Retherford gets new hearing

From Jeremy Elliot of the Harrisburg Patriot-News

The waiting game continues for standout high school wrestler Zain Retherford.

During the off-season, Retherford transferred from Line Mountain to Benton High School, citing family reasons and bullying for the move. District 4 unanimously voted to declare Retherford ineligible for the upcoming season, stating it was a transfer for the benefit of athletics.

In Thursday’s appeal to the PIAA, the board of appeals was forced to remand the case back to District 4 after district officials failed to adhere to policies concerning sequestering parties during testimony.

“There was a fundamental process flaw, and this is not an issue we want submitted to an appeal court,” PIAA Director of Legal Affairs Michael Solomon, Esquire, said. “Our goal is to get it right the first time.

“There was a hiccup in the process, and it was strong enough that it has to be reheard at the district level. This gives both parties a chance to restate their case.”

The old transcript will be thrown out and Retherford, his parents, Benton and Line Mountain officials will argue their cases from scratch and go through the process a second time.

Precedent has been estalished in the Wiercioch case; there should be no future complaints about tranfers involving athletic intent. PIAA is wasting everyone's time; bullying is a problem a legitimate reason to transfer. It's not fair to deny some and allow others just because an attorney presents a better argument. In fact why not just allow transfers for athletic intent and quit wasting everyone's time.

Now everyone is allowed to recruit and transfer anywhere they please, who will be the biggest pickups for teams next year? Whoever has the deepest pockets and most influence will prevail. Just like college sports, the richest donors will get the best recruits. As long as public schools can keep pace with the catholic schools, I see this as leveling the playing field.

Unless I'm from another planet, bullying isn't restricted to beating someone up. If you "wreck" someone these days you are suspended and parents are fined. Kids are bullied for race, physical disablilities, sexual preference, etc.; going to school isn't about being the toughest kid in school. SOme kids go to school to learn i.e. this is "academic intent" studying hard to position yourself for a better life. DOn't everyone is treated equally in school.

I heard Coca-Cols has a new concept for a commercial. A kid wearing a Joe Green shirt asks Green for an autograph, instead Joe walks over, rips the kids Steeler Jersey off and returns it to Sears.

Merv Griffin? I'm not sure who that is. Must be well before my time. This kid was Brandon Griffin. Maybe he is a relative of Merv. Point being, he appeared much stronger than Wiercioch in dominating win at Super 32. From what I know of Wiercioch, he is excellent, but not at his best at that weight class according to the video. As a huge CM, I am concerned.

UP Front; I'm no genius either, but don't the age group match-ups end after grade school or am I mistaken? I guess you can play the age card until your son is a senior then it will become a mute point. Most Seniors are 18 or 19"almost 19" is that actually 18 and isn't 15 "almost 16". They were were both in high school but we could post birthdays if that would help you out. Don't start down playing TM beating CW, twice. Now you're taking shots at out state champ.

1:57pm . Spin it anyway you want any one under 18 is still a minor. I think that's why we have laws. 15 is different than 19 , boy ,man . If it was the other way around you would be saying , no wonder he beat him he;s 4 years older. Like it or not age makes a big difference in most cases. It makes a huge difference in the upper weights .

Those Hershey cops are never around when you need them. This is this first time I've heard anyone refer to laws against minors pertaining to a wrestling match against two high school wrestlers; I think you should have promptly and sternly removed Travis's T-shirt and returned it being that he acually broke the law on three seperate occasions. wow!

Wow! Lots of childish, petty bickering on here. What's done is done. Let's move on. Nov. 23, 8:57 says "cody was giving up at least 15 pounds in that match." Just wondering why on earth anyone would do such a thing. Marstellar was at 160, not sure he'll be able to hold it all season. Tough road ahead for Wierchioch @ 182 (IMHO). If Wierchioch goes 170 he's got an excellent shot at a AAA PIAA title. Marstellar vs Wierchioch @ 170 would be very interesting. Would've liked to see the preview @ Super 32. Should be an entertaining season for the fans. Good luck to ALL local wrestlers this season.

To the post who has a vested interest in the wiercoch kid. I would respect just saying the kid got beat, but throwing in the age thing is a bit of stretch especially after the ink he got winning it as a freshman. Everyone on here knows wrestling and I've never heard complaints of age as an excuse for losing a match at the high school ranks. For record I am from closer than you may think and been around this game a very long time. Not fair taking away from what the McKillop boy accomplished; he beat an excellent wrestler twice to win states, which very tough for anyone who knows this sport. Just an opinion.

I normally won't comment in here, but when I see someone attributing a high school loss to age difference of two high school wrestlers, I have to point out the obvious. When you wrestle in high school J.O.s are over; there are no age brackets in high school. As a freshman age is against you; as a Senior it's on your side. Maybe you can push to have the kid's state title stripped and given to your kid basis of age. Now I remember why I don't frequent this blog.
