Team tournament notes
The seeding for the WPIAL Team Tournament was released today and there were not many surprises. In Class AAA, Connellsville got the top seed, followed by Canon-McMillan, Penn Trafford and Kiski. The only surprise there was Penn Trafford's win over Kiski in the Section 1 finals. I didn't have the Warriors ranked and it's surprising they beat Kiski.
Canon-McMillan is the second seed and might have Michael Hull back in time for the first round. He missed the Section 5 tournament because he was in Florida preparing for an international football All-Star game. The Big Macs should reach the finals against Connesllville.
Burgettstown shook up Class AA by beating previously undefeated Chartiers-Houston in the Section 1 finals. That put the Bucs in the upper bracket with Burrell and Yough. Burgettstown and Shady Side Academy are in the bottom bracket. Shady Side forfeited three weight classes against Burrell in the Section 3 finals. Yikes. Burrell should win this but I am less sure today than I was at the beginning of the season.
I had to smile at Joe Throckmorton's comment about Pittsburgh Central Catholic after Waynesburg lost in the Section 4 finals. "They recruited well," he said.
It was also strange to see the number of forfeits that occurred in the consolation matches. Coaches didn't seem to see a need for the bouts to be wrestled once the outcome was assured. Wonder if they thought about the fans who bought tickets to see the competition. If that's the case, why wrestle for third and fourth place?

Joe I too have witnessed the steady decline of true sportMANship in all sports programs. This generation is only individual concerned. You have to be part of a team to be a team member. Wrestling is a team sport, measured by individual effort. Great wrestling coaches understand that balance. When the parents and politics influence a program long enough the whole sport reflects the corrosion.

I agree with the coaches quote. level the playing feild by letting the public schools recruit. how can catholic and academy schools get away with it and still compete in the piaa. If a public school kid does the same thing he/she has to sit out a year. How fair is that, pcc and ssa are regional all star teams, they should dominate every sport.
I also agree, last time I went to a wrestling event or any sporting event I say the Amercian flag hanging there, freedom, to move and attend any school we wish. Better education, career choices, the best we can offer are kids. Who are wpial.piaa that say are athleats have to sit out, I bet there kids go to some sort of pay to educate school. They should dominate every sport as stated above, its like a damn draft.

private schools should compete at the highest classification in their respective sport. It is not a level playing field.
private schools should compete within their own league... to even it out, you know? that way we can't complain or be beaten by a team that has the unfair advantage to recruit athletic stars to gain the upperhand.
