Contagious

Wrestling has popped into the papers for some unusual reasons. Mat Herpes has forced Connellsville and Pine-Richland to suspend matched because of an outbreak of "Mat Herpes." Skin infections have always been a worry in the sport and this is not the first time that this has happened. I recall Trinity and McGuffey cancelling two dual meets because of it.

One of the biggest problems in fighting this is that wrestlers are sometimes stubborn about their personal hygiene. Keeping yourself and your clothes clean are tantamount to avoinding an outbreak.

It's not just wrestling's problem but a problem that exists in all high school sports. Schools spend a lot of money on sanitizing their locker rooms and equipment but if the athletes don't have good habits, something like this is bound to happen.

You can contract herpes in any sport. It's not what sport you play, but the sanitary conditions surrounding it.

I've never heard of anyone contracting herpes from playing golf.

My husband is a doctor and he
he has treated several patients with staph infections and the like, including a golf caddie who kept getting abscesses similar to mat herpes on his neck until he landed in the hospital. The doctors linked the infections to abrasions from the man’s golf bag strap. Wrestling is a sport that deserves respect.
Thank you
