Two wins at Classic
The Pennsylvania and WPIAL teams pulled off a rare doubleplay in winning both dual meets in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic Sunday at Pitt.
In the feature dual meet, Pennsylvania defeated the United States for only the second time in 11 years, 27-18.
Travis Shaffer of Derry, who was originally selected for the WPIAL team but moved into Neff’s spot after the injury, was named Outstanding Wrestler for Pennsylvania with a 7-2 decision over Hunter Stieber of Monroeville, Ohio, at 135 pounds. Stieber was 203-2 and won four state titles.
Mike Ottinger of Parkland might have had the most impressive win with a 6-4 decision over Destin McCauley of Apple Valley, Minn. McCauley had a 286-6 record and five state titles.
Logan Storley, a six-time state champion from Webster, S.D., won a 3-1 decision over John Staudenmayer of Plymouth Whitemarsh at 171.
Nico Megaludis of Franklin Regional capped the match with a 9-3 decision over Conor Youtsey of Mason, Mich., at 125. The weights were predrawn.
The WPIAL made Classic history with the first shutout, a 42-0 win over Michigan.
Micahel Innes of Chartiers-Houston, added just Friday as a replacement, was one of six local winners. Innes decisioned Brian Gibbs of Bedford, 5-3, at 140 pounds.
Waynesburg’s Derrick Nelson nipped Brandon Fifield of Leslie, 3-2, at 119; Canon-McMillan’s Nick Catalano edged Matt Frisch of Oxford, 2-1, at 145; South Fayette’s Nick Carr stopped Dan Fleet or Lowell, 6-1 at 152; Trinity’s Kyle McWreath beat Anthony Abro, 2-1, at 189; and Beth-Center’s Jeff Tarley dropped Cody Wolever of Hesperia, 6-1, at heavyweight.

Innes added to Classic
Michael Innes, a senior at Chartiers-Houston, has been added to the WPIAL team for Sunday's Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic. Innes' inclusion was because of an injury to Dan Neff of Solanco, who was ompeting on the Pa. Team. Derry's Travis Shaffer, who was on the WPIAL Team, was moved up to the Pa. Team and Innes inserted in Shaffer's spot.
Got that?
Innes has a 132-29 record and is a two-time WPIAL champion. Shaffer has a 147-22 record and a state title to his credentials.

