Powerade notes, Day 1

Last year, it was Cody Wiercioch.
This year, it might be Solomon Chishko.
Wiercioch burst on to the wrestling scene at last year's Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament, winning the 152-pound title as a freshman and being named Outstanding Wrestler. Wiercioch went on to win the state title at that weight.
Chishko, a frehman from Canon-McMillan, made it to today's semifinals after a 3-1 overtime win against Brandon Choate of Blue Mountain, who finished third at 119 in last year's PIAA championships. Chishko wrestles Colton Fought of Benton in the semifinals.

Remember the name Chance Marsteller.
The freshman from Kennard Dale High School, near York, looks like Cary Kolat, wrestles like Cary Kolat and is trained by Cary Kolat. He breezed had a pin, decision and technical fall to make it to the semifinals against Casey Kent of La Salle College.

The best weight class in the tournament is 160, where Wiercioch, Burrell's Travis McKillop and Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Jason Luster are in the semifinals. Ouch.

Canon-McMillan's Colton Shorts is having a great tournament, pinning his three opponents in a combined 5:32.

Trinity was forced to withdraw from the tournament because some of its wrestlers came down with a skin irritation.

Merry Christmas

Big Mac attacks

It's still early in the season but after watching Canon-McMillan rip up North Allegheny Thursday, it's hard to see any team stopping them in the WPIAL. The Big Macs have strength through the lineup with the lightweights being the strength of the team.

Colton Shorts is blossoming now that he is at the right weight, 103. He wrestled up a lot last year because the Big Macs had a state champion in the making in Connor Schram at 103. Dalton Macri is in the same position this season, stuck in the same weight class as Shorts.

With so many strong wrestlers, it's easy to overlook Nick Catalano, who has put on weight and is much stronger. He is at 152 now, but will settle at 145 for the tournaments.

And Cody Klempay is a beast, adding 30 pounds without losing any quickness or agility.

How well the Big Macs do in the state team tournament will depend on how well their middleweights perform. Zach Thomas, Ian Binotto and Mark Dami need strong performances if the PIAA trophy is to end up in C-M's hands.

Notes

West Virginia junior Colin Johnston, a state champion from Canon-McMillan High School, will sit out this season with a shoulder injury. Johnston had surgery on the shoulder and is expected to take a redshirt. He was 21-4 last season, including 5-1 in the EWL and 10-3 in dual matches. Johnston is wrestling at 133 pounds.

The Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament headlines a list of holiday tournaments next week. Powerade will be held at Canon-McMillan, Dec. 29-30 with the usual impressive lineup of schools and wrestlers. West Mifflin, Southmoreland, Wheeling Park Dulas, Manheium and Brockway are also on the schedule.

Canon-McMillan freshman Solomon Chisko had an impressive run in the North Canton Holiday Tournament, breezing through the 135-pound weight class with three shutouts and two pins for the gold medal. Defending state champion Connor Schram had three pins, a technical fall and major decision while winning at 112. Nick Catalano, third in the PIAA last season, won at 135; anf Cody Klempay took heavyweight.

Former Trinity High School wrestler Grant Lowther is wrestling for Washington & Jefferson College and is competing at 125 pounds.

Waynesburg University is off to a 5-2-1 start to the season and Nick Garber is ranked 10th by d3wrestling.com at 125 pounds. Garber, a 141-pound senior from Waynesburg High School, is 9-1. Waynesburg battles Penn State-New Kensington Jan. 7 and will host Washington & Jefferson Jan. 20.

Buzz Walters to be honored

John “Buzz” Walters, a hall of fame wrestling coach from West Greene High School, is going to be honored at Wednesday’s dual meet against Bentworth in Rogersville.
The match begins at 7 p.m.
Walters compiled a 300-143-4 record as Pioneers’ head coach. He took over as coach in the second year of the program’s existence and stayed for 29 years. He also spent two seasons at Beth-Center and was an assistant and head coach at Clay-Battelle High School in Blacksville, W.Va.
A graduate of Mapletown High School, Walters had 28 winning seasons at West Greene and was named WPIAL Class AA Coach of the Year in 1974. He was inducted in the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1996.

No Trinity-Canon-Mac match

One of the casualties of the WPIAL's decision to shorten the competition schedule was the loss of the wrestling match between Trinity and Canon-McMillan. That came to an end for two reasons and neither school could do much about it.

The first was the WPIAL's recent realignment that separated the two teams. Canon-McMillan competes in Section 4A, with USC, Montour, Char Valley, Moon and West Allegheny; and Trinity is in 4B, with McGuffey, Peters Township, Waynesburg, Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Park. Commitments to the four other teams in the section and inclusion in traditional tournaments such as Powerade, Virginia Duals, Eastern Area and others ate up a lot of scheduling points for both teams.

The second reason was a commitment by Canon-McMillan, before the realignment, to compete against North Allegheny in a non-section match. Canon-McMillan didn't want to go back on its handshake agreement with NA this season to fit in a match against Trinity.

Even if room was found for the rivalry, which has severely tailed off over the past few years, it most likely would not have been the final dual meet of the regular season, its customary spot.

Canon-McMillan lost its annual dual meet against McGuffey for similar reasons.

The WPIAL obviously didn't know - or didn't care - that this realignment might end one of high school wrestling's longest annual competition. It could have easily swapped Upper St. Clair for Trinity, but failed to do so.

The other unspoken part of this situation is that the Trinity-CM rivalry was in decline. It wasn't competitive and the lopsided victories of the recent Big Mac teams over a Trinity squad that struggled to fill weight classes made for an uncomfortable night in the gym for both sides. Those old enough to remember the days when Dave Cook and John Abajace were the lightning rod coaches for this event that stuffed the gym and made for great entertainment will understand how far this rivalry has fallen.

Trinity High School welcomed its third Hall of Fame class Saturday at a dinner at the Ameriocan Legion in Washington. Wrestler Ed DeWitte was among the members. DeWitte was Trinity's first PIAA State wrestling champion, winning the WPIAL and PIAA titles at 145 pounds.

DeWitte attended Pitt and went undefeated in dual meets for three years. In 1956, he won the Eastern Championship, the Wilkes College Championship and the NCAA National Championship. DeWitte continued wrestling after college, winning the Wilkes Open Championship in 1957 and 1958, the latter title earning him tournament MVP honors.

In 1960, his wrestling expertise landed him a spot on the United States Olympic Team that competed in Rome. In 1962, he won both the gold medal and MVP award at the US Army Far-West AAU Championships. DeWitte was elected to the Washington-Greene County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

The other honorees included Blanca D'Hoedt Erickson (track), Brian Kimutis (football, baseball), Alex Leckie (rifle), Tim O'Connor (football, basketball), Carl Trusler (contributor), and the 1978 track team (WPIAL champs, PIAA runner-up).
