Powerade
Dalton Macri pulled off a miracle finish in the next-to-last bout of the PowerAde Christmas Wrestling Tournament. Macri, a senior at C-M, hit a five-point move in the final 12 seconds to turn a 6-3 deficit into an 8-6 victory and the 126-pound title.
Macri was named Outstanding Wrestler.
His win touched off a thunderous roar from the crowd and helped the Big Macs finish in fourth place in the team standings behind Franklin Regional, Latrobe and Parkland.
Chance Marsteller of Kennard-Dale became the fifth four-time champion in this event when he defeated Noah Wilps of Chartiers Valley by technical fall, 17-1, in the 170 finals. Marsteller gave the medal to a young boy who was at each of his bouts during the tournament.
Devin Brown (106), Spencer Lee (113), Tyler Smith (132), Michael Kemerer (138), and Josh Shields (152) each won titles for Franklin Regional.
Latrobe had three champions: Luke Pletcher (120), Dom Scalise (160) and Zach Zavatsky (182).

McGuffey headed to Double-A
McGuffey High School's wrestling team, which has been competing up in classification, will return to a Double-A schedule next season. The Highlanders, competing in Section 4-A in Class AAA, will begin the new schedule for the 2014-15 season.
McGuffey will try to keep its rivalry matches with Waynesburg, Trinity and Canon-McMillan. The enrollment numbers for McGuffey have been steadily declining over the years and athletic director Ed Dalton said it's the best move for the program.
"We made the decision a few weeks ago," Dalton said. We talked it over with the coaches. We talked it over with the board. We talked it over with (head coach Mark Caffrey). Our enrollment from our heyday has gone from 270 to 120."Dalton said the school only had two home section dual meets this season, a the trend in the WPIA now.
"We understand the pitfalls," he said. But we have to be proactive. We'll still wrestle good teams and create a competitive schedule."

Chishko out of Powerade
Solomon Chishko, a defending state champion for Canon-McMillan, will miss the PowerAde Christmas Wrestling Tournament because of a knee injury. Chishko, who won the Class AAA 145-pound title last year, hurt the knee in a semifinal match against Micah Jordan of St. Paris, Ohio, at the Ironman tournament.
Chishko missed the 2012013 regular season with a fractured elbos. He wrestled in 11 bouts, all in the postseason, without a loss.

Brown eligible for Franklin Regional
Devin Brown was ruled eligible for the 2013-14 wrestling season by the PIAA board of control Wednesday. Brown, who along with Spencer Lee, transferred from Saegertown to Franklin Regional this year.
The Brown transfer was challenged by Saegertown and the WPIAL denied Brown eligibility. Lee's transfer was not challenged as his family moved into the district after his father got a job at Carnegie Mellon.
Brown won the Class AA 106-pound title last year and his inclusion on Franklin Regional's team makes it the favorite to win the state team and individual titles this year.

Another loss in wrestling
Wrestling’s international governing body announced Tuesday that men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman will each lose a weight class between light and heavyweight ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
FILA had previously ruled to cut the men’s divisions from seven to six so it could add two women’s weight classes, thus ensuring a 6-6-6 split among the three disciplines.
The move toward increased gender equity came as FILA worked with the IOC over the past year to ensure wrestling remained on the Olympic program. The sport was dropped from the list of Olympic core sports in February, but was reinstated in September after changes intended to modernize wrestling.
The changes will go into effect on Jan. 1.

Chishko, Macri place at Ironman Tournament
Solomon Chishko and Dalton Macri, both from Canon-McMillan High School, placed in their respective weight classes at the Ironman Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Walsh Jesuit High School.Chishko, a defending state champion from Canon-McMillan High School, placed sixth at 145 pounds. Chishko, a senior, lost in the semifinals to Micah Jordan of Graham St. Paris High School in Ohio, 7-1. Jordan is a three-time Ohio state champion and is headed to Ohio State next fall. Chishko, a Virginia Tech recruit, then forfeited the consolation finals bouts because of a sore knee. It was not considered serious.
Macri, a senior state runner-up last season, won a 9-7 decision over Dom Forys of North Allegheny in the 126-pound third-place match.
Freshman Spencer Lee of Franklin Regional easily won his 113-pound weight class, dominating Anthony Bosco of Marmion Academy in Illinois, 10-0, in the finals.

That's more like it
A large crowd, an interesting match filled with unexpected results and a down-to-the wire finish.
That was what the McGuffey-Trinity dual meet had Wednesday night and it brought back memories of when these two teams were powers in the WPIAL.
About 1,000 people showed up for the bout and little known Austin Fife, a 6-6 sophomore who was going to skip wrestling to work out for football, clinched the bout with a pin of Ryan Steinstraw at heavyweight. It was totally unexpected and set the Hillers' fans off to a victory celebration when it happened.
Tristan Buxton had another of those unexpected wins, trailing 1-0 with 37 seconds left when he took McGuffey's Gage Nicolella down and pinned him right before the buzzer. Finally, Robert West was frustrated and appeared headed for a regular decision until he hit a headlock and pinned Liam McElhoes with four seconds remaining.
McGuffey made an impressive comeback in the match, trailing at one time by 14 but taking a 1-point lead after Nathan Whipkey's pin with four bouts to go.
This match followed another close and exciting match last year, when Trinity won late, 36-30. For too long, this dual meet has not held much excitement or good wrestling. The last two have been well wrestled, well attended and well worth watching.

Some thoughts about the start of the season
So far, Canon-McMillan has not missed a beat, winning five dual meets in the Greenville Duals and knocking off General McLane in a non-section match Monday night. The Big Macs, who have won five of the possible six state team tournament titles over the past three years, will get a better read in the coming weeks with matches against McGuffey and Waynesburg, and the biggie, Powerade. This weekend's Ironman tournament, which CM is participating in, includes Franklin Regional.
Jefferson-Morgan had a good showing at the Gateway Tournament, finishing fourth and landing two champions in Brendan Howard at 113 and James Miller at 138. Ryan Zalar made it to the 160 finals but fell to Devin Austin of Penn Trafford, 2-1. And heavyweight Ian Wolfe made it to the finals, where Shane Kuhn of Kiski pinned him.
One interesting final came at 126, where Dom Forys of North Allegheny had no trouble with Justin Patrick of the Kiski School, 7-2. Patrick was top seed and Forys 2.
The biggest news from the Chartiers-Houston Tournament was not about who was there but who was not. Nick Gavazzi of Charleroi missed the event with a sore shoulder. Josh Kuslock was a nice surprise for Chartiers-Houston, winning the 120-pound title; and Nico Brown of Beth-Center had a good effort in a runner-up effort at 171. Peters Township got five to the finals and had two champions. Lukas Cervenak won at heavyweight and Phil Mary at 126.
This stat from Wrestlingreport.com: there are 690 wrestlers who have won 100 or more matches in their career in WPIAL history. The leader is Dane Johnson of Shady Side Academy with 182. Two of his teammates, Geoff Alexander and Philip Elias are among four wrestlers tied at 172. The other two are Ashtin Primus and Donnie Ament of Connellsville.