Penn State wins team title
Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA – Penn State, led by 184-pound champion Quentin Wright, won its first NCAA wrestling title in 58 years Saturday night by outpointing Cornell.
The Nittany Lions finished with 107 1/2 points to Cornell’s 93 1/2.
“In my mind, I’ve been wanting to be a part of a national championship program since I started at Iowa State as a freshman in 1998,” Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said. “Having not been able to do that for so many years until here we are no and it’s finally happened.”
Wright began the tournament as the ninth seed and won his first national title with a 5-2 decision over Lehigh’s Rob Hamlin.
“It’s a great feeling,” Wright said. “It hasn’t hit me yet. I just got out of the match. But it’s going to get better for a long time.”
Nebraska senior Jordan Burroughs, (36-0), one of five wrestlers to finish the tournament undefeated on the year and the first two-time national champ in program history, dominated the 165 weight class. He took the championship match with an 11-3 victory against Oklahoma’s Tyler Caldwell.
In the only pin of the night, Arizona State’s Bubba Jenkins, who spent four years at Penn State before he transferred, dispatched Nittany Lions’ freshman David Taylor in 4:14 at 157 pounds.
Jenkins said he left Penn State because of Sanderson.
“He didn’t think I was good enough or the right kid to win it at that weight class or any weight class. I wanted to go 149. But he had other ideas. And he got rid of me. And one man’s trash is a whole country’s treasure,” Jenkins said.
Cornell’s Kyle Dake allowed his first point of the tournament in the final against Penn State’s Frank Molinaro, but it hardly mattered as the Big Red sophomore dominated and won his second national title with an 8-1 decision.
At 197 pounds, fourth-seeded Dustin Kilgore (38-2) became the first national champion in program history when he pinned Oklahoma State’s Clayton Foster in 4:56 despite the fact he trailed 5-1 at the time.
In the opening match of the night, Arizona State’s Anthony Robles took a 7-1 decision from Iowa sophomore Matt McDonough. Robles, who was born without a right leg, got the only takedown in the first period of the match and worked a pair of tilts to secure five back points.
“I had a lot of butterflies going out there.,” said Robles, who admitted he’s most likely done as a competitive wrestler but wants to remain involved in one facet or another. “This year I think that was the biggest difference in my wrestling, was my mental game. Going into every match I was real relaxed, real calm. But before that, before this match, it was nothing but butterflies. I felt like I was going throw up, I was so scared I almost started crying.
“But it’s just the atmosphere. It’s the true athletes that are able to just overcome that.”
Sophomore Jordan Oliver (29-0) out of Oklahoma State beat Boise State senior Jordan Hochstrasser for the second time this year as he captured the 133-pound title with an 8-4 decision.
Kellen Russell kept the undefeated streak alive through the first three weights as the Michigan junior took a 3-2 decision over Cal-Poly junior Borislav Novachkov at 141 pounds.
Iowa State’s Jonathan Reader finished a perfect season with a 10-3 decision over Stanford junior Nick Amuchaslegui. Reader, the 68th national champion in program history, went 38-0 and was a four-time All-American.
“Last night I was disappointed with the way I performed (in the semifinals),” Reader said. “I was a little anxious and excited to wrestle. But I came out tonight and made Iowa State proud.”
In the final bout of the night, Lehigh’s Zach Rey (34-1) avenged his only loss of the season with a 2-1 decision in which riding time as the difference, over American’s Ryan Flores.
The three-day event drew a record attendance of 104,260.

Lions still lead
This update from GoPSUsports.com
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team remained in first place after the second session of the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia. Head coach Cael Sanderson's crew closed out day one at the Wells Fargo Center by posting a perfect 8-0 record in session two and own a superb 15-1 record at the conclusion of day one of the event.
All seven of Penn State's seeded wrestlers won their second round matches and picked up one win in consolation action. Sophomore All-American Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) and junior heavyweight Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) each came up big as ninth-seeds, upsetting their eighth-seeded opponents to help spur the Lions on to the perfect session.
The Nittany Lions lead the team race with 30.5 points while Cornell is in second with 29.0. Iowa and Oklahoma State are tied for third with 25.0 each and American University is in fifth with 23.5.
Penn State came out roaring thanks to a sudden victory win and key bonus point victories. Sophomore All-American Andrew Long (Creston, Iowa), the third seed at 133, survived a four-point flurry from Minnesota's David Thorn and notched a takedown in sudden victory to post a 7-5 (sv) win to move into tomorrow's quarterfinals where he will face 11th-seed Scotti Sentes of Central Michigan. True freshman Andrew Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), the sixth-seed at 141, picked up yet another bonus point for Penn State, posting a strong 13-4 major over 11th-seed Michael Mariarcher of American. Combined with a first round pin this morning, Alton has picked up three bonus points for Penn State. He is also set for the quarterfinals tomorrow morning where he will meet third-seed Borislav Novachkov of Cal Poly.
Two-time All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.), the second-seed at 149, continued to roll in the post-season. Molinaro notched a solid 6-3 win over Virginia's Derek Valenti and moves into the quarterfinals tomorrow where he will take on seventh-seed Mario Mason of Rutgers. The three points scored by Valenti are the first scored against Molinaro in post-season action (Big Tens or NCAAs). Red-shirt freshman David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), the third-seed at 157, was dominant once again, posting a 20-3 technical fall over Northern Iowa's David Bonin at the 5:49 mark. Taylor used three takedowns and four three-point near fall points to roll to the victory and pick up 1.5 bonus points (giving him 2.5 for the tournament. Taylor will meet Iowa's Derek St. John, the No. 6 seed, in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.
Red-shirt freshman Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) then used a second period takedown and a late scramble to avoid a reversal to post an important 5-3 win over Minnesota's Scott Glasser at 174. Ruth, the No. 2 seed, will take on No. 7 seed Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Wright bettered his Big Ten Championship win over Minnesota's Kevin Steinhaus with a dominating 8-4 win here in Philadelphia. Wright, the ninth seed, dominated the eight-seed Steinhaus with two takedowns in the third period to roll to the win. Wright will now meet top-seeded Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.
Wade, the ninth-seed, avenged a loss in the Big Ten Championship to eighth-seed Tony Nelson of Minnesota by rolling to a 4-1 win in his second round battle. Wade used a takedown and a reversal to dominate the match and move into the quarterfinals tomorrow morning against top-seed Zach Rey of Lehigh. Senior Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.) rebounded from a first round loss this morning to handle Oregon State's Jason Lara 6-1 in the first round of consolations. Pataky used two takedowns, an escape and riding time to get the win and move into tomorrow morning's consolation action where he will face Sean Boyle of Michigan.

