Up, down semis for CM

Canon-McMillan had a so-so semifinal round in the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships Saturday morning. The Big Macs managed to get two of five wrestlers into tonight's finals: Connor Schram and Cody Wiercioch.
Interestingly, their careers have been identical in this tournament. Both wrestlers were champions as freshmen only to lose in the finals last season. Wiercioch wrestled for Charleroi last season and competed in the Class AA portion.
Schram won a 3-2 decision over Grimaldi Gonzalez of Bethlehem Liberty at 120 pounds and will take on Godwyn Nyama of Brashear in the finals.
Wiercioch captured an 11-4 decision from Connor Moran of Solanco in the semifinals and meets Shane Springer of Norristown in the 170 finals.
Macri had the most interesting and controversial bout, nearly upsetting defending state champion Billy Rappo of Council Rock South at 113. Macri gave up a controversial escape at the end of the second period to have his lead cut to 2-1. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie and no one scored in the first OT. Macri reversed Rappo in the second overtime for a 4-2 lead. In a strategic move that will certainly be debated, Macri decided to let Rappo up before the period started to cut the lead to 4-3. Rappo got a takedown with three seconds left in the OT for the win.
"His best position is his feet," said CM head coach Chris Mary. "Dalton is a big freestyler and is best on his feet. The kid took a nice shot and finished it."
Solomon Chishko lost his rematch with Steve Spearman of Erie McDowell by an identical finish, a decision in overtime. Spearman got a takedown in the first OT for a 3-1 win at 138.
Cody Klempay was forced to default to Averee Robinson of Susquehanna Township in his semifinal bout at heavyweight. Klempay was leading Robinson 4-3 when he let him go for an escape and grabbed his shoulder for the third time in the match. Klempay defaulted in 3:00. There was concern Klempay might have torn a ligament.
