Another title for Scott

STILLWATER, Okla.– Former Oklahoma State NCAA wrestling champion Coleman Scott added the title of World Cup Individual Champion to his career resume after going 5-0 this past weekend competing for Team USA at the FILA World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling in Baku, Azerbaijan. Scott’s undefeated run was a key factor in Team USA winning the bronze medal at the event.

Scott opened his day with a 0-1, 3-1, 2-1 win over Japan’s Kenichi Yumoto to lift Team USA to a 5-2 win over Japan. He then hammered Turkey’s Bayosul Mahmut, 4-2, 5-0 as part of another 5-2 win for the Americans. The lone U.S. defeat of the event was a 4-3 setback at the hands of traditional world power and eventual team champion Iran, but Scott still had a good showing in that clash, scoring a 1-0, 2-1 victory over Behnam Ehsanpoor.

A win by decision from Scott over Malkhaz Zarkua contributed to a 6-1 Team USA victory over Georgia and lifted the Americans into the bronze medal match against Russia, who Team USA dispatched by a 5-2 score thanks in part to Scott’s win by decision over Aleksandar Bagmaev.

Scott’s next competition will be the biggest of his career to date, as he suits up on June 7 to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. He will wrestle Team USA’s top-ranked wrestler at 60kg, Reece Humphrey, at Beat the Streets Gala in New York City. The winner of that clash gets a best-of-three winner-take-all series with Shawn Bunch for a spot on the U.S. Olympic roster.

Havelka will coach football, too

Terry Havelka was hired Monday night as Burgettstown High School's new football coach. Havelka replaces Matt Taylor, who resigned last month to become Keystone Oaks' football coach. Havelka is also the wrestling coach and plans to hold both positions for at least this season. The Burgettstown School Board will lighten his class load to help out.
Havelka spent 25 years coaching football at Burgettstown and served as Rege Onderick's offensive coordinator for 10 seasons. Havelka played at William & Mary, lettering four times and starting three seasons at defensive back and punt return.
Havelka has been head wrestling coach at Burgettstown for 19 years and has a record of 197-85.

Marino resigns as Trinity's coach

Mike Marino, who has coached Trinity's varsity wrestling team for the past three seasons, submitted his resignation to athletic direcotry Bobby Jones. The resignation will be presented at Thursday night's Trinity School Board Meeting.

Andy Puchany dies

Andrew Puchany, a legendary wrestler at Canonsburg High School and coach at Canon-McMillan, died Friday following a brief illness. Puchany was 91.
Puchany graduated from Canonsburg in 1939 as the first four-time WPIAL champion, and he capped his scholastic career with a state championship in 1939 at 125 pounds. Puchany was the third state champion in Canonsburg history.
Following service with the U.S.Army, Puchany wrestled at Indiana University, where he was a four-time placewinner in the Big Ten Tournament including a championship in 1948.
A member of the inaugural class of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1990, Puchany coached at Canonsburg and Canon-McMillan from 1957-1970 . He compiled a 152-40 record in 14 seasons with 22 WPIAL champions and three state champions.

Mary honored as National Coach of the Year

McGuffey wrestling job opened

McGuffey's school board has opened the varsity wrestling position. Jeff Breese Sr. had been the head coach and is still able to reapply for the job. The Highlanders competed in Section 4B-AAA and finished in last place with an 0-5 record. They were 3-7 overall.

Bunch finishes third

Shawn Bunch took third place at 60kg (132 pounds) in last weekend's Wolrd Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament in China. That means the United States can send a wrestler to the London Olympics this summer.
Who that wrestler will be has not been determined.
Coleman Scott, a Waynesburg High School graduate, won the weight at the Olympic Team Trials last week. Bunch bypassed the event so that he could wrestle in China. Bunch, because of his ranking, can challenge Scott for the right to represent the U.S. at the Olympics. There will be a mini-tournament June 7 in New York City to determine the winner. Reece Humphrey, who missed the Olympic Trials because of injury, will also compete, thanks to his ranking in the weight class.
Humphrey, the 2011 U.S. World Team member will wrestle Scott, and the winner advances to the  Championship Series against Bunch
Bunch won five of his six bouts in China, including a three-period victory against Bazar Bazarguruev of Kyrgzstan that secured the Olympic spot for USA Wrestling.

Dobbin to Pitt-Johnstown

Dario Dobbin, a two-time state medalist for Canon-McMillan's wrestling team, will continued his athletic and academic careers at Pitt-Johnstown next fall. Dobbin was part of three WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament championship teams, and back-to-back state team titles at the individual tournament. This year, he helped C-M captured the PIAA Team Tournament title in February.
A WPIAL runner-up, Dobbin placed seventh in this year's PIAA individual tournament at 145 pounds, the same position he finished in last year's tournament.
Dobbin finished his senior season with a 39-11 record and made first team on the Observer-Reporter's All-District Wrestling Team. His career record was 135-45.
