WPIAL Championships, Day 1

Only one top-seeded wrestlers was beaten in Friday's first round of the WPIAL Class AA Championships. Corey Falleroin of Burrell was routed by Taylor Wentzel of South Park, 13-6, in the  145-pound quarterfinals. Falleroni got the top seed in part because he won the Section 3 title and owns a 6-4 upset over Tanner Sutton of Chartiers-Houston in the WPIAL Team Tournament. Falleroni's record is 16-12.

Jefferson-Morgan brought 11 wrestlers and has four in the semifinals. Dustin Conti, an undefeated junior, had a close call in the quarterfinals, needing a double-leg takedown with about a minute left to take a 4-3 decision from Burrell’s Derrick Beattie.

Chartiers-Houston has four of nine in the semifinals, including Dylan Shultz-Terling, who came in with a 6-12 record at 195 but pinned his two opponents in a combined 2:31. Top-seeded Jordan Kitta (26-1) of Southmoreland is next.

Bentworth had a tough first day, pushing two of 10 qualifiers through to the semifinals. Burgettstown had three of eight survive and Charleroi’s trio of Aaron Toth (126), Josh Kwasny (132) and  Nick Gavazzi (138) had no problems advancing.

Only first-round losers were eliminated from the tournament.
Semifinals are 11:30 a.m. and finals are 7 p.m.

Section tournament notes

Fort Cherry’s 195-pound senior Tanner Garry, who is an invited walk-on for Bowling Green’s football team, has pulled out of the postseason. He had a 12-1 record.
Fort Cherry’s other highly regarded heavyweights – Corey Garry and Greg Kumer – are healthy and happy at heavyweight and 220, respectively.
Jefferson-Morgan’s John Demaske was expected to drop to 106 but changed his mind and will remain at 113.
Ditto for Bentworth’s Francis Mizia, whose drop to 152 didn’t take place. He will stay at 160.
John Davidson, a rugby player at Burrell who came out for wrestling last month to help the Bucs earn their sixth  consecutive WPIAL Team Tournament title, has apparently returned to rugby. He’s not competing, despite a top ranking at 195.
Defending state champion Jason Nolf of Kittanning ruined the day of some 113 pounders by dropping to that weight class.

The Wash High problem

One of my friends who follows wrestling in this area was talking about my previous story on Washington possibly eliminating the wrestling program. His comment stuck with me, because I think it's not only true but also holds the solution to resurrect the program.
"You can't kill a program that's been dead for the last five years," he said.
He's right.
At one point, Washington High School's wrestling program was as successful and talented as any in Class AA. It wasn't that long ago that the Prexies were winning team titles, crowning WPIAL champions and getting placement medals at the state tournament. Now, the Prexies struggle in all those categories.
It's a numbers problem. That problem was caused when the school board - not this one making the decision on the program's future - eliminated the junior high program five years ago. It cut the flow of talent into the varsity, leaving a gap between the youth program and the high school.
No wrestling program can survive over a long period of time without a feeder system. Athletes, who reach that abyss, get frustrated and choose other sports. Wrestling is not like football or basketball, where you can hone your skills on a court or on a field. Wrestling needs the progression of athletes from youth, to junior high, then varsity to remain competitive.
I don't know what the school board will do after Monday's meeting. There were so many people who came to support not just wrestling but tennis and soccer, too. Those sports also are on the chopping block.
If there is a desire to save wrestling, then the board must go all the way, and also revive the junior high program. I understand the costs involved and I know the district is looking to cut, not add, to the budget. The wrestling program needs a feeder system to thrive again, which would mean larger crowds and more tickets sold for dual meets if it's successful. In that way, it would not be a major drain on the budget.
Leaving the wrestling program as is is a gamble because the numbers will stay low without a feeder system and the question of whether to continue the program will be brought up again.
Then, we will go through this all over again.

When this blog was created, the idea behind it was to give wrestling fans an opportunity to express their opinions and stay informed about what was happening in the sport. For most of this season, however, you all have tried my patience.

This blog is a requirement of my job, and I am expected to police it as best I can with the time I have available. You all have made that a taxing responsibility for me by acting like 5-year-olds with this bickering and all the crude comments. I can't keep up.

So here's the deal.

