Wiercioch denied

With an 8-6 vote, the WPIAL Board of Control denied the transfer of former state wrestling champion Cody Wiercioch from Charleroi to Canon-McMillan. Board members are not permitted to comment on personnel matters.
Wiercioch is expected to appeal to the PIAA Board of Control, which would require the family and school administration to attend a meeting in Harrisburg.
The Wiercioch family declined to comment.
Wiercioch captured a Class AA state title as a freshman and was runnerup as a sophomore.

What a shame. Nobody wins. The state will overturn this seeing that it was 8-6 in the district.

"Go, Go, Charleroi"...Hardly, We lost a great wrestler in Cody, and, certainly we hold no ill-will toward the polite, talented wrestler. He will have a long and decorated wrestling career wherever he may grapple. Certainly, he would be welcomed back into the fold, if possible.
That said, according to the WPIAL board decided this relocation was an impetuous decision, with at the very least, some athletic intent, and I tend to agree.

the piaa will hold a hearing de novo, from the beginning. anything that the wiercioch may have said at the wpial hearing can be left out by them, and their attorney, who, almost certainly will accompany them to mechanicsburg. this denial will be overturned. you can nearly bet the ranch.

11:09 - I wrote that - I am really in shock. It is too bad - I fill sorry for the kid, he is a great wrestler. I can't believe it. With schools having to be in same leagues with Catholic Schools who absolutely recruit, it is just too hard for me to believe they would vote this way. There still might be some hope - I hope.

11:09: I have not read one disparaging comment about the kid. Nobody has made a single negative comment regarding Cody's character and there have been 100's of posts regarding the transfer. In retrospect, it was the wrong decision by his parents or whomever initiated this transfer. Unfortunately, he will have to pay the price for an adult's decision to transfer.

this didn't work for josh dezewia from counsil rock after he moved from pennsbury. Josh had to sit out his junior year because of athletic intent, he then won a state title in 2010 for the "rock".

edgar snyder would probably ask the parents "what the heck are you doing?" Anyway, didn't the parents move to CM for better academics for their children, they should be content with the enhanced educational opportunities available at their new location, wrestling should be a mute point; sounds like we're putting athletic intent ahead of academics again; wasn't that the whole reasson this transfer was denied? Maybe the vote was "spot on" or the 6 wanted another state title.

sorry, i don't care if they did talk about athletics. if the family bought a house in the district (or rented one), moved into it, changed their legal and actual address, registered to vote there, etc..., the kid wrestles if he wants to.

Sorry your mistaken. PIAA has been taken to court 12 times over cases they have denied an athlete. The PIAA won all 12 times. The latest wrestler to take them to court. Josh Dziewa.

Josh's parents got a divorce, and dad bought a new house in a new district. Josh moved in with his dad. District 1 shot him down, and so did the PIAA. Mr. Dziewa took them to court. The judge ruled quickly that athletics are not a constutional right.

The PIAA sees over 30 cases a year, and denies about half of them. They usually rule with the WPIAL though.

I am happy for Cody, given the difficulty of adjusting to rigors of academia at Canon-Mac versus Charleroi. Cody now has a full year to adjust to academic demands of Canon Mac without concerning himself with wrestling. Congratulations Cody. Great decision WPIAL. I am sure the parents are relieved since this move was driven solely by academic intentions. Every should be happy with the decision.

There is alot more to this story that has not been told. If he would have just moved he would have been eligable. The fact is if you are a wrestlong fan. You would understand what Charleroi had to do. As far as the other recruits. They moved before they where in high school.

I don't understand why these athletes are moving in the middle of their highschool career. We know it is for athletics, but why in the middle of their career. I can understand 6, 7, and maybe even 8th grade. 11th?

Schools like Charleroi have to at least contest it. If every stud at every small school left, what would happen eventually with those 80+ programs. They would be dropped eventually. Is that what we want in PA, less wrestling schools?

If you want to go somewhere for academics, go prep. That is the best out there. I'm sure Cody wouldn't have any problem getting a scholarship to go prep if they started the process late spring, early summer.

