Teasdale makes it two in a row

For Gavin Teasdale, the journey to greatness in the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament is halfway complete.
But it did not come without some drama.
Teasdale, the undefeated defending state champion from Jefferson-Morgan, made it two gold medals in as many years in this event when he won a hard-fought 6-5 decision over Patrick Glory of Delbarton, N.J., in the 113-pound finals of a packed gym at Canon-McMillan High School.
Teasdale trailed 3-2 heading into the final two minutes but registered two takedowns, the final one with 1:04 left to secure the win.
“I knew he was going to have a game plan against me,” said Teasdale. “I held back a little and I didn’t finish my takedowns when I had the chance so I have to work on that.”
Teasdale gave up a second period takedown to Glory, the first points scored against the J-M sophomore this season.
“The next time I wrestle him, I just have to go to my offense better,” he said. “I didn’t do too good in this match, but I won.”
Teasdale had a 2-0 lead after one period but Glory escaped, then took Teasdale down with 37 seconds remaining in the period.
“We had to do all the work because he knew what we were going to do and capitalized on it,” said J-M head coach Mike Lesko. “He has nothing to lose. He is coming at you 100 percent.
“I told Gavin the match is not 4:20 seconds. The match is six minutes. Gavin proved it. Kids are going to come after him. That’s 1 and 5 in the nation going at each other but Gavinn did his job. He won.”

Teasdale was the only local wrestler to make it to the finals.

Scott third at U.S. Senior Nationals

North Carolina head wrestling coach Coleman Scott took third place at 57 kg (126 pounds) at last weekend's U.S. Nationals/Trials Qualifier at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist will compete for a place on the 2016 Olympic team at the U.S. Trials in Iowa City in April.
After an opening round bye, Scott, a Waynesburg High School graduate, scored a pair of 10-0 technical falls against Stevan Micic and Andrew Hochstrasser. Wrestling for the Sunkist Kids, Scott dropped a 3-2 decision to eventual champion Daniel Dennis of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club in the semifinals before handing Nathan Tomasello a tech fall in the consolation semis. Scott finished the event by decisioning Erkin Tadzhimetov of the New York AC, 7-3, to claim third place.

Thoughts from the week of wrestling

1. I didn't give Trinity much hope of defeating Canon-McMillan Wednesday night but I like the energy and optimism Mark Powell brings to the match. The head coach is fun to talk to and sometimes says things that make you scratch your head. It was a close match for a while -- Trinity trailed only 17-15 after 8 bouts -- but C-M's heavyweight were dominant in a 43-18 win.

2. The Big Macs have some injury problems - 3 starters were out against the Hillers - so it is a little hard to evaluate them until their performance in Powerade. Head coach Jason Cardillo has a tough job because I am sure everyone compares this team with the ones Chris Mary led to five state titles in three years. They might not want to but it's human nature. Just make sure you don't overlook the talent. It's there and the Big Macs will have a strong season. If healthy.

3. I thought Peters Township would struggle this season because of the wrestlers lost to graduation -- 81 wins from three wrestlers -- but Jason Carpetta has a nice team. It was apparent in their second-place finish in the Chartiers-Houston Tournament that the Indians will have a nice run in the team portion of the season.

4. First upset of the season: Seneca Valley 37, North Allegheny 36. It came down to the final bout and Francis Duggan needed a pin. He got a tech. fall. Duggan is a transfer from Cumberland Valley. Seneca Valley chewed NA up in the lighter weights.

5. Spencer Lee, the undefeated two-time state champion from Franklin Regional, is expected back in late January. Lee is out with a shoulder injury, suffered in the preseason.

6. How much difference does a year make? Gavin Teasdale, fresh from a win at the Eastern Invitation Tournament, is 14 pounds heavier and looks even strong on the mat, if that's possible.
