Duquesne blows it

How is it that an institution of educated individuals can be so clueless about handling difficult athletic situations? Duquesne University decided to cut four men's athletic programs, including wrestling, then tried to call it a retrenching.
Please try not to insult our intelligence when dealing with such unpleasant moves. Wrestling fans, in particular, are not falling for this crap because they've seen it happen before.
This was nothing more than an effort to come into compliance with Title IX, the civil rights legislation that requires an equal footing for men and women who participate in college athletics. Unfortunately, no one won with Duquesne's situation.
Male athletes were dealt a blow with the loss of swimming, baseball, golf and wrestling. Those athletes will most likely transfer to other programs after this school year. The coaches have little choice but to leave, too.
Women gain nothing other than a slight increase in funding from the revenue saved by cutting the men's sports. It's not a great day for Title IX advocates because the university's sleight of hand does not benefit women or women's programs.
Ah, but here's the rub. Duquesne has dramatically increased the percentage of women participating in athletics without the school having to add any programs. That's because there are fewer male athletes. Let's pop the cork on that, huh?
It's addition through subtraction, and that's not the intent of the legislation.
Of course, Duquesne handled this poorly, using a press release to make the announcement. How cold. If the university is going to squash the dreams of a hundred athletes, it could at least try be more compassionate. Put a live person in front of the microphone for a little gruel and sympathy.
Again, you are dealing with academicians, not public relation experts. They rarely get it right. Their reaction was to say nothing.
Athletic director Greg Amodio should have made himself available to the press, the athletes who were getting their dreams destroyed and the coaches whose careers were disintegrating. When he finally did comment, it was two days after a chorus of criticism streamed down from the media.
Just once, I would to see an administrator come out and say what everyone knows. "Look, we don't like cutting these programs but we want to help our other programs survive and we want to be in compliance with Title IX because we feel it's important."
That would be the smart thing to do.
And that's exactly why it would never occur to Duquesne's administration that this would be the best way to handle this.

Wrestlic Classic team

The United States team has been selected for this year's Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic. The Pennsylvania team will be picked following the individual state tournament in Hershey in March. The classic will be held Saturday, March 20 at Pitt's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse. The WPIAL will wrestle New York in the opening dual meet.

Team tournament notes

The seeding for the WPIAL Team Tournament was released today and there were not many surprises. In Class AAA, Connellsville got the top seed, followed by Canon-McMillan, Penn Trafford and Kiski. The only surprise there was Penn Trafford's win over Kiski in the Section 1 finals. I didn't have the Warriors ranked and it's surprising they beat Kiski.
Canon-McMillan is the second seed and might have Michael Hull back in time for the first round. He missed the Section 5 tournament because he was in Florida preparing for an international football All-Star game. The Big Macs should reach the finals against Connesllville.
Burgettstown shook up Class AA by beating previously undefeated Chartiers-Houston in the Section 1 finals. That put the Bucs in the upper bracket with Burrell and Yough. Burgettstown and Shady Side Academy are in the bottom bracket. Shady Side forfeited three weight classes against Burrell in the Section 3 finals. Yikes. Burrell should win this but I am less sure today than I was at the beginning of the season.
I had to smile at Joe Throckmorton's comment about Pittsburgh Central Catholic after Waynesburg lost in the Section 4 finals. "They recruited well," he said.
It was also strange to see the number of forfeits that occurred in the consolation matches. Coaches didn't seem to see a need for the bouts to be wrestled once the outcome was assured. Wonder if they thought about the fans who bought tickets to see the competition. If that's the case, why wrestle for third and fourth place?

I hate this part

Something called the Section Team Tournament gets under way tomorrow night to determine the section championships in Class AAA and Class AA. Four teams at eight sites will battle for the title.
Sounds like it might be a highly competitive and exciting event.
It won't be.
Nothing is on the line for these matches other than seeding in the WPIAL Team Tournament. The four teams at each of these sites advance to the WPIAL Team Tournament, which runs the first week of February. Those teams lucky enough to make it to the finals spend the following week in the PIAA Team Tournament.
When did wrestling become some a team event? When did the team portion of the season so intrude on wrestlers that many don't even compete after the team season because of the long layoff before the section tournaments?
Look at the down time for a wrestler who is not in the team tournament. The last regular season dual meets were held six days ago. It will be about a month before the section tournaments begin.
This is crazy.
The reason the team tournaments exist is to make money for the WPIAL and PIAA, to sell tickets for these events. No one is against these organizations making a profit, just so long as it's not in a long, drawn-out and utterly meaningless event as the team tournament.
How do I know it's meaningless.
The PIAA will crown a team champion in another 2 1/2 weeks. Then, at the individual tournament in Hershey, a new team champion is crowned and those wrestlers carry a trophy through the arena before getting their picture taken. What an insult to the team that had to battle through the state tournament a month before.
If the WPIAL wants a team tournament, fine. Take the section champions and hold the event over a Friday and Saturday, bill it as a wrestling extravaganza and hold it at some large school site. Hold the PIAA event the following week. Time used up in the season would be a week and a half from the last regular season dual meet.
I've ranted about this before and I keep saying this will be my last one. But I find the urge to criticize overwhelming.

Canon-McMillan's Nick Catalano has Trinity's Jeff Miller caught in a spladle during their 135-pound bout. The Big Macs won 58-16.

Connor Schram (top) of Canon-McMillan works to turn Jacob Sochor of Trinity in the 112-pound bout Wednesday. Schram pinned Sochor to help Canon-McMillan to a 58-16 win.

