Another outbreak

South Park had to cancel its dual meet against Washington Wednesday night and shut down the wrestling program after an outbreak of "Mat Herpes." Connellsville, Pine-Richland and two other schools that have not been identified have had problems with it this season. It's not about to go away. The big fear in wrestling circles is that an outbreak might hit a program at the end of the season or during the postseason. There would be little, if anything, the WPIAL or PIAA could do if that happens.

Rumor has it that the UPMC recommended the suspension of all wrestling in the WPIAL for the next 2 weeks to "deal" with the situation. My sources say Frank Volcano lead the charge against suspending wrestling because of the Poweraide tournament.

There will be no shutdown of the WPIAL but it was discussed. I am working on a story about that issue and how mat herpes is affecting the sport this season. Stay tuned.
