Wiercioch, Carr win
HERSHEY – Charleroi freshman sensation Cody Wiercioch capped a magical run through the 152-pound weight class of the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships Saturday with an 8-3 victory over Kyle Dehaut of Bethlehem Catholic in the finals.
South Fayette’s Nick Carr was the other area winner, taking the 145-pound weight class with a 6-3 decision over Jordan Moss of Sharon.
Wiercioch became the first freshman middleweight to win a gold medal since Terry Williams of Bald Eagle-Nittany won at 155 pounds in the 1977 Class AA championships at Rec Hall in Penn State.
Wiercioch and Carr each became the first state champion from their respective schools. Mark McKnight, who attended South Fayette, won a state title in 2003 while wrestling for Chartiers Valley in a co-op agreement.

CW is the man or should I say kid or whatever geez he is 14 and won a state title. how can he not win three more my god he is only going to get better.
That is the test now.
Can he continue to improve and keep that fire burning!
IT IS THE YEAR OF THE DRAGO!
What happened to Beattie? No butt kissing for me.
Cw is a honor student and a year round wrestler. Going to get better. Bare none the most stupid question that has been asked.
Not a stupid question. I have seen many wrestlers "peak out".
Peak out this kid has only 5 years wrestling experience. Haters. Come on, stand in front of his ol'man and say that. The desire in CW can not be measured. You don't know CW like we do. QUEST.. His second home. Negative comments, one day after states. gump.. you must hate your life to.
he's not gauranteed to be a state champ for the next 3 years of his high school career.. for example, look at Frank Martellotti...won his title freshman year and hasn't been at the top of the podium since.
Nobody here said CW would be a 4 timer. I hope CW does not go on this site. I just can't believe the negative (sh!#) about this 14 year old. But this is are society, SAD. Martellotti's sucess came by the way of working out with the best his freshman year. He was seen less and less every year after in the Quest room. FACT. As a friend of Cw's family I would ask Joe Tuscano to shut this down.
WOW there wasnt even anything negative said, they just said it would be a test for him to keep up to the very high standard that has been set for the next 3 years, chill out
What negative comment did I make? I was defending the guy's question about improving.
Here is what people may be over looking when discussing CW. First off all the guys he wrestled "grew" into 152lbs from their freshman year on thru to their sophmore and junior year and even some seniors CW wrestled this year. CW is starting off his freshman year at 152. He is a big kid for 152lbs and the fact he is 14 just blows you away. People forget all the guys he wrestled were 119 or 126 when they were 14. CW will grow he is only 14 so he is going to grow and when he does it will be a real nice progression for him. 160 next year maybe? 171 the following and maybe even 189 by the time he is a senior? Can you imagine CW at 189? Oh my lordie he would just romp on people. Anyway tootles until next time CW fans.
Being a Penn State fan. I recently read the Center Daily.com, article wrestling riches Sanderson was very impressed by the under-classmen of PA. Was quoted to say that he and his staff mentioned Cody Wiercioch as a future interest.
why no love for the freshman from cm who won a aaa title?
Because he is not from the Magic City. CM wrestling is used to having success at Hershey, Charleroi fans had to put the Giant Center in their Garmins to find it. We don't even mention Megaludis, Guibillon or Cunningham. Just CW. He would probably be better served moving to a district that understands success.
Charleroi knows and understands success. Thats a slap at Charleroi. As far as CW on Penn State radar CW is on everybodys radar. CM freshman who won title is on everybodys radar as well.
Why no Schram, how many seniors did he wrestle, CW wrestled 31 seniors (MEN) out of 39 matches.
Yes, that was a slap at Charleroi. And, no, they don't understand success. They never have. I wish CW the best in his future, he seems to understand. His fans, on the other hand, need to back off of him a little bit.
Truth - Do not down play the accomplishment of a state title by saying he didn't wrestle that many seniors. A state title is an amazing acomplishment, one I am sure you probably never came anywhere close to, and before you ask, no I haven't either, but I am not the one making idiotic statements like how many seniors a guy wrestles.
Drago should lift and get big. 171 next year and 189 his JR and Senior year then 184 in College.
I agree get big but still remain as flexable as he is now. He ran up the wall in my wrestling room and did a back flip. His dad turned grey real quick.
Big Ed is a great dad and does a good job with CW. I'll have to check out his grey next time i see him.
A interesting fact about Kolat. He was 16 as a freshman and once he became a senior there was concerns about age and eligability. The momentom and sucess was all ready established so it was over looked.
Glad to see we have been researching Kolat to try and find answers to his dominance. Cary's age was never an issue. He was 18 when he graduated. You were probably not around to appreciate what he did on the mat but those of us that were would appreciate you not trying to downplay his accomplishments. Jeff Morgan used to have a movie screen set up in the auditorium to broadcast the dual meets becuase there was no more room left in the gym. Fans from all over the state used to go to little Jeff Morgan to watch him. He is the best thing that ever happened to wrestling in this area. ONE of his matches at Hershey went the entire 6 minutes...ONE! and that was the first one he wrestled his freshman year. 10 full matches in four years! everyone else pinned or teched. Get your mind behind backing you current wrestlers instead of trying to compare them to legends. Or, worse yet, trying to degrade a legend.
how is wrestling at jefferson morgan now? and also since kolat graduated. i think they are pretty bad.
I am pretty sure they had a couple state champs after he graduated. (Tracanna/Makel). They had a runner-up at 189 a few years ago (Virgili). Or are we talking about the everworthless team tournament?
They also had another state runner up in 2004 Arron Jennings, and Brian Scritchfeild was 3rd in 2008. But yes this years team vastly underperformed, they had many PJW state place winners and qualifiers. and none of them ever made high school states.
