Tri-County Wrestling Tournament
The Tri-CADA TRi-County Wrestling Tournament will be held this weekend at Charleroi High School. Seven wrestlers who won titles last season are expected to return, including Nate Gaffney, a defending state champion from Connellsville.
Wrestling begins 4:30 p.m. on Friday and semifinals are 10 a.m. Saturday. Finals are 6 p.m. that night.
Twenty-one teams from the three county area will be competing, including Connellsville, last year's team champion. Waynesburg was second and Canon-McMillan third.
Freshman sensation Cody Wiercioch of Charleroi will compete at 152 pounds.
Westmoreland County tournament
It was a mess at last weekend's Westmoreland County Wrestling Tournament. The first night was washed out because of inclement weather but tournament officials decided to run the entire tournament on Saturday.
The finals, which were set for 7 p.m., did not begin until 9:40 p.m. and did not finish until 12:15 a.m., Sunday. Because of a five-bout limit for any wrestler in one day, some consolation finals were awarded on a point system.
Franklin Regional junior Nico Megaludis and Derry junior Travis Shaffer each won their third title in this tournament.
Sherlock lost for season
Sam Sherlock, a defending state champion from West Mifflin, was lost for the season with a knee injury sustained in the Beast of the East Tournament. Sherlock, wrestling in the 130-pound finals, tore his ACL in the December tournament.