Its entertaining reading comments concerning the noble and concerned parents and the questions of why this case has been singled out and denied, this shows some of you have absolutely no idea what has transpired long before and in the midst of this trnasfer. you are blogging about blogs. Maybe the parents were a little too arrogant and flagrant in there intent and attempts to use everyone for their own goals. It shame society doesn't cater to the NHS students as they do to accomodate a wrestler or football player, but here we go again talking about wrestling and recruits when it has been clearly defended this was a soley academic trnasfer; no athletic intent whatsoever, although they also flip flopped on their intention if you scroll back through these blogs or you actually know.

The real loser here is the kid. Seems to me that the WIPAL is mighty hypocritical here ( as well as lot of posters.)
1) everyone rails about "transfers"; how unfair, how unjust, etc.
2) however, the WPIAL in its wisdom allows schools that OPENLY recruit to compete against everyone else. They are the catholic/ private school; in wresting the most notable are PCC with coach Abe and SAA. Do you think anyone one of those kids that helped PCC to its very high state final finish last year even live anywhere near Oakland?
Where was everyone on here when PCC had Jason Luster transfer in last year? Why no outcry then? It was his 4th school in 4 years and he was Nat Prep champ the year before! Why did the WPIAL allow it? Why did they allow it and then come out full guns against this kid whose family had moved! Just because its CM? Would Charlori have signed off on a transfer to Ringgold?

Its fine and good to spout off about the rules, in fact they are a good thing, IF they are just and followed equally. But why allow one class of school for whom recruiting is the way of life to compete with another group who are so tied up against transfers that even a high profile kid whose family moves is punished for the fact?

There is a lot going on here: anger, resentment, spite. Lots of emotions being directed against the "have" team by the "have not" teams, lots of ill will, etc. And that, unfortunately, is life.

With all this, however, please don't hide behind the rules. They are as fallen and deceitful and flawed as anything that's a part of this mess. It will never change until the governing body is actually fair in their implementation and makes a system that is fair. Until then they will be used as veil to execute vendettas, whims, and to get even through.
Oh, by the way. Remember the kid in all this too. Sorry he had be part of all this mess.

FIX yourself WPIAL, this is ultimately on your hands as long as you continue to foster an unfair playing field and then arbitrarily decide who can compete and who can not, based on the hoots and hollers of the masses and the application of rules as you see fit from case to case.

I agree the system is flawed, I don't think anybody can argue that.

The majority definitely think something has to be in place. We can't have open transfers. That is not good for the sport at all.

The people that are so fired up on here about the rules and a kid being put through this, my question is this?

Before this hearing took place, what have you done to change the rules? The people on the district committees, and the PIAA board are very approachable by phone, letters, emails.

Luster came from a non-PIAA school, he did not need to obtain a waiver from Kiski. Before that, he wrestled out of state, which also does not require a waiver.

It's not the powers who be in the PIAA single out kids. If the kid's former school signs off, the matter never comes before the district or the state. Most schools sign off without a second thought others don't. That's why kids seem to be randomly accused of transfering for athletic intent. In Wiercioch's case you had a state champion transfering to a state championship team. His parents had to figure that was going to raise some red flags. It just seemed too coincidental.

Unless there is some really stong evidence in written form, such a letters and or e-mails, in which the parents have threatend to leave Charleroi if there were not changes to the wrestling program, there is no way the PIAA will stop him from wrestling for CM. Given that the vote was so close at the district level, I doubt there is strong documented evidence of athletic intent. Charleroi's burden of proof will be much higher at the state level.

- The wrestler has to pay the price for the action of the parents if it's denied by PIAA; they've been around this long enough to know the rules-end of story.
I don't think its ironic. (1)Anyone can wrestle for Quest School of Wrestling if mom and dad forks out the fee and they can keep up to the level of training. (2)The duals was a good pre-Super32for any wrestler entered in this tournmaent. (3)Quest is in Canon Mac's backyard and I believe its geographically the closet supplemental training program to Charleroi. There are kids from many schools; some even come from WV or Ohio for the level of talent in the room. Despite some opinion, the are some talented wrestlers still at Charleroi and they're probably still friends with thier old teammate. Kids adapt better than the old folks...

