Notes
This weekend, the Westmoreland County Coaches Wrestling Tournament is the place to be if you want to see one of the best bouts of the season. The event, which will be held at Franklin Regional High School today and tomorrow, should have a showdown between two two-time PIAA champions - Nico Megaludis of Franklin Regional and Jimmy Gulibon of Derry - in the 125-pound finals.
The two wrestlers are expected to be weighed in at 125 and meet in the finals. The matchup was made possible because Gulibon, who has wrestled this season at 119, is having trouble holding his weight. So he's up to 125 for this tournament. He still plans to compete at 119 for the individual tournaments.
Each wrestler is ranked No. 1 in the country, state and WPIAL in their respective weight classes. Megaludis, a senior, is 22-0 this season, 141-1 in his career and has won 107 bouts in a row. He also is one of just three wrestlers to win four Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournaments.
Gulibon, a junior, is 13-0 this season, 88-2 in his career.
As an added way to rachet up anticipation, the bout was moved to the last final of the night.
Wiercioch-McKillop: Almost lost in the Powerade finals was the match between Charleroi's Cody Wiercioch and Burrell's Travis McKillop. These two banged head three times last year and will probably do it again this year. Their four-bout series is tied 2-2 and I imagine if they wrestled 50 times, it would be evenly split.
During the last match, it was Wierciochwho made the critical mistake, penalized a point for fleeing the mat. McKillop won a one-point victory. The loss will serve as motivation for Wiercioch.
Trinity update: Trinity postponed its dual meet against Mt. Lebanon Wednesday as its wrestlers recover from a skin problem that forced the Hillers out of the Powerade tournament. Trinity expects to be back in action this weekend, when the Hillers are scheduled to compete in the Kittanning Duals.
The match against Mt. Lebanon was moved to Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Tri-County Tournament: The Tri-County Athletic Directors Association Wrestling Tournament will take place next weekend at Charleroi High School. Teams from the three-county area will participate.
Make sure you know of one change. The finals were switched to 1:30 p.m. Saturday because of the Steelers game.