CM sends five to semifinals
Canon-McMillan produced the wrestling equivalent of Michigan basketball’s Fab Five.
Michigan’s Fab Five, all freshmen, brought the Wolverines to the NCAA championship games. Interestingly, that group never won a championship.
The Big Macs put on a dazzling display in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships Friday afternoon, sending five wrestlers into today’s (8 a.m.) semifinals and taking a major step to securing the team tournament title.
Win followed win in one of the most impressive run by any Big Macs team since four made it to the semifinals in 1992.
Colton Shorts, a 103-pound junior, Connor Schram, a 112-pound sophomore and defending state champion; Solomon Chishko, a 130-pound freshman, Nick Catalano, a 145-pound senior, and Cody Klempay, a junior heavyweight, have the chance to produced the greatest wrestling season in one of the most prestigious programs in the sport.
There has never been more than four state champions from any team participating in this tournament, which has been held ever year since 1938. Among the teams that have had four are North Allegheny in 1990, Lock Haven in 1961, Waynesburg in 1943 and Clearfield in 1941.

First day notes
The first two rounds of this tournament went off with hardly a ripple. That won't last. Arguably, the biggest upset of the first round was Brett Harner of Norristown dropping a 3-2 decision to Geno Morelli of Dubois at 152. Harner had a 52-6 record coming in and finished eighth last season at 140.
That calm won't last. At 130 pounds, Canon-McMillan's Solomon Chishko, Cam Throckmorton of South Western and Zach Horan of Nazareth will eventually battle through each other to reach the finals. Horan is a three-time runner-up and Throckmorton was fifth last season at 125 and a three-time medalist.
At 103-AAA, Billy Rappo of Council Rock South and Brett Marino of Liberty meet in the quarterfinals with the winner probably getting Colton Shorts of Canon-McMillan in the semifinals.
Connor Schram of Canon-McMillan could run into Brashear's Godwin Nyama in the semifinals. Nyama is the third qualifier from the City League and could become the first medalist if he continues his strong wrestling.
Kyle McWreath of Trinity suffered his first loss of the season, 3-1 to Brandon Clark of Methacton in the first round. He bounced back with a 3-0 decision over Dave Quakenbos of Red Lion in the first round of consolations.
Charleroi's Josh Kwasny didn't get the greatest of first-round bouts in the Class AA first round, getting pinned by Michael Racciato of Pen Argyl in 4:42. Racciato was third at 130 last season. But Kwasny showed determination, rebounding with a 7-4 decision over Riley Smith of Fort Leboeuf in the first round of consolations. Kwasny has had a nice comeback after weight problems derailed him last season.
Corey Garry of Fort Cherry had a nice 3-2 win over Aaron Schultz of Towanda in the first round. Garry is a little underweight for a heavyweight. His opponent in the quarterfinals, Joel Yahner of Brockway, will be a challenge. Yahner is 34-0 and a Northwest champion. Garry was third in the Southwest.
Only four of the 28 local wrestlers who made it here were eliminated on the first day, a pretty strong showing, considering some drew some tough opening-round opponents. There are 15 left in the winners' bracket and seven in the consolation rounds.
Brashear's Godwin Nyama became the first City League wrestler to win a bout in the state tournament when he decisioned Dylan Steffenino of Upper Perkiomen 8-4 inn the 112-pound first round in Class AAA.

