BV, Burrell top seeds in tourney

Thanks to a regular season victory over Franklin Regional, Belle Vernon received the No. 1 seed in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament and Burrell, seeking its ninth consecutive title, was top seeded in Class AA.
Matches get under way Monday with four Class AAA pigtail dual meets. The rest of the tournament starts Wednesday with four teams wrestling at the top seeds – No. 2 South Fayette, No. 3 McGuffey and No. 4 Jefferson-Morgan in Class AA and Belle Vernon, No. 2 Franklin Regional, No. 3 North Allegheny and No. 4 Latrobe in Class AAA. The doubleheaders at these sites are at 6 p.m. with the winners competing at 7:30 p.m. Burrell, which has a first-round bye, is in a three-team pod.
One change for this season is that the semifinals and finals will be wrestled at one site Saturday, Jan. 31. Semifinals are at 1 p.m. and finals are at 3:30 p.m. Penn Hills is the site for Class AAA and Canon-McMillan for Class AA.
Other local teams competing are Burgettstown and Beth-Center at the Jefferson-Morgan pod, and Chartiers-Houston at the McGuffey pod in Class AA; and Waynesburg at the Belle Vernon pod in Class AAA.
In Class AAA, Trinity travels to Butler and Peters Township is at Hopewell for 7 p.m. pigtail matches Monday. If successful in the pigtail round, Peters Township would draw North Allegheny and Trinity would meet Franklin Regional in the first round.

Stock up, Stock down

Stock Up

Austin McDermitt, Burgettstown
After losing in the finals of the Tri-CADA Tournament two weeks ago, the senior roared through the 120-pound weight class and won with ease.

James Campbell, California
After medaling (fourth place) in the Tri-CADA tournament, Campbell had a stronger showing in the Burgettstown Tournament, taking second place at 138.

Nick Kusich, Avella
Kusich lost in the semifinals of the Tri-CADA and finished third. At Burgettstown, Kusich won three matches with three pins in a combined 5:36.

Stock down
J.J. Walker, South Fayette
The PIAA runner-up at 160 pounds lost twice this week. He fell to Greg Bulsak of South Park, 8-5, in a regular-season dual meet. Walker avenged that loss in the semifinals of the Allegheny County Tournament but then fell to Te'Shan Campbell of Penn Hills in the finals.

Andrew John, South Fayette
John entered the Allegheny County Tournament seeded second but lost in the quarterfinals and finished seventh.

Shane Piper, Waynesburg
Piper won the 152-pound title at the Tri-CADA  but was upended by William Bell of Connellsville in a regular season finale.

CM, McGuffey and South Fayette to host tourney

Three local teams will host their respective pod in the WPIAL Team Section Tournament Wednesday.
In Class AA, McGuffey is the site for Section 2 and South Fayette for Section 1. Canon-McMillan will host Section 4 in Class AAA.
The format is the same as last year’s with doubleheaders at each pod. Four teams wrestle in each section pod at 6 p.m. Those winners will wrestle at 7:30 p.m. for the section title. The losers wrestle for third and fourth.
Fifth-place bouts will take place at different sites. The top five teams in each section advance so only the losers of the fifth-place bouts are eliminated.
Those placements will help in the seeding process for the WPIAL Team tournament, which begins the week of Jan. 26.

Stock up, stock down

Over the weekend, the Tri-CADA wrestling tournament was held. Here is one opinion on whose stock rose and whose stock fell.

Stock Up

Brendan Howard, Jefferson-Morgan
He had an underwhelming performance in the PowerAde Christmas Wrestling Tournament, taking 6th at 120. But he won the weight class in the Tri-CADA event and beat Austin McDermitt of Burgettstown in the process.

Camden Fontenot, Canon-McMillan
Fontenot came into the Tri-CADA unseeded but won the 126-pound weight class, beating top-seeded Hunter Neely of Bentworth.

Shane Piper, Waynesburg
Piper also entered the Tri-CADA tournament unseeded but knocked off the Nos. 1 and 2 seed in winning the title.

Bill Bowlen, Jefferson-Morgan
Bowlen took some hits early in the season, losing to Colin McCracken of Waynesburg in a dual meet and failing to place at  PowerAde. But he looked strong in winning the 170 weight class at Tri-CADA.

Stock Down

Logan Henderson, Waynesburg
Second seed at 126, Henderson fell into the consolations on the first day of the Tri-CADA after a loss to Fontenot. He did come back and take third.

Nick Kusich, Avella
The top seed at 152, Kusich was knocked into consolations after a loss to Piper but battled back to finish third.

Ian Wolfe, Jefferson-Morgan
Wolfe came into the heavyweight division as the top seed but lost his second bout to Brendan Furman of Canon-McMillan. Wolfe finished third.

A close call

Canon-McMillan has one of the more impressive winning streaks in the WPIAL, and it has nothing to do with the state tournament.
The Big Macs have not lost a section dual meet since 2001, when West Allegheny defeated them. That's 14 seasons of winning section dual meets. During that span, the Big macs won five state team titles.
But in Wednesday night's dual meet against Waynesburg, the Big Macs were teetering. With one bout remaining, C-M sent out a wrestler in Jared Hladycz, who was in his first season of wrestling. That's right, never wrestled in middle school or the youth leagues. Hladycz was wrestling Brandon Arnold, who also was in his first season as a wrestler. No middle school. No youth league.
Hladycz pinned Arnold to give Canon-McMillan a 29-24 victory in Waynesburg's gymnasium.
What struck me most about this match is that two historically successful programs relied on such inexperience in their lineups.
That's not to denigrate the outcome or the accomplishment. Hladycz was not only overjoyed, he was astonished when told that Canon-McMillan even had this streak.
In a way, that was the beautiful part of it.
