Another title for Scott

STILLWATER, Okla.– Former Oklahoma State NCAA wrestling champion Coleman Scott added the title of World Cup Individual Champion to his career resume after going 5-0 this past weekend competing for Team USA at the FILA World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling in Baku, Azerbaijan. Scott’s undefeated run was a key factor in Team USA winning the bronze medal at the event.
Scott opened his day with a 0-1, 3-1, 2-1 win over Japan’s Kenichi Yumoto to lift Team USA to a 5-2 win over Japan. He then hammered Turkey’s Bayosul Mahmut, 4-2, 5-0 as part of another 5-2 win for the Americans. The lone U.S. defeat of the event was a 4-3 setback at the hands of traditional world power and eventual team champion Iran, but Scott still had a good showing in that clash, scoring a 1-0, 2-1 victory over Behnam Ehsanpoor.
A win by decision from Scott over Malkhaz Zarkua contributed to a 6-1 Team USA victory over Georgia and lifted the Americans into the bronze medal match against Russia, who Team USA dispatched by a 5-2 score thanks in part to Scott’s win by decision over Aleksandar Bagmaev.
Scott’s next competition will be the biggest of his career to date, as he suits up on June 7 to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. He will wrestle Team USA’s top-ranked wrestler at 60kg, Reece Humphrey, at Beat the Streets Gala in New York City. The winner of that clash gets a best-of-three winner-take-all series with Shawn Bunch for a spot on the U.S. Olympic roster.

Can anyone explain to me why Scott has to beat the top ranked USA wrestler for the opportunity to wrestle someone else for a spot on the olympic team? Shouldn't an olympic trial title and world cup title get him in?
Under normal circumstances, yes. But international wrestling is anything but normal. The reason Scott has to wrestle off is because the two wrestlers were ranked higher than he was and that's one of the perks they get: to challenge the trials winner.
It's absolute nonsense. The team should be formed at the Olympic Trials. It's one reason why so many people are not great international wrestling fans. Too many silly rules.
I want Scott to represent us in olympics! But please understand that had not Shawn Bunch taken the trials off and wrestled in the last qualifier then nobody would be representing the US at that weight in the olympics.
They should have held the trials for that weight class at an earlier date than they did, that way the winner of the trials could have went and tried to earn their OWN qualification into the olympics instead of the top ranked wrestler missing the trials to try and qualify that weight class into the games.
J. - You could never work for the U.S. Olympic Committee because your thought process makes too much sense. :)
And Brian - Scott should have gone. Simply schedule the Trials earlier. He's your champion, right?
