Conley wins gold

Dan Conley of Burgettstown pinned Dan Winnie of Danville in 3:03 to capture the 215-pound weight class in the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey Saturday. Conley lifted Winnie into the air with a double-leg and sent him to his back before pinning him. Conley, a senior, became the first state champion in Terry Havelka's 16-year tenure as head coach and the first Blue Devils wrestler since Jeff Abbott won the 189-pound title in 1992. Conley punctuated the victory with a flex pose.

Virgili takes second

Ethan Virgili of Jefferson-Morgan dropped a 2-1 four-overtime decision to Roman San Doval of Shady Side Academy in the 189-pound finals of the PIAA Championships at the Giant Center. This was the fourth meeting between the two wrestlers this season and San Doval has won three times. San Doval sealed it by controlling Virgili for the final 30-second rideout. Virgili is the first Jefferson-Morgan wrestler since Aaron Jennings (145 in 2004) to reach the finals. Virgili attemds Carmichaels and wrestles for the Rockets through a co-op agreement.

PIAA Extra: Hull beaten

Canon-McMillan sophomore Michael Hull was defeated by Manheim Central's Jordan Enck in the semifinals of the 215-pound weight class in the PIAA Class AAA Championships at Giant Center. Enck won by technical fall 17-2. Hull injured his right ankle while giving up a five-point move in the second period. Enck, a state runner-up last season, turned Hull twice more in the period to go up 11-2. In the third period, Enck had a takedown and turned Hull twice more to end it with seven seconds to go.

PIAA Extra: Johnston loses

Canon-McMillan senior Colin Johnston, who won a state title as a sophomore and finished runner-up last year, was beaten by Adam Will of Indian Valley in the 135-pound semifinals of the PIAA Wrestling Championships at Giant Center Saturday. Johnston and Will battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation. After a scoreless first overtime, Johnston chose down but could not escape. Will escaped with 16 seconds left in the third overtime to win it. Johnston finished in third place following a 3-0 decision over Jake O'Hara of Crestwood.

PIAA Extra: Day 1

News outside the area at the PIAA Wrestling Championships in Hershey.

Here is how much things have changed in wrestling. Two defending state champions were defeated in the first round and there was hardly a ripple of noise from the crowd. Frank Martellotti of Shady Side Academy and Nate Eachus of Hazelton were unceremoniously dumped in the first round, Martellotti in Class AA and Eachus in Class AAA.

Why the blase attitude? Maybe it was because of this: 14 weight classes are too many, even for a state tournament. There are some weights that are incredibly difficult and some that are, well, for lack of a better term, easier. Martellotti's plight seemed to be set from the Powerade tournament, where he lost twice and the whispers began that he might not repeat. The interestintg part is that Shady Side needs him to do well in the wrestlebacks in order to make a run at the team title.

Eachus was shut out – SHUT OUT – in a first-round loss to Chartiers Valley's Matt Wilps, 7-0. And it wasn't that close. Eachus nearly gave up backpoints twice more in the bout. I don't recall that ever happening in the 28 years of covering this event for the Observer-Reporter.

Tony Dallago of Central Dauphin, a PIAA runner-up last season, needed an escape at the buzzer to tie send his bout against Northampton's James Sheptock into overtime. Dallago came away with a 5-2 overtime decision and it won't get any easier for him in the quarterfinals, where Quakertown's Jonathan Weibel waits.

The upper bracket of 103 pounds in Class AAA is unbelievably strong. Cameron Throckmorton (37-1) meets freshman sensation Nico Megaludis (34-0) of Franklin Regional; and Mark Rappo (47-0) of Council Rock South battles Greg Rinker (30-12) of Northampton. Throckmorton, Megaludis and Rappo are each regional champions.

Defending state champion Jordan Shields of Burrell appears headed for anotherr showdown with Dominick Demor of South Side Beaver in the 140-pound finals in Class AA. Both looked strong in first-round victories.

Attendance for the first day was a combined 13,609.

Local state results

As I have done in the past, I will update the results of each local wrestler who is participating in the PIAA Championships after each round of the tournament. You can find the results right here on this blog. I will try to add a new wrinkle and describe a little bit about what happened and why. I will also post links that show the state event updated bracket by bracket.

Of course, all of this depends on the wireless connection holding up, which was iffy at times in Johnstown.
