Welcome to Hershey

We are 10 minutes away from the start of the state tournament. Everyone is here, including that freshman from Charleroi, and ready to go. I am always amazed at how nice the Giant Center is compared to the Hersheypark Arena, an Mansion compared to a two-story A-frame.

Thankfully, there were no scratches from the tournament this week from the area. Two wrestlers did withdrawal but not from District 7. So if you are logged in, keep this blog at your fingertips. I'll try my best to update the first round - Class AA - as soon as possible. Also, at the end of each session, I will update the resulults of local wrestlers. That entry is just below this one.

The first round was a strong one for the area as 10 remained alive after the first day. Ten of them are in the quarterfinals. The list includes Chaartiers-Houston junior Michael Innes (140), South Fayette junior Nick Carr (145), Charleroi freshman Cody Wiercioch (152), Bentworth junior Gus Mizia (152), Fort Cherry junior Sam Guidi (160), Charleroi senior Ray Campbell (215) and Beth-Center junior Jeff Tarley (Hvy).

Three wrestlers – Beth-Center's Zach Swarrow (103), and Charleroi's Aaron Toth (112) and Jake Linn (Hvy) were eliminated.

In Class AAA, six of the eight area qualifiers advanced: Canon-McMillan's Connor Schram (103), Nick Catalano (135) and Sam Lombardo (140); Waynesburg's Derrick Nelson (119) and Zach McGinnis (125) and Trinity's Kyle McWreath (189).

Nate Gaffney, a defending state champion from Connellsville, lost in the first round and forfeited out of the consolaations. Gafffney injured his knee in last week's WPIAL Championships.

The two area wrestlers who did not get out of the first day were Alex Dunaway of McGuffey (119) and neal Rands (215) of Ringgold.

Two state runners-up from last season - Mark Havers (160) of Bradford and Clint Morrison (171) of Cedar Cliff - lost in the preliminary round.
