Thanks. the list unfortunately looks pretty accurate. I say unfortunately because 8 ranked per weight, 14 weight classes, and I see one Wash Hi wrestler & no one from Trinity. Time was they would have had 10+ between them. But these are always one of the things that make the season more fun, no matter where you're from!

This is something that is fun...hey Joe anyone you've seen outside the top four in any class you see that could pull that shocking upset?

Locally, I like McGuffey's Brent Blaharczyk at 182. He always seems to wrestle well in big situations. Might need more strength.

Jake Rothka of Bentworth has been wrestling strong at 106, narrowly lost to Brendan Howard of J-M last week.

Fort Cherry's Tanner Garry will surprise some people at 195. He took last year off to play basketball. Not sure if that set him back.

Ringgold's Jacob Gerard (106) and Kenny Tarpley (126) are off to good starts. Interested to to see what they will do at Tri-CADA tournament. Jake Wisener (160) is back from an injury that cost him the postseason last year.

Also want to see Waynesburg's Eric Jones (145) and Trinity freshman Robert West (170).

I love Mcguffey's coach Jeff Breese's comment after the pounding they took against Waynesburg. " I have about 10 students behind me sitting in the bleachers who can help this team, but this sport is to hard for them, they don't want to put in the work" Welcome to this generation's work ethic, lazy, bad attitudes, coaches fault, wrestling is to hard, video games are easier.

Unfortunately, you are right. It's not just McGuffey, it's nearly every school. This is a hard sport and many athletes either can't or won't make that commitment.

Joe,

How is Brian Estep undefeated at 9-0 in your Janury 3, post, when he wrestled for 7th place in your December 30, 2011 post. If he was not in the finals and did not finish 3rd at Powerade he must have at least two losses? Are the rankings old?

One of the biggest challenges to coaches and program organizers these days in my opinion is getting young kids to come out for the sport of wrestling and then getting them to stay involved throughout the long haul. Easier said then done in these day and ages with a lot of "soft mentality" people" out there who would rather not participate then have a chance at failing. But, we cannot leave our sport in the hands of these types of people. We need to take it in our own hands and have charismatic coaches who can get the wrestlers to get hooked either through their relationship with the coaches, teammates, or the sport itself. If failure occurs here then we must get the parents hooked so that the wrestlers are made to stick it out until some level of success is found. We must also in my opinion pass on patience and how we measure success especially early in the sport...such as techniques learned as opposed to wins/ losses. There are very few and far in between wrestlers who step into the sport and win from day one and continue this throughout their career. The key is getting young wrestlers to stick it out 5 or more years and then success starts to come in the wins/ losses column. Until then we must just continue to encourage them and their parents and educate them on the many benefits they gain from the sport both on and off the mat.

Joe,

Where is Tanner Sutton? Best wrestler on a very strong CH team. Injury or not he deserves a top three ranking, don't you think?

Can't rank a kid who hasn't wrestled yet.. He had his 1st match last night.. I'm sure he'll be ranked soon.. If you follow wrestling you should know no one ranks a wrestler till they have stepped on the mat

I rank wrestlers only when they start the season. A wrestler can start the season, get hurt and still be ranked. But he has to show that he is part of the team first. Sutton will be in next week's rankings.

Demaske's record is 11-0. I'll change it.

Where is Tanner Sutton?" Why he is sitting on sidelines right now with bum shoulder/untested shoulder. Where should we rank him? First? Come on Mr. Sutton show some humility!
