WPIAL Class AA notes

So Cody Wiercioch is human.
The phenom freshman from Charleroi suffered the first loss of the season and his varsity career in the 152-pound finals of the WPIAL Class AA Championships to Burrell's Travis McKillop. It was a great match to watch, and a large portion of the crowd in Chartiers Valley High School left after it was over. I was struck by a few things: 1. McKillop is a really good wrestler and has been overshadowed by Wiercioch this season. 2. Wiercioch could use a little more work on getting out from the bottom. 3. Wiercioch's maturity was evident even in defeat. After the loss, he was a stand-up guy with the media. A lot of wrestlers who suffered such a disappointment would disappear after the awards stand presentation. Expect great things in his career.

Fort Cherry has not had the best of luck this season. Heavyweight Cory Garry broke his hand and couldn't wrestle in the postseason. Flu ravaged the team in mid-January and the numbers in the room weren't great. But the Rangers have a nice 1-2-3 punch in the upper weights with Sam Guidi (160), Gary Kiefer (189) and Greg Kumer (215). Guidi and Kiefer each won WPIAL titles and Kumer was fourth.

Matthew Cunningham of Shady Side Academy won his fourth WPIAL title, becoming only the 19th wrestler in WPIAL history to achieve such a feat. Cunningham's fortune is Dakota DesLauriers' bad luck. The freshman from Burrell is an outstanding talent but probably will be second in his weight because of Cunningham.

The more I watch Michael Innes, the more I'm convinced he will medal at the state tournament. The junior from Chartiers-Houston tore up a weak 140 weight class to win a WPIAL championship. If he keeps wrestling angry, and stays healthy, he will have a strong finish.

The area should feel good about winning seven WPIAL championships. Washington and Greene counties have gone through some lean times. But this performance was one to be hopeful that wrestling is going to make a surge again.

What's in a name?

I have been contacted by the Grillo family about the use of their name on responses to my blog. It seems someone is posing as their family member when posting here. They are concerned that people who do not know that's the case will believe a member of their family is making these comments. They feel it might reflect poorly on them because of that and politely asked me to do something about it. I agree. So the Dirty Grillo responder needs to change his Web name or I will have to delete the comments.

When posting to this blog, I have usually allowed responders a lot of lattitude. No swearing. Don't say anything that could be libelous or malicious or crude. If someone is using a name that misrepresents who he or she is, then I feel that crosses the line, too. So figure out a different name and that will make us all happy.

Garber, Semple to nationals

Waynesburg University had two junior wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Division III championships over the weekend. Nick Garber won the 133-pound title and Corbin Semple was first at 184 pounds.
The national tournament will be held March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Garber and Semple qualified for the Division III national championships last season but each came up one match short of All-American status.
Garber avenged an earlier loss to Thiel’s Corey Brown in the 133-pound final with a 6-0 decision. Brown beat Garber, 3-2, at this year’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships. Semple, the top seed at 184 pounds, beat Trine’s Nicholas Kraus 10-5 in this year’s finals. Semple won the 197-pound title in 2009.
Garber pinned Charles Holmquest of Manchester in 10 seconds to advance to the semifinals. He decisioned Olivet’s Adam Wilson 9-4 to set up the rematch with Brown.
Semple pinned Case Western’s Peter Heggs is 58 seconds in the first round and decisioned Patrick Morris of Thiel 10-5 in the semis.

Section tournament notes

Because of the quantity of qualifiers, there were no great surprises in any of the three section tournaments. So here are a few thoughts on each section outcome.

Section 1
The biggest happening in this event was the injury to Colin Checkan of South Side Beaver, who sprained an ankle in his match against Michael Innes of Chartiers-Houston. Checkan was down 5-1 in the first when Innes hit another five-point move and Checkan injured his ankle there. He was walking on it but had a noticeable limp after the loss. Innes, meanwhile, hit his first five-point move with the same headlock move that injured his ribcage in last year's postseason. ... Fort Cherry heavyweight Cory Garry did not compete because his broken hand was not healed enough to go. ... The only upset of the day was Vic LiPari of Chartiers-Houston getting pinned by South Side Beaver freshman Connor Payne in the 119-pound semifinals. LiPari finished third.

