Catalano beats state champ
Nick Catalano, a 130-pound sophomore at Canon-McMillan, pulled off the upset of the first round of the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships when he defeated Cort Choate, a defending state champion from Blue Mountain, Thursday.
Catalano stopped choate, 4-2 in overtime, avenging a 1-0 loss to Choate in the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan in December. The bout was scoreless until the third period when Choate escaped. It was tied with 19 seconds remaining when Choate was called for his second stalling call, giving Catalano a penalty point.
The turning point came in the second overtime, when Catalano got a penalty point and reversal.
"This is the biggest win of my high school career," said Catalano.