It's not the fact that the family left Charleroi, it's the manner of how it was done. When a family tries to wreck a program (example: writing letters to coaches looking for a job at charleroi) on the way out it had to be done. If they just left and not try causing fireworks on the way out it would of been over with and he would be in the mighty big mac singlet.

No, it is Charleori following the rules. They think it is for athletic intent, so they contest it.

It is up to the WPIAL Board to decide if it was or was not.

There are roughly 40-50 cases per year across the state in all sports that a district committee has to review. 30+ get appealed to the PIAA. 12 have made it to court. PIAA has won all 12.

My numbers may be low.

Don't act like Charleroi is the only district ever to contest a transfer.

Charleroi folks did not hate them, and what ED did to us on his departure did raise some tempers. He left for his son's wrestling, which is understandable. But ED slandered and tried ruining it for the people who remain here, we did not fire the first shot and the sly and disrespectful man kept it secret. We were never negative or hateful towards them, and we really aren't now. All we want is justice for what the family has committed to us. This site shows alot of one sided stories and no one knowing really what happened. We expected the move for years, when it happened the school district and team didn't mind it all too much. (While still a cougar) ED fought to end the program and merge with another school so his son can have a good practice partner, we got a little upset, we didn't mind it to much. Then we heard he moved after his plan for merge fell through, We said goodbye, no hard feelings. While interviews for head coach were being held, ED showed his face there. While there he got a potential coaches email and sent an email slandering the district, the school's faculty, and the KIDS ON THE TEAM. That's right, a 40+ y/o man, bad mouthing high school athletes that have worked tremendously hard to be where they are at, obviously the are no cody but they are still pretty damn good. Us alumni and the parents know this was unnecessary and when someone who left had to make a last stand for no reason, we get upset. You just don't slander high school athletes, they are kids the same age as your son. It's ashame Cody lost from his dad's mistakes. His dad needs punished, they should let cody wrestle and have his dad be no where on the school grounds when it happens, because we all know, his dad gets off on his childs life and if he can't be there it will be pure punishment for this man.

Soundless a lot like trying to get even with Mr. W. to me....

Now, I realize that the administration of Charleori made the call, not this necessarily this poster, but the question remains: did their questioning of the move, their choice to raise the red flag, come as a result of these affronts?

To put it another way: was the questioning of the move based on purely athletic intent, no matter how the family acted? Or was the use of "athletic intent" based on how the family acted?

To put it a third way, does the district rule all athletes who leave as leaving for athletic intent, or only the ones who burn all bridges and offend everyone they leave behind?

Seems very clear in this post (and in may others) that the "rules" were used as a stick to punish Mr.W for these said affronts and may not have been used if these affronts did not happen,IE: if the family had exited quietly.

Yes, the rules are the rules, but the reason they were used is what is in question here: seems from all the world that Charleori wanted to get even. Sorry, but based on this post and many others saying "you all don't know what went on here".

As bad as that might have been,as hurtful and damaging it was, was it still really the right thing to do?

Do two wrongs, really make a right?

Does hurting back tack away the hurt already suffered?

Does the son have to suffer from the sins of the father? Even the poster quoted above said:

"they should let cody wrestle and have his dad be no where on the school grounds when it happens"

Only those that made the decision can answer this, and only they have to live with themselves, but to an outside observer's humble opinion: Well guys good job, you got even. Was it worth it?

Charleroi didn't break any rules. They felt the move was for primarily athletic intentions. so they contested the move, and the WPIAL agreed by a majority vote. The student/athlete's intentions violated the letter and spirit of the rule and denied eligibility for one year. He has the right to an appeal.

I can't see how anyone can construe that scenario as two wrongs. One wrong makes it wrong and the WPIAL agreed.

EW did wrong; broke the rules; and boasted about it until he realized it may go south. He had no reason to interfere with the hiring of a coach and go out of his way disrupt people just doing the right thing for their school, town, program, and kids. There was an annual announcement of the family moving to CM to wrestle. Some people want the facts then don't want to accept them. Cody is a great wrestler and will turn out fine no matter what. Dad should do a reality check.
