A tribute

(The following is a submitted tribute to the late Barry Gashel, a respected official and friend of wrestling)

With the regular season over, and postseason heating up, a reflection is made on someone missing from wrestling this year. Barry Gashel had served as a wrestling official for the past 35 yeas, more than 15 of those as Washington County Wrestling Official's Chapter Interpreter. There he served as mentor to experienced and less experienced officials by clarifying rules. Here was an individual who truly loved the sport. Barry had fought cancer for 2 1/2 years, with that final match coming on April 24, 2007. Respect has been paid to him at tournaments this year by moments of silence, the Most Valuable Wrestler Award being named in his honor, and wrist bands bearing his name were worn by officials. Here was a man who gained respect by his deeds. He was a family man who was also a coach, official, businessman, fireman, and friend.

Washington County Wrestling Official
Secretary/Treasurer,
Ken McWilliams

(I couldn't say it any better Ken)
