Hearing set for Wiercioch transfer
The WPIAL will hold a hearing during its October board meeting on the transfer of Cody Wiercioch from Charleroi High School to Canon-McMillan. Charleroi did not sign off on Wiercioch's transfer and the WPIAL determined that a meeting was needed for the school to present its argument.
The hearing is scheduled for Oct. 17.
Wiercioch, a junior, won a state wrestling title for the Cougars as a freshman and finished second last season. He and his family moved into a house in the Canon-McMillan School District this summer.
Canon-McMillan won the PIAA Class AAA team title at last year's individual championships in Hershey and has captured the past two WPIAL team championships.

and the saga continues
No saga - hearing will take less than a six minute wrestling match. The move was strictly academically motivated.
Wpial should just blow up there current system,,, Cant see anyone's eligiblity being taken after Chisko won!! Are you feaking kidding me.
It will be a quick slam dunk - don't worry about it. They have not stopped moves for 5 years or more in Wrestling.
Will hearing be open to the public?
They shouldn't stop the transfer. The kid AND his family moved into the district. If someone is willing to move, more power to them.
Just saying here, do you mean if I move my family from Wash to Canons burgh I have to go to a meeting to see if I can swim in the Canons burgh pool. All because someone in the Wash district didn't sign off on it.I'm not sneaking over the fence here .
10:23 No not saying that at all. He could swim in the pool. He will need to follow the rules of the canonburg pool in order to swim. Now if he wants join the High School Swim Team which has league rules established by the WPIAL/PIAA, he will need to follow those rules as well. One rule is that you can not move to another school for athletic intent. If he can prove he didn't move for that reason then he can be part of the league and also be on the swim team.
For Wrestling, he can wrestle outside his front yard, down the street somewhere in Canonsburg and even at Quest, he just can't wrestle in a league on a team$ unless he followed the league's rules.
I think I can prove I can swim in the pool and follow every rule. Now I am a resident because I moved. I did swim in the Washington pool when I lived there. Why swim there now? when I can follow the rules just as well in my new home town Canons-burgh in town park pool.I can swim in my back yard or in the neighbor's pool but I prefer to use the facility in my new district, why, Because I live there .I bought a new house and now pay my taxes to the district . Not.Washington . I don't know maybe I liked the town-park pool better that's why I moved . I f I have to go in front of a board to prove it so be it!Ii I promise I won't splash or run if they are the rules. any way I heard town park has a better atmosphere that I prefer.
You can go to town park and swim but you will need to go in front of the board to be on the swim team. The Swim League rules go beyond the district where you pay taxes. It encompasses many districts. Good luck and welcome - FYI it is "Canonsburg". You might need to know this in cases you have to mail anything.
In any other sport athletic intent is difficult to prove...in this case it is impossible. Cody was already a state champ and would be again if he stayed at charleroi. He does not benefit, at all, by the transfer...in fact some might say that he will find much stiffer competition wrestling in AAA. Wrestling is an individual sport...when he steps on the mat the color of his singlet and which school is scribbled on it has nothing to do with who wins. Leave the family alone. The acedemics at Canon Mcmillan are much better than Charleroi...that is a fact that can't be argued!!!!
According to schooldigger.com Charleroi Area High School ranks 158th while Canon McMillan High School ranks 246th in Pennsylvania. Also, wrestling is a team sport, hence the PIAA Team Wrestling Championship. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Wrestling a team sport?!?!? Are you kidding me, really?!?!?!?!?
And the same schooldigger.com, whoever they are? ranks CM 27 and Charleroi 373 out of 543 PA schools. CM enrollment has grown 55% over the last 20 years where Charleroi has dropped 20%. Not bashing Charleroi, but where do you think your kid would have more opportunity? Also, colleges don't give scholarships to teams ONLY individuals.
If a kid changes school districts because he thinks he has a better shot at a wrestling scholarship that's athletic intent.
Cody would have gotten a scholarship whether he would have stayed at Charleroi or not. Winning a state championship guarantees that.
When I mentioned "more opportunity" above I was talking primarily about academic & career opportunities because for 90% of wrestlers it ends after HS and you need to focus on your life's work.
Why are you writing as an Anon now? You use to get on us for this. Joining the club now until after the 17th?
...if there is a an admission fee for the hearing or the new pool, the old man will be in trouble. Keep the side doors locked...not so sneaky.
...good riddance!
All of you anon posters need to get a life, remember you are talking about a 16-year old kid.
If the Weircoch's lose the hearing, will Cody have to give his t-shirt back? Amen.
Sept 29 3:08 - what I read is the move and other bad behavior point more towards the dad not the kid. The kid does not pull the strings in a family, the parents do. What is amazing is the controversy surrounding the family vs other wrestlers and their families who have moved into the area. It is not the first time this has happen. There was news on those moves but not 250 plus comments that just goes on and on. I can't wait until there is a ruling so everybody can move on to another subject. This guy must be a something else to deal with so good luck Canon Mac
Academically motivated hmmm interesting ... yea, I'm not buying; from what I hear the parents should have just simply followed the rules and been a little less publically vocal concerning their true intent, but they can try to sell it to the WPIAL; probably more gullible than joe's following. EW, why even post as anonymous.
I hear CM has a housing area being built for next year's incoming transfers; wrestling mat where the pool usually goes, although the mat will be used exclusively for the study sessions in supporting the athletic intent theory... books, pencils, the whole nine yards.
11:12. Agree 100%. Heard the same thing. I heard Charlerio has a larger paper and conversation trail than Mt Lebanon did with Brownlee. Sounds like it is going to be Brownlee II all over again with a sit out year. This one has 4 to 5 times the publicity surrounding it. Brownlee's case was pretty public too. I'd be shocked if he was allowed to wrestle this year. Academic move - not buying it either. Personally, hope he is able to wrestle this year but don't see how that could happen.
If the guy is so bad,why is everyone complaining then. the people from Charleroi should all be happy and glad to see the family move.Either way Canon Mac will wrestle and will have an outstanding year with or with out.So all you haters settle down now and try to get your program back to respectability and quit being so damn jealous . My goodness walking around with all that hate all day must be tough. Especially for a 16 year old kid. Wow!! what a shame, no wonder the country is in the shape it's in .
It would be a shame if the child were punished, because of an overzealous parent who panicked. Had he stayed in Charleroi, he would have dominated the AA ranks, as a three-time state champion. I hear he is a good kid, and I am sure that he will excel in AAA after sitting out a year.
I wouldn't be so quick to point at certain schools, comments my be coming from your own backyard. I am personally tired of seeing our own kids taking a backseat to recruits being brought into CM for puerly athletic intent. Sometimes there's more to it than winning titles. If they packed up and went bcak home; no tears lost here. I can't succumb to the come one; come all theory.
EW, maybe its not the Charleroi folks who are complaining, hmmmmm.
Sept 30 10:51. Right On Brother. Sick of it too. Many people are.
A certain poster keeps citing Canon-Mac's academic prowess and a ranking of 27 in a some qualitative school district ranking, as justification for the move. Those same rankings list South Fayette School District as #3. Given the search for academic excellence, why wouldn't a parent chose the #3 ranked district in the state. Hypothetically speaking of course. Also, Upper St Clair, Peters Township, Pine-Richland, North Allegheny, Mt Lebanon, and even Bethel Park were ranked, academically speaking, ahead of the CM school district.
Two PIAA state champions out this year because of athletically motivated move. Zain Retherford and now Cody Weirchioch. Do what Chishko's and Macri's did and move before you get in high school.
He probably deserved it!
I hear EW had a stellar wrestling career. Career 0-0 which makes wonder about the empathetic comments posted about wrestlers having heart and perserverance.