A strange night

Canon-McMillan rolled over Trinity in the regular-season finale and it wasn't a surprise. The Hillers were without three starters - Mike Standish (knee), Chanc Spiker (flu) and J.D. George (Hvy) - and that hurt. With them, the outcome would not have changed but the matches would have been better. Still, Trinity looks to be on the right track in rebuilding the program. And the Big Macs look like a trip to Hershey is a distinct possibility.

Charleroi earned its first entry into the team tournament since the 2004-05 season and the Cougars did not even wrestle a section match. The reason was Mt. Pleasant beat Jeannette, causing a three-way tie for second place. Charleroi won the tiebreaker (most bout wins in the matches).

Peters Township got into the team tournament for the first time since 1998. But the Indians' scorekeeper originally called our newspaper and told us Upper St. Clair won the match. Later, head coach Jason Carpetta called to say a mistake had been made and Peters Township did indeed beat USC. Congratulations.

News and notes

Canon-McMillan and Trinity will continue one of the WPIAL's most longstanding rivalries when the two teams meet Wednesday night in Canonsburg. You have to be impressed with the job first-year coach Mike Marino has done with the Hillers. Anyone who was at last year's match had to leave with a sick feeling. C-M won 51-15 but the bad part was the Hillers were not competitive and forfeited four weight classes. It was obvious the program was spinning out of control. If the series is to remain heated, then Trinity has to become better and the program has stepped up this season.

What makes a good rivalry is the capability of either team winning. When that doesn't happen, it stops being a rivalry. Just look at the Steelers-Browns rivalry. It was non-existent because Pittsburgh won 19 of the last 20 games. Steelers fans didn't mind the wins but the game will have new meaning next year because Cleveland won the second meeting this season.

Trinity has good group of juniors coming through but does not have enough fire power to beat the Big Macs. This could be one of Canon-McMillan's best teams since Chris Mary took over as coach a decade ago. If the Hillers can bring the program to that point, too, just think how much more exciting this dual meet will become.

------------

The Tri-County Wrestling Tournament has made a nice rebound from two years ago, when the competition level was awful, brackets were full of scratches and some coaches were calling for the discontinuing of the event.

Now, it is a good mid-season tournament that had a lot of competitive matches. The talent level has surged with the inclusion of Fayette County teams and the crowds are growing.

One smart move was holding the event at Charleroi, a midway point in the Tri-County. The other was putting the organization logistics in the hands of Frank Vulcano, who has experience running numerous WPIAL events. There were a lot of hard feelings by fans last year when they ran into problems with the schedule.

---------------

Injuries and sickness have hurt Fort Cherry's wrestling team this season. Heavyweight Corey Garry broke his hand during practice over the Christmas break and he is not expected back until the postseason. Gary Kiefer came down with the flu for the Tri-County Tournament and lost eight pounds overnight. He was forced to pull out.

It's been a struggle finding lighter weights for the program, which is unusual. Most programs have problems finding heavyweights. Fort Cherry forfeited the first three weight classes in a three-point loss to Keystone Oaks. That all but devastated the Rangers' chances for the team postseason.

News and notes

Tri-County Wrestling Tournament

The Tri-CADA TRi-County Wrestling Tournament will be held this weekend at Charleroi High School. Seven wrestlers who won titles last season are expected to return, including Nate Gaffney, a defending state champion from Connellsville.
Wrestling begins 4:30 p.m. on Friday and semifinals are 10 a.m. Saturday. Finals are 6 p.m. that night.
Twenty-one teams from the three county area will be competing, including Connellsville, last year's team champion. Waynesburg was second and Canon-McMillan third.
Freshman sensation Cody Wiercioch of Charleroi will compete at 152 pounds.

Westmoreland County tournament
It was a mess at last weekend's Westmoreland County Wrestling Tournament. The first night was washed out because of inclement weather but tournament officials decided to run the entire tournament on Saturday.
The finals, which were set for 7 p.m., did not begin until 9:40 p.m. and did not finish until 12:15 a.m., Sunday. Because of a five-bout limit for any wrestler in one day, some consolation finals were awarded on a point system.
Franklin Regional junior Nico Megaludis and Derry junior Travis Shaffer each won their third title in this tournament.

Sherlock lost for season
Sam Sherlock, a defending state champion from West Mifflin, was lost for the season with a knee injury sustained in the Beast of the East Tournament. Sherlock, wrestling in the 130-pound finals, tore his ACL in the December tournament.

The real thing

Normally, I am hesitant to coronate young wrestlers who get off to a fast start but there is no denying the talent that Cody Wiercioch possesses. The 152-pound freshman from Charleroi High School captured the hearts of wrestling fans when he won his weight class in the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament. Wiercioch is the first wrestler from Charleroi to win a title at Powerade in 40 years.
Winning the Chartiers-Houston Invitational was a good accomplishment for such a young wrestler but taking a Powerade title means Wiercioch is something special. What makes him so much fun to watch is his technique is nearly flawless, he never gets out of position, he has great balance and has incredible poise for a freshman.
After suffering through some lean seasons, wrestling fans in this area could use someone like Wiercioch to reignite interest in the sport. His presence in the Cougars lineup makes him a must-see attraction.
How far can he go?
Well, the state tournament is not out of the question.
A state champion?
I don't like putting that type of pressure on anyone but it will be fun to see if that's possible.
