Cadet nationals

Here is a story from Craig Sesker of USA Wrestling on the cadet national tournament

FARGO, N.D. – Four top wrestlers kept their quests alive to repeat as Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champions.

Returning Cadet Greco-Roman champions Dylan Akers of Texas (91 pounds), Zane Richards of Illinois (130), Oliver Pierce of Texas (152) and Brooks Black of Pennsylvania (285) each made it through the opening day undefeated.

The Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman competition kicked off the 40th ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals Championships on Sunday at the FargoDome.

Akers went 4-0, Richards went 6-0, Pierce went 6-0 and Black went 5-0 during the two sessions on Sunday.

The seven-day USA Wrestling event is being held on 23 mats at the FargoDome on the campus of North Dakota State University.

Cadet Greco-Roman wrestlers will resume action today. The Cadet finals are scheduled for Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Cadets feature the nation’s top 15-16 year olds.

Also in Cadets, returning double All-American Brandon George of Utah went undefeated in Greco-Roman on Sunday at 91 pounds. George went 4-0.

Returning double All-American Jordan Rogers of Washington went 6-0 with six pins at 171.

The Junior Nationals competition in Greco-Roman will begin Monday morning at 9:30.

Juniors feature the nation’s top 16-18 year olds.

Wrestlers who won titles at the Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year are in the running to win Triple Crowns in Fargo. They would need to pull off the Greco-Roman and freestyle double in Fargo this week to accomplish the rare feat.

Michigan’s Taylor Massa, Minnesota’s Jake Waste and Wisconsin’s Devin Peterson won USA Wrestling Cadet Triple Crowns in 2009. Montana’s Jade Rauser became the first Junior Triple Crown winner last year.