PIAA local results
As I've done in the past, I will update each local wrestler's result at the conclusion of the session and also have who he wrestles in the following round, if applicable. I also will try to add a couple comments on the bouts.
The state predictions are coming soon.
Here is the link to the state brackets.

Notes from the weekend
An interesting question for area wrestling fans is this: If Canon-McMillan, with its five champions and six qualifiers to the state tournament, happens to win the team tournament title in Hershey this weekend, which team is the true team champion? Canon-Mac or Central Dauphin, which captured the first team title in last month's tournament.
Just askin'.
Possibly, the best thing that happened to Cody Wiercioch's chances of repeating as a PIAA champion was his overtime loss to Burrell's Travis McKillop in the 160-pound finals in Johnstown. Wiercioch, a sophomore from Charleroi, will be furious about the loss just as McKillop was when he fell to Wiercioch in the WPIAL finals. That motivation is more than anything the coaching staff at Charleroi could think up to prepare Wiercioch this week had he beaten McKillop Saturday in Johnstown.
I think McKillop put it best when he said if the two wrestlers were on the same team, one at 152 and the other at 160, they would both be state champions.
I always appreciate a wrestler who has the maturity and composure to rally from a bad start to a tournament. This week's award goes to Zach Swarrow of Beth-Center, who was upended in the first round of the regional tournament in Johnstown and won five straight bouts to finish third at 103. That's impressive.
There is absolutely no rational reason why the Southwest should not have at least one more qualifier to the state tournament in Class AAA. The number of qualifiers are determined on the percentage of schools. Because the City League left and a couple more schools dropped, Class AAA lost a fourth qualifier. Check out the number of fourth-place finishers in Class AAA on this blog and imagine how many would medal at states. I don't see one who wouldn't.

Rands DQ'd at WPIALs
Neal Rands, who had just received medical clearance to wrestle on Wednesday, saw his scholastic career come to an end in an unexpected way Thursday night.
Rands, a senior from Ringgold High School who had passed out in his Section 2-AAA finals bout against Hempfield’s Dante Nania last week, had breathing difficulties in his 215-pound bout against Ean Villemain of Indiana in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA Championships at Canon-McMillan.
Rands needed two injury time-outs during the match, and appeared to be in some distress each time. Following the second stoppage and holding an 8-0 lead over Villemain, Rands decided to default.
The official wanted Rands to shake hands with Villemain, but Rands was trying to leave the mat. He said something to the official that resulted in a flagrant misconduct and his disqualification from the tournament.
“He was on some medication, and he was feeling sick,” said Ringgold head coach Bob Bove. “It’s been a frustrating year for him. Every time he tried to come back, something happened.”
After Rands passed out in the section tournament, he needed to get a doctor’s release to continue wrestling. That didn’t come until Wednesday evening after a trip to UPMC-Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.
Canon-McMillan had a strong day, advancing eight of nine wrestlers, including defending state champion Connor Schram at 112.
McGuffey’s Christian Whipkey had two pins, the first over Keith Berback of McKeesport in 1:50 and the second over fourth-seed Zach Reges of Butler in 5:09.
Becky Barker, a junior from West Mifflin, became the first female to compete in this tournament. She was pinned by Christ Olszewski of Hampton in 5:00 in the preliminary round and eliminated from the tournament.