Section 2
Josh Kwasny of Charleroi was apparently a victim of the long layoff from practice. The talented 119-pounder failed to make weight and is out of the tournament. ... Colton Blumer (135) of West Greene and Dylan Demain (160) of Bentworth each had a forfeit in their finals because of injuries.

Section 3
Burrell's Nolan Greenwald won his fourth section title when he pinned Ron Dakan of Mars in the 160-pound finals. Greenwald's temmates Travis McKillop (152) and Brian Beattie (215) each won the third. Greenwald made school history by becoming the first wrestler at Burrell to be a part of four WPIAL team championships and win four section titles. ... Greenwald's brother, Hayden, scratched because of a leg injury.

Alignment changes

The WPIAL has released its wrestling alignment for next season and the most significant part of it locally is the separation of
Trinity and Canon-McMillan. The two teams will be in the same section, 4, but in different subsections. C-M will be in Section 4A and Trinity in 4B.

The two teams can continue to wrestle but the dual meet would not count as a section match. It's also possible they could meet in the Section Tournament.

Waynesburg Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township are in the Trinity subsection. C-M has Chartiers Valley, Moon, Montour, Upper St. Clair and West Allegheny.

The WPIAL cut Class AAA down to four sections and will revamp the qualifiers for the WPIAL Team Tournament. The top two teams from each subsection still make it but the two third-place teams in each subsection wrestle for a fifth qualifier to the team tournament. That makes five qualifiers from each section to form a 20-team tournament.

In the individual postseason, the WPIAL will allow five qualifiers from each of the four section to advance to the WPIAL Championships in Class AAA. The top three from that tournament move on to the state tournament in Hershey.

Read more about the changes in Wednesday's O-R.

Unbelievable Big Macs

There are two things that will be hard to find today: a happy Kiski wrestling fan and critics of Michael Hull.
In one of the most selfless, team-oriented efforts in some time, Hull stepped onto the mat with a mildly separated shoulder and beat heavyweight Steve Calderone, 3-2, in the final bout of the night to give Canon-McMillan a 32-27 victory over Kiski in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament finals at Fox Chapel.
The win is the first WPIAL team wrestling title for the Big Macs since 1995 and sends them right into Friday's second round at the Giant Center in Hershey.
It would not have happened had it not been for Hull, a senior who has a football scholarship to Penn State, putting his health on the line. He also put his football career at risk. Hull could have easily suffered a more severe injury to the shoulder and that could cost him a possible pro career.
Hull had not wrestled since injuring the shoulder in an All-Star football game 11 days ago and was only participating in the team portion of the wrestling season because he loves the sport. Hull drew some criticism on this blog, but it seems his dedication to the sport was genuine. Had he not wrestled, C-M would have lost, simple as that.
Canon-McMillan has now wrestled two incredible bouts in a row, a semifinal win over Penn Trafford in which Zach Thomas stunned the Warriors with a pin and the finals in which Hull was the hero. C-M was the underdog in both dual meets and won in spectacular fashion.
This was the first WPIAL team title for Hull in any sport during his scholastic career, and it might be the most satisfying. It's unlikely he'll wrestle in Hershey. You could tell he was in some pain, but the Big Macs are champions today, in part, because what he did.
There were other big wins for the Big Macs, a double-overtime decision by Connor Schram at 112 and an unexpected pin by William Pihiou at 125.
"I told (Mike) that he'll remember this day for the rest of his life," C-M head coach Chris Mary said after the match.
Big Mac fans will make sure it lives on longer than that.

