Schools that are right next door?? Would someone please explain how they make these decisions?

There is no need to worry what section anyone is in. Do you know that this weekend in the WPIAL AA Championships at Char-Valley there are 37 wrestlers with losing records. 8 more just at 500. That is 45 without a winning record. And they are advancing 98. So just wait one or two more years and everyone will be at Hershey. "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND"

Better yet please explain how the individuals at WPIAL seed the brackets. Every bracket in Section 4 has issues, some serious. The fact that there is a Piper on the steering committee and Section 4 132 bracket is seriously slanted to a Piper make one pause at what the WPIAL is doing. At best they got the 1 and 2 seeds correct everything else is a crap shoot. If the WPIAL could just be consistent and fair with seedings. Publish the seeding criteria and follow it.

I will try to help. At the WPIAL tourny the top 3 wrestlers are seeded. The rest fall into pre-drwn brackets the same way thet do it at Regionals. Hope this helps.

1:33 you made me pull out the brackets. Not knowing these guys, but just looking at the records I suppose you could argue that either Douglas or Dunn might have gotten the #4 seed. Piper split his H2H matches with Dunn. But Dunn is likely to get Piper after the pigtail so they'll settle this on the mat. Douglas is a different story with a 20-7 record. But, if I were Douglas, I prefer to be in the bottom half of the bracket, away from McGuire. So, in terms of the #4 seed, be careful what you wish for, I guess.

I agree with 2:16, the WPIAL has improved on the current alignment with this re-alignment for next year. It is not perfect, but you can't get geographically perfect and keep the sections balanced with the exact same number of teams.

2:26 - there always is going to be an odd man out. I agree that Moon has a long bus ride to Waynesburg, but then so did teams like Bethel and Lebo the past two years. Since Waynesburg and McGuffey choose to wrestle up in AAA somebody has to go wrestle them. If you move Moon to the 4B side, then which other 4B goes to 4A? It would be a similar bus ride for all of them.

And sure, Chartiers Valley should be in 2B, but then where do you stick West Mifflin? This is basically musical chairs, and when the music stops somebody is left without a comfortable chair.

In my post above about the 132 bracket I probably also should have mentioned Whipkey in the same breath as Douglas. Could be #4 but then you're in the top half of the bracket.

Mister 1:33 you owe the Pipers an apology. Shane Piper took 3rd in his bracket yesterday, even better than his "unearned" 4 seed.

Magic City will be hard pressed to put any QUALITY wrestlers for any type of wrestling. Besides the (Dean OF Wrestling), Nicky G.

yea but magic city gets doesn't lose your 12 bucks every week as a result of sneaking you're family in the side door because you're too cheap to pay the door price.

5:57: Is this a game where we guess the missing word? Being that there is only one Nick G. listed, I'm assuming you're saying that team has no quality wrestlers and I guess the wrestling "type" is flokstyle?? I believe that team had two champions and a third place at WPIALs. If I'm not mistaken they only had one Runner-up last year but, I guess 2011runner-up at WPIAL and Runner-up at States defines QUALITY only when its CW falling short to McKillop (AA) TWICE in a row. Thank you for placing your foot conveniently in your mouth. I think they have a few very tough wrestlers with a legit chance to do very well this year. The kids were very focused and supported each other during their interview.
