Wiercioch avenges loss to McKillop

Cody Wiercioch has been waiting for this moment since he suffered a 4-3 loss to his arch-rival Travis McKillop of Burrell in the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament.
In one of the most anticipated and highly charged bout of the WPIAL Class AA Championships, Wiercioch, a defending state champion from Charleroi, grabbed a hard-fought, 2-1 decision from McKillop in the 160-pound finals at Chartiers Valley High School Saturday night.
Wiercioch, a sophomore, was one of four local wrestlers to capture WPIAL gold.
Michael Innes of Chartiers-Houston won his second straight championship with a 10-6 decision over Francis Mizia of Bentworth at 145 pounds.
Senior Nick Carr, the defending state champion from South Fayette, took a 7-1 decision from Mike Pavasko of Steel Valley at 152 pounds.
And Jeff Tarley, a senior from Beth-Center, upended top-seeded Corey Garry of Fort Cherry, 3-1 in overtime for the heavyweight title.

Class AA Championship notes

The first night of the WPIAL Class AA Wrestling Championships went off without many surprises. But there were these: Ryan Zalar of Jefferson-Morgan knocked off fourth-seeded Nick Zanetta of Keystone Oaks 9-2 at 119; Josh Kwasny of Charleroi won by a 16-1 technical fall over third-seeded Connor Payne of South Side Beaver at 135; and West Greene’s Wade Durbin pinned fourth-seed Aiden Talerico of Beaver in 24 seconds at 152 pounds.

Another bout between Burrell's Travis McKillop and Charleroi defending state champion Cody Wiercioch is just a win away for each wrestler. Both easily made it into the semifinals with dominating performances. Wiercioch meets Garrett Vulcano of Chartiers-Houston and McKillop battled Bentworth's Dylan Demain Saturday morning.

The tournament had a female wrestler. Riverview freshman Megan Moroney was pinned by Nicholas Ellefson of Blackhawk in 44 seconds at 103 pounds in the first round. Moroney dropped to the wrestlebacks, where she decisioned Terry Booth of Steel Valley, 10-6.

Matt Johnston of West Greene, top, tries to work a cradle into Fort Cherry's Tyler Weyers during their 145-pound bout in the WPIAL Class AA Championships at Chartiers Valley Friday. Johnston pinned Weyers in 4:30.

Jeremy Anesetti of Chartiers-Houston, top, ties up Allan Cratsenberg of Highlands during their 189-pound bout in the WPIAL Class AA Championships at Chartiers Valley Friday. Anesetti lost a 1-0 decision.

Garrett Vulcano of Chartiers-Houston, top, controls Ben Vranish of Yough during their 160-pound bout in the WPIAL Class AA Championships at Chartiers Valley Friday night. Vulcano pinned Vranish in 4:43 and later advanced to the semifinals with a 7-2 win over Jefferson-Morgan's Quincy Hathaway.

Wrestling notes

The WPIAL Class AA Championships are going to take place over the next two days, but I can't really get too excited. The district is sending seven - that's right, seven - wrestlers from each weight class to the Southwest Region Tournament.
It takes the suspense out of the tournament when nearly half the bracket in most cases advance to the next level.
The WPIAL, and the PIAA, do not understand this situation as being a drag on their tournaments. If there is nothing at stake, why spend money on a ticket to watch?

There is one match that will keep my attention at this tournament. The battle expected at 160 pounds, where Charleroi's defending state champion Cody Wiercioch and Travis McKillop of Burrell are expected to meet in the finals.
These two wrestlers have been in some great matches over the past two years, including a 4-3 win by McKillop in the finals of the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament. That is one match I would buy a ticket to watch.

The Southwest Region Tournament in Johnstown has changed its schedule from last year. Because the arena will be in use Saturday night, the wrestling tournament times have changed. Three sessions will be held on Friday and the finals will be held 10:15 a.m. Saturday. If you're going, make a note of the changes or you might walk into an empty arena.

There is a move afoot at Mapletown High School to resurrect the wrestling program. The school board gave the OK at this week's meeting to gauge interest and report back. If there is enough interest, then the program would be fazed in over the next couple of years.
I always have doubts about the success a tiny school such as Mapletown can have in any sport, especially when rumors keep swirling that the district might have to merge with another school for financial reasons.
Then, I remember South Fayette being in the same situation with its dormant program, bringing it back after co-opting with Chartiers Valley. The Lions have a good chance of seeing Nick Carr win a state title for the second season in a row in March.

Spearman out of tournament

This report from Mike Copper of GoErie.com:

McDowell junior Steve Spearman, a two-time district champion and the 2010 PIAA titlist at 130 pounds, won't add to those categories after he failed to make weight during the morning weigh-in at Central Tech's Al Calabrese Gymnasium

Spearman was the meet's top seed at 130, even though he wrestled most of the Trojans' regular season at 135 according to nwcaonline.com statistics.