I wonder if those higher tax rates in Canonsburg will bring him a better scholarship. I though he was already a shoe in at Penn State? I do believe his family stated in one of their posts that he was an honar student. Sounds like he already had everything he needed in Charleroi. Hence atheletic motivation.
Haters will hate. People are just mad because CM is a power house in wrestling and always has been since wrestling has been around. Cody is a good wrestler and wants to have the best training. Charleroi can't even get 10 kids out for their team. All you haters are just mad cause he didn't pick your school. He picked one of the best wrestling schools ever in Pa. After Cody graduates CM will still produce and still be one of the best because of our Midget program,Junior High program and the backing from the town. That is the truth.
To the deleted post: If you are going to make accusations like that, I expect you to back them up with facts, names, etc.
Be careful truth aka EW looks like you a admitting it was atletic intent.
"Cody is a good wrestler and wants to have the best training. Charleroi can't even get 10 kids out for their team. All you haters are just mad cause he didn't pick your school. He picked one of the best wrestling schools ever in Pa." Let met get this straight. Nary a mention of athletics. I can't believe an adult was foolish enough to state this publicly two weeks before a hearing. An unwise, impulsive, and angry post, if ever one existed.
The Weircioch Case is garnering nationwide attention...

The sad thing is athletics is being put ahead of academics... yes my kid is getting a wrestling scholarship..but guess what people D1 teams have9.9 scholarship available...so it's not about the college perks but more like the high school perks. Shame on you. Whatever happened to school loyalty????
Transfers have happened in the past and will continue to happens unless THE WPIAL BOARD steps up to Canon Mac to penalize their recruits. While they're sitting on their high thrones they should place pcc, ssa,and hemp/gcc into a separate league with beth catholic and lasalle college from out east.
Agreed, SSA wrestles AA and has their pick of the litter. Not fair CM just blantantly abusing the system when other schools are playing by the rules. It's not so much that people are "haters" it's more that some see the obvious and call it like they see it. CW parents took him to CM to wrestle and he is glad to be wrestling here.Fact! We have a great wrestling program. Fact! Athletic intent. Nope, Don't try to sell this, our academics aren't that great. I don't have a horse in this race, but I'm also not blind. Atletic intent, Definitley! The parents are driving this bus and hopefully the kid doesn't have to pay for their arrogance.
Interesting article in Monday's Tribune Review about a transfer. The football transfer was denied because the family could not prove there was no athletic intent. Based upon many responses in this post, nobody can claim that this tranfer had zero athletic intent.

More discussion on the Weircioch hearing...
If the parents' move was for academic intent, why haven't they been criticizing the school's academic programs and wrote letters concerned with which teachers were being hired? I only see comments about not having a coach, wrestling numbers, and fans which are all stricly athletic issues. I was told the previous school hired a coach and the wrestling numbers are expected to be better than previous years with some potential state qualifiers on the roster, although this doesn't matter because the move was for academic intent. Please strike the athletic comments.
I think everyone is just haters adn jealous. CM will dominate this year and we'll be on the lookout fo rthe recruitin class of 2013, 2014, 2015.
This will ultimately be decided by the PIAA. The WPIAL is often over ruled...