Either tone it down or I will restrict you all from freely posting on my blog. I will moderate every comment and decide what goes in and what gets trashed if that happens. No more same-time posting. If that's what it takes to get a more civil tone, then I will be happy to do that. It's up to you.

Now, I'm going to get some aspirins.

Wash High program in jeopardy

The Washington School District is going to discuss whether to keep the wrestling program going in the future. Here is a letter from one of its former wrestlers.

Greetings Wash High Wrestling Alumni. It was brought to my attention through facebook (Chris Bruno) that a Wash High school board meeting was scheduled for Jan. 30 and on the agenda was a motion to eliminate the wrestling program. I called the school and spoke with former Wash High wrestler and current highschool prinicpal Frank Rotunda. It was explained to me that the meeting was for administration only and the next public school board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 13. I will be requesting time at that meeting to address the school board members regarding the wrestling program. If you cannot attend the meeting and you want your voice heard please email me a statement to cwtarr@hotmail.com and I will make copies and submit to the board. I was also told that elimination of the wrestling program is discussed every year due to lack of funding and poor participation by the current students. I have been told that the current team consists of 10 wrestlers filling 8 weight classes and 6 of them have a legit chance of making it to the WPIAL tournament. It was brought to my attention that the wrestler with the most promise is only a sophomore. If we can save the program for at least one more year, I would like to volunteer to become an alumni relations contact. I know that I feel very out of touch with the program and had no idea that the program was sufffering year after year. I would also like to create 2-3 fundraisers each year to include alumni and help the program thrive. If you have suggestions with fundraising ideas please email me. It is my goal on Feb. 13 to help the program survive and keep the alumni up to date with the team. I know that the program has meant a great deal to me and I'm sure many of you. Please help me in restoring the wrestling program! Please feel free to pass along this message to any and all wrestling alumni that you know. I know that there are hundreds and hundreds more that I have no contact with. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Chris Tarr

Team semifinal notes

Connor Schram won his 100th career match in the Big Macs 52-9 rout of Greensburg Salem in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament Friday at Ringgold.
Schram expected it to come earlier this season, but he missed about five weeks with muscle spasms in his back. His 16-1 technical fall over Austin Shaw at 120 pounds gave him a 100-7 career mark.
The top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Big Macs (20-0) celebrated by earning a spot in the team finals against North Allegheny, a team they beat 46-12 Dec. 23. The Big Macs can win their third consecutive WPIAL championship today if they can repeat that feat against NA at Chartiers Valley High School.
Brendan Price had an impressive 6-1 decision over Austin Caldwell at 106 that gave C-M a 36-9 lead and Dalton Macri (113) and Colt Shorts (126) capped the scoring with a technical fall and pin, respectively.

Burrell was a surprise 33-28 winner over Chartiers-Houston in Double-A. Burrell is looking for its sixth straight WPIAL championship since the format changed in 1979. No other school has won that many in a row.
The most shocking loss for the Bucs came at 145, where Tanner Sutton lost a 6-4 decision in overtime to Corey Falleroni, a sophomore who is now 10-10. Sutton, who missed the first month of competition with a shoulder injury, had won 17 straight since returning.
Another big win for Burrell came at 182, where John Davidson pinned Steve Hazlett in 1:27. That gave Burrell a 27-16 lead and Dakota Deslauriers put the match away with a pin in 17 seconds of Jimmy Saieva at 195.
Henderson came out for the team in early January after spending the past two seasons on Burrell’s state champion rugby team.

In one of the most bizarre moments of any WPIAL Team Tournament, Jefferson-Morgan and Bentworth exchanged four forfeits in a row in JM's 49-21 win.
The top-ranked and top-seeded Rockets went into the exchange of forfeits with a 12-point lead and came out of it with a 12-point lead.
The win propels Jefferson-Morgan (15-1) into today’s finals against Burrell at Chartiers Valley High School (4 p.m.). J-M is making its first appearance in the finals since winning the 1995 title, 46-12, over West Allegheny.
Jefferson-Morgan won four of the five titles in Double-A from 1989-1993.

Transfers column

Since transfers have captured much of the attention on this blog, I thought you might want to read a guest columnist from the Easton newspaper about Bethlehem Catholic.
