Losing coaches

That term can have two connotations. It could describe an unsuccessful coach or it could mean that the number of coaches leaving their wrestling posts is increasing. In this case, it's the latter and that does not make me a happy man.

In just a few months, West Greene lost Allen Hughes, Bentworth lost Chuck Wonsettler and Burgettstown lost Terry Havelka. All three resigned after long careers. Combined, they have nearly 90 years of experience in the corner. But more than that, this trio was great to work with. In the nearly three decades that I've covered wrestling, these three were among the most accessible and always up front with their comments and perspectives. To a journalist, that's like nirvana.

These three had varying degrees of success. West Greene and Burgettstown are two of the most successful Class AA programs in the WPIAL. Bentworth didn't have a lot of team wins but Wonsettler managed to get the most out of his kids in the postseason. His son C.J. was the last wrestler in Class AA to win a state title in Hersheypark Arena. The state tournament is now held at Giant Center.

Situations change. I know that. But it doesn't mean I have to like it. And the wrestling fans at these schools should make sure they say thank you to these men for the work they put in, the success they brought out in their kids and the excitement they gave you for all those years.

Terry Havelka completely rebuilt a once great program that had died and brought it back to not only respectability but to a high level of success. From 11 kids in the room to 25. From no team victories to play-offs every year. From kids not even competing in sections to Dan Conley totally dominating the bracket at Hershey Terry did it with hard work and credibility. Whoever takes over has some huge shoes to fill replacing Brad Abbot and him. Good Luck.