C-M finds a hero

There are so few moments like these in scholastic wrestling that they just need to be remembered for a long time. Canon-McMillan needed a hero Thursday night in its semifinal match against Penn Trafford in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament and Zach Thomas stepped up.

The sophomore with a 4-10 record registered one of the most important pins in C-M wrestling history when he locked a cross-face cradle and turned PT's Matt Lago on his back in 2:21. The pin was captured by Eleanor Bailey of The Almanac for your enjoyment here.

The Big Mac coaches were just hoping Thomas wouldn't get pinned and he gave them the win that turned the dual meet into a 28-27 victory. That sent C-M into the WPIAL team finals and qualified them for the PIAA Team Tournament for the first time since 2006.

The match drew a big crowd to Charleroi, which also will be the site of the CM-Kiski finals, and brought back memories of some of the big dual meets held there when Washington and Greene counties were the powers of the WPIAL. \

In an era where forfeits and avoiding matchups are the norm for most dual meets, Thomas' win was refreshing and showed wrestling fans how unpredictable the sport can be.

Tournament notes

This is the type of recognition Jefferson-Morgan High School's wrestling team did not want. Nine wrestlers were suspended from last night's WPIAL Class AA Team Tournament dual meet against Burgettstown for disciplinary reasons. That left head coach Scott Rhodes with only five wrestlers to compete against the Blue Devils. The incident occurred this week and there was discussion about suspending the wrestlers for the remainder of the season. A one-match suspension was finally agreed to and the wrestlers will be permitted to compete in the individual postseason. But this was an embarrassment to the school and the program.

Filling a full lineup is tantamount in winning a team tournament title. Chartiers-Houston could not do that against Burrell and that's one reason why they were defeated 41-31 in the semifinals. C-H heavyweight Nate Grandelis has a bad thumb and 103-pounder Jerry Yarkosky weighs only 90 pounds after a big meal. A team might be able to get away with one forfeit but two are devastating at this level of the team tournament. But C-H should field a strong team for the coming seasons and that might attract more athletes to participate. This is a team on the rise.

There might not be a more frustrating site to hold the Class AA Team Tournament than Burrell High School. It has nothing to do with the people - the administration is very friendly and organized. The food at the concession stand is always good and the janitors keep the place clean. The problem is the gymnasium is not set up for wrestling. The sound system is bad, score for one match has to be kept on two scoreboards - one for the bout score and the other for the team score - and the portable scoreboard used for the second match had such a low-sounding buzzer that a runner had to go on the mat and tell the referee when the period was ending. Improvements are needed.

Let's give Burgettstown a big well-done for a season that could have been difficult and fractious. They handled Terry Havelka's coaching situation in a thoughtful and intelligent manner. Havelka wanted time to watch his son Jeff wrestle this year so the board decided on co-coaches, naming AD Jon Vallina, as one of the co-coaches. While it was a rare situation, it has been done before. Burgettstown had a strong season, driving to the semifinals of the Class AA Team Tournament and should have state qualifiers from this group of wrestlers. Other schools might have not been so receptive to the co-coaching idea but Burgettstown was smart enough to embrace it.

To make a point, again

I get criticism for my criticsm of the WPIAL Team Tournament and the amount of teams they include and time it takes to hold. Here is an example of what drives me crazy. In our local Class AA matches, 18 of the 56 scheduled bouts were forfeits. For those of you who struggle with math, that's 32 percent of the bouts.

The team tournament is supposed to showcase your best talent. Is this the best Class AA has to offer? Why were these teams in the tournament in the first place? The coaches and wrestlers know that by forfeiting so many weight classes, they have little or no chance of winning.

If you want to hold the tournament, fine. Run the subsection tournaments on a Tuesday and begin the WPIAL Team Tournament on a Thurday and run it through the weekend. Cut the number of teams down to section champions or subsection champions and get on with it.

By the way, the crowd at South Side Beaver Monday was small. SSB had a good following but I counted eight fans sitting on the Keystone Oaks side of the gym.
