C-M finds a hero

There are so few moments like these in scholastic wrestling that they just need to be remembered for a long time. Canon-McMillan needed a hero Thursday night in its semifinal match against Penn Trafford in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament and Zach Thomas stepped up.

The sophomore with a 4-10 record registered one of the most important pins in C-M wrestling history when he locked a cross-face cradle and turned PT's Matt Lago on his back in 2:21. The pin was captured by Eleanor Bailey of The Almanac for your enjoyment here.

The Big Mac coaches were just hoping Thomas wouldn't get pinned and he gave them the win that turned the dual meet into a 28-27 victory. That sent C-M into the WPIAL team finals and qualified them for the PIAA Team Tournament for the first time since 2006.

The match drew a big crowd to Charleroi, which also will be the site of the CM-Kiski finals, and brought back memories of some of the big dual meets held there when Washington and Greene counties were the powers of the WPIAL. \

In an era where forfeits and avoiding matchups are the norm for most dual meets, Thomas' win was refreshing and showed wrestling fans how unpredictable the sport can be.

It was an awesome match last night. CM will need some more heroes Saturday night...Kiski is a tough squad. Extra points will be necessary for a Big Mac victory. Who will the next hero be? Go Big Macs!!!!

Dami will get teched or pinned. If Hull wrestles CM wins if he doesn't they will lose. Connelssville win beat PT by 12. These are the best 3 teams the WPIAL has sent to the state tourny ever. they each should do very well, I think 2 out of the 3 will place in the top 4.

how will dami pin mckuchen? if he can stall his butt off he might lose by 8. Is Hull going to wrestle? Or is his back, leg, knee, ankle, thumb, neck, wrist, shoulder, hip, nose, eye, ear, teeth, finger, elbow, toe, hurt? this guy gets hurt more than anyone that i have ever heard of. He can't take the pounding of high school football, how is he going to last in div I ? He didn't wrestle his freshman and junior years because of injury, What's bothering him now?

Nothing is bothering Mike except a full ride to Penn State. A five star recruit now moved up from 4 star because of his performance in last all star game. Rated #1 inside LB in country. Expected to play as freshman letter 4 years start three years captain his senior year and a first or second round pick in NFL.

The question is what is bothering you?

In reference to anonymous Mon. 2/8 @ 2:02 PM. You Seem to be getting the cart in front of the horse here. You seem to be making a lot of projections. Anytime you sit back as to not get hurt and miss activities you could be excelling in and moreover having fun you run high the probability of getting hurt in the long run. If not getting injured is on your mind and keeping you from competing; Inevitably you(Hull) is going to get that injury that will prevent him(you){Hull} from competing in this Fairytale of a life you have projected for him(you){Hull}. With the certainty you have detailed his future you and Hull should definitely play the powerball this week. If He had a pair Mr. Mary would walk through the PIAA Tourney. I feel bad for such a great coach and great sport for having to deal with such premaddonas(sp?)like Hull.

anonymous Mon. 2/8 @ 2:02 PM is about Demi not Hull. You can't even read. Plus, we can't even follow what you are talking about...Hull(you)him{Hull}. What is up with that? Hull is a great kid and great athlete. You must not personally know him.

I heard that mike hull wants to compete in the olympics, but he doesn't want to get hurt. So he will have to sit this one out.

Why are so many people obsessed with a kid who has never won a wpial title, only has wrestled one year, took 6th at states, and is to scared to wrestle other high school kids? If he is truly that good he would dominate, the list of wrestlers who had division 1 scholarships and dominated this sport is to long to write down. Was kolat or hunter not going to compete because of injury. Those guys were men enough to not be scared of anything. Can we please stop comparing this 1x state placer (6th), to the wrestling greats that have come through this area.

This is funny. People are not obsessed with Hull, just obsessed with bashing him. He is a great young man. He came out for wrestling for two reasons. 1: because the work outs are so intense it helps him stay in shape. 2: To try to help his teammates and friends if he can. He has no dreams or aspirations about individual titles. To bash him about being injured is just plain ignorant.

Someday when you are down and out and feeling low because you can not help your friends because of an injury, maybe someone so ignorant as you are will be there to tear you down just a little bit more!

Also, I do not believe anyone has tried to compare Hull to the great wrestlers that have came out of this area. Maybe to the great football players, but not wrestlers.

TWO HEROS THAT HELP WIN THE MATCH

1. Colt Shorts PIN

2. Will Pihou PIN

Everybody wrestled well and the stars lined up for CM yesterday with extra time for Hull to heal and starting the match at 103 but in the end CM won. Kiski deserves a lot of credit for getting to the finals and their boys wrestled hard but just came up short thats all!
