PIAA Team Tournament
After sitting through a 14-hour day and watching hundreds of bouts in the PIAA Team Tournament, I can't help but wonder one thing. Where have all the good teams gone? If this tournament was filled with the two best wrestling teams from each of the state's districts, I would shudder to think about how bad the ones were that didn't make it to Hershey.
Granted, the tournament is a grind and the PIAA should take the blame. Who cares what team is third? Will you remember by the end of the week?
But the wrestling was bad on so many levels. Poor technique, lack of fundamentals, and a lot of one-move specialists clogged the state's main team event. We tend to be parochial in our view of wrestling, maybe overstating the talent level in the district but I don't think so this year. Mt. Pleasant, Burrell, Canon-McMillan and Penn-Trafford didn't win gold but their matches were collectively much more enjoyable to watch than some of the stinkers from other district teams.
Maybe it's just a down year for talent. Let's hope that's all it is.
