Alignment changes

The WPIAL has released its wrestling alignment for next season and the most significant part of it locally is the separation of
Trinity and Canon-McMillan. The two teams will be in the same section, 4, but in different subsections. C-M will be in Section 4A and Trinity in 4B.

The two teams can continue to wrestle but the dual meet would not count as a section match. It's also possible they could meet in the Section Tournament.

Waynesburg Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township are in the Trinity subsection. C-M has Chartiers Valley, Moon, Montour, Upper St. Clair and West Allegheny.

The WPIAL cut Class AAA down to four sections and will revamp the qualifiers for the WPIAL Team Tournament. The top two teams from each subsection still make it but the two third-place teams in each subsection wrestle for a fifth qualifier to the team tournament. That makes five qualifiers from each section to form a 20-team tournament.

In the individual postseason, the WPIAL will allow five qualifiers from each of the four section to advance to the WPIAL Championships in Class AAA. The top three from that tournament move on to the state tournament in Hershey.

Read more about the changes in Wednesday's O-R.

Joe, those items have been discussed, but are not definite at this point. Four teams from four sections make for a perfect, 16-team bracket. It would also make possible a two-day WPIAL Team Tournament.

Four individuals from four sections make for a perfect 16-man bracket for WPIAL individuals. What a cleaner, more streamlined event that would be...

There are WPIAL committee meetings every week, starting this Thursday. We'll see what final decisions come out of those meetings.

All I can say is that the if the WPIAL DOESNT take the 3rd place team from each section the best teams wont make the tournament in section 2. How in the world can they put FC, Burgettstown and CH in the same sub and leave just South Side on the other side? This is as lopsided as it can be

We need the 4th place finisher back, to qualify for AAA states. The SE region is the weakest region but gets the 4th place qualifier. If this isn't going to happen because of the population differences, between the two regions. I suggest that each AAA region (5) takes the top 4 to states per region. That makes 20 per weight class at hershey, to even out the bracket give each regional champ a bye in the first round of the state tournament. Seed the champs and on we go. I am not for watering down the state tournament, a 20 man bracket will be enough for AAA, keep AA at 16 per weight.

Did everyone hear that Drew Headlee (waynesburg/pitt) wrestled Coleman Scott (waynesburg/okie state) in the opening round of an international tournament held in Turkey? What are the odds of two guys from the same high school wrestling in the opening round of that kind of tourney. Headlee won by the way (kind of an upset)

Yes, that did happen and I will have a story on that, and the other achievements of Waynesburg University, in Friday's paper.