He wasn't in attendance for the afternoon's championship matches, where Shawn Spearman emerged as the 125 champion.

"He's very depressed right now," the Trojans' freshman said of his older brother. "He's very mad about it."

According to Shawn Spearman, Steve originally planned to enter the individual postseason at 135.

However, he changed his mind so that McDowell senior Dylan Matz could compete at that weight.

"Steve tried to keep (his) weight at 130, but he couldn't make it," Shawn said.

Steve Spearman's 18-2 technical fall of General McLane's Jared Hurta in Friday's quarterfinals turned out to be his last match of a 27-6 season. His stunning departure left a canyon-like opportunity for 130's remaining semifinalists.

Why wait?

One of the silly quirks of the wrestling season is the month-long break from wrestling teams go through while the team tournament is going on. The last scheduled dual meet for some Class AAA wrestlers was January 19. The Class AA sections begin Saturday but the Class AAA wait a week because there is one less event, no regional tournament.

It makes more sense to begin the section tournaments for all wrestlers Saturday and give Class AAA a week off before the state tournament. That would at least allow injuries to heal.

One other thing that ruins the section tournaments is the large number of qualifiers out of each weight class, five. It's pretty difficult not to advance to the next level. It's worse in Class AA, where the top seven wrestlers in the WPIAL advance to the regional tournament in Johnstown. That type of cushion takes away any drama from the event.

Athlete won't wrestle girl at states

Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa – An Iowa high school wrestler who was one of the favorites to win his weight class defaulted on his first-round state tournament match rather than face one of the first girls to ever qualify for the event.
Joel Northrup, a home-schooled sophomore who was 35-4 wrestling for Linn-Mar High this season, said in a statement that he doesn’t feel it would be right for him to wrestle Cedar Falls freshman Cassy Herkelman. Herkelman, who was 20-13 entering the tournament, and fellow 112-pounder Ottumwa sophomore Megan Black, who was 25-13, made history by being the first girls to qualify for the state tournament. Black was pinned quickly in her opening round match.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times,” wrote Northrup. “As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa.”
There were several thousand fans on hand Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena, but many were watching other matches when the referee raised Herkelman’s hand to signal her win. There was a smattering of cheers and boos from the crowd before Herkelman was whisked into the bowels of the arena.
Tournament organizers declined to make Herkelman available for questions. Her next match is Friday.
In a text message to The Associated Press, her father, Bill Herkelman, said he understands Northrup’s decision.
“It’s nice to get the first win and have her be on the way to the medal round,” Bill Herkelman wrote. “I sincerely respect the decision of the Northrup family especially since it was made on the biggest stage in wrestling. I have heard nothing but good things about the Northrup family and hope Joel does very well the remainder of the tourney.”
Linn-Mar athletics director Scott Mahmens said the school would not penalize Northrup for defaulting. Because he defaulted and didn’t forfeit, Northrup is eligible to compete in consolation rounds. Black will also compete in the consolation rounds.

Canon-Mac reaches semifinals

Canon-McMillan burst to a 30-6 lead and cruised to a 42-23 victory over Delaware Valley in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey Friday afternoon.

Canon-McMillan (22-2) had six pins: Colton Shorts (103), defending state champion Connor Schram (112), Solomon Chishko (130), Dario Dobbin (135), Nick Catalano (145), who got his in eight seconds; and Alex Campbell (215).

C-H eliminated

One point.
That's what Chartiers-Houston was searching for over the final few bouts of its consolation dual meet against Biglerville in the PIAA Class AA Team Tournament in Hershey.
A pin instead of a technical fall, a technical fall instead of a major decision, a major decision instead of a decision.
That point proved elusive for the Bucs, who lost to Biglerville by tiebreaking criteria, 29-28, and was eliminated from the tournament.
Both teams won seven bouts but Biglerville had two pins, Chartiers-Houstone one.

Canon-McMillan's Connor Schram, front, works on Nazareth's Adam Delgado during their 119-pound bout in Thursday's PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament first-round dual meet in Hershey. Schram won a 15-9 deicison and C-M took a 26-25 win over Nazareth.

C-M wins thriller

Canon-McMillan won a thrilling 26-25 victory over Nazareth in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament in the Giant Center in Hershey Thursday.
The two most important outcomes of the dual meet came at 189, where Ian Binotto decisioned Nazareth's Ben Bradley 4-1; and at 152, where Mark Dami only gave up a 5-3 decision to Nazareth's Wyatt Miller. Nazareth trailed by 10 points at the time and Dami's loss still allowed C-M to hold a seven-point lead. The Big Macs forfeited the final weight to Ryan Krecker and that was that.

Canon-McMillan takes on Delaware Valley in today's quarterfinals (2 p.m.).
